Tumppi Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 I was amazed by Kaio's enormous strength in the bout against Tokitsuumi. He just kept tossing Tokitsuumi around. And I wonder why nobody is able to give Asashoryu a bout lasting longer than 2 seconds. (exception Kyokutenho)
Kashunowaka Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 Asashoryu gets Tokitsuumi on day 9. Normally, he would only have one bout left against maegashira (almost certainly Kotomitsuki). But today Musoyama was rolled off in wheel-chair, so it might be his heya-mate Kakizoe who will face the yokozuna instead.

Asashosakari Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 But why does Asashoryu face Tokitsuumi?? The 5 rikishi ranked right below Asashoryu are "reserved" as his opponents for Days 11-15...beyond those, Tokitsuumi is the highest-ranking one that Asashoryu hasn't faced yet, so he's up tomorrow. Kotomitsuki would be next in line after that, which is what leads to Kashunowaka's prediction that he'd be Shoryu's last Maegashira opponent, under normal circumstances (i.e. without Musoyama's injury messing up the bout scheduling plans). Perhaps this is more illustrative than words, though...
Tokimori Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 He will meet Kotomitsuki. If Musoyama is injured, he will also meet Kakizoe.
Kintamayama Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 11 rikishi at 2-6?? Isn't that statistically abnormal, or whatever?
Yoavoshimaru Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 I would choose "whatever" if those are the two options (Welcome...) That matrix linked above is interesting. It took me a couple of minutes to figure out how to interpret it, although I'm sure there are directions somewhere. Thanks for the link (Shaking head...)
Zenjimoto Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 Perhaps this is more illustrative than words, though... What is the Matrix? Now we know! (Welcome...) I have always found the Matrix very interesting, showing the spread of opponents for each rikishi. Gives you a pretty good idea of who each one has to face the remainder of the basho, too. An invaluable tool for anybody who ever tries to make a torikumi... Cheers Zenjimoto
Koriyama Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 And I wonder why nobody is able to give Asashoryu a bout lasting longer than 2 seconds. (exception Kyokutenho) It looks like that now, when Kotonowaka is getting older and there is less and less of Mr. One minute in Basho, the new time-star is born: Mr. Shinkansen (It takes only 2 seconds to get you from Ulan-Bator to "Yet Another Yokuzuna Win Area". Seriously, I think it
Naganoyama Posted January 19, 2004 Author Posted January 19, 2004 (edited) Luckily there is some rikishi that are not afraid of him, and Kotomitsuki is one of them. So, I really do hope, that Asa will have to fight Kotomitsuki. ;-) Although Asashoryu's record against Kotomitsuki is only 9-6, he won all 5 of their bouts in 2003. Perhaps Kotomitsuki is also losing his nerve against Asashoryu. :-D (And you have your wish - they are fighting tomorrow) Edited January 19, 2004 by Naganoyama
