I think 12 wins should be enough for promotion. Here's a query with non-promotions: 33 wins in 3 bashos, last one as Sekiwake.

There are two reasons for not promoting:

- Low score (<12 wins) in the third basho

- Maegashira rank in the first basho

Neither would apply for Baruto if he gets 12.

Baruto was Komusbi 4 months ago...

In the past we had 3 rikishis who were Komusubi with a DD and for the next basho were Sekiwake (with a 8-7 or 9-6). Two months later as a Sekiwake they win at least 12 times :

Kiyokuni was Ozeki two months later (31 wins in 3 bashos.. impossible today !!!)

Wajima stay a Sekiwake for 1 one more basho...

Akebono was Ozeki two months later

			 1 2 3 4 >
Rikishi Date Rank Record	Date Rank Record Date Rank Record Date	Rank Record
Kiyokuni 1969.01 K1w 10-5 1969.03 S1w 9-6 1969.05 S1w 12-3 J 1969.07 O1e 12-3 Y
Wajima 1972.01 K1e 10-5 J 1972.03 S1w 9-6 1972.05 S1w 12-3 Y 1972.07 S1e	8-7
Akebono 1992.01 K1w 13-2 J 1992.03 S1e 8-7 1992.05 S1w 13-2 Y 1992.07 O1e	0-0-15

Baruto seems to have the same Ozeki run as Akebono in 1992 : so Baruto needs the Yusho with a 13-2 or 14-1 record If he wants to be the next Ozeki in march !

Uhm, what you write seems more like sufficient condition, not necessary. It just hints yusho should be enough, but 13-2 could make it even without yusho, or 12-3 yusho... many possibilities, no certainty.

He finally did it! I must say at the time I worried about his knee though. I wasn't sure if he was grimacing in pain or excited about the win but later he seemed fine so hopefully it was not a problem.

That was a superb win - the throw seemed to take Hakuho completely by surprise and it must have taken great strength and timing to pull it off.

With 11 wins from M3 3 basho ago, Baruto is establishing himself as a rock-solid top-level competitor, and it seems now absolutely inevitable that he is going to make Ozeki. It's only a matter of (likely just a little) time, assuming he stays healthy. Good for him! We need more rikishi who can strike even a little fear into the hearts of the Yokozunas and make these basho more interesting for us as fans.

If Kaio and Kotomitsuki depart this year, wouldn't that be an embarrassing situation for the Japanese, with both Yokozuna and all 3 Ozeki being foreign? Add to that Kakuryu's likely establishment as a frequent Sekiwake, and dang!

Sumo needs to increase its popularity => Baruto is popular => Baruto as ozeki => increased popularity

He does suit the whole "kawaii" thing much better than any other rikishi. And a hell of a lot better than that creepy cartoon mascot.

Sumo needs to increase its popularity => Baruto is popular => Baruto as ozeki => increased popularity

To paraphrase--"Sumo needs to increase its popularity =>Japanese rikishis are popular =>any new Japanese rikishi as ozeki => much more popularity than from another gaijin ozeki"

Taking that reasoning a step farther--"a Japanese rikishi as yokozuna => GREAT popularity"

Baruto is human. Straight from the monsters mouth. (In a state of confusion...)

Is that what got the laughs in his interview?

I agree with that line of thoughts, but since there is no Japanese rikishi of that caliber this side of 2015, I think Baruto would be a good alternative to the "Mongolian hordes" sweeping the maukuuchi

...cannot fully agggreee with that either.

He is popular, yes, but Osh etc. are popular as well - for being kawaii (featured in the book 「カワイイ大相撲」kawaii Ozumou along with Osh, Hakuho, Homasho, and Futeno - all the "cuties", liked by the girls. (Having it here, looking at the profile fotos - I bet they told Bart to open his blue eyes widely...)). But this kind popularity doesn't help much (in the stats, it falls and falls for many reasons) , as it (kawaii popularity) is some great deal away from what Sumo wants to be popular for.

The number one in the 1990s was Takanohana - cause he had it all - kanroku (the aura of somebody you feel like he is some God-like, super-respected person...difficult to describe...), he was the strongest - mentally and his body-strenght caught up over the years. Personified self-control...(in the ring), kinda inapproachable. And yes, he was also born into his role. (And yes, a very handsome one))

Bart looks like a little boy in a big body, compared to a Yokozuna like that. Hakuho tries hard, but still....

Sumo isn't made of kawaiisa (cuteness). Sumo changed a lot, as the Japanese youth, the Japanese society in general, but loosing that (yeah, exactly what Uchidate always fought for) ...I really don't think the popularity of Sumo could rise much. Sumo indeed needs a Japanese Yokozuna WHO CAN be like Takanohana.

We had the battle of the Hawaiians versus Taka - and Taka winning pretty often --> watching this was amazing and made people proud I think- The Japanese prince of Sumo won. If there can be a competition like that again - a Japanese Yokozuna versus strong (and cute if you want to) Bart and Hakuho- this would increase the popularity of Sumo.

No idea if it matters where a gaijin comes from - but as a European Bart might be more popular as Asian gaijin...

And the idols of youngsters who might want to join as Shindeshi are not the cute ones - it's strong rikishi. I had many "Takanohana" or "Musoyama" answers, asking rikishi about their idols.

That's one Yokozuna and 4 ozeki (one fusen).

You're making the same mistake the English announcer made like 4 times. Chiyo was no longer an Ozeki. (Consoling...)

I admit I didn't think my remark through this far, and I'm certainly not thinking of Baruto as yokozuna material. I was only thinking that a cute foreigner might be more acceptable (or less unacceptable) than a scary or offensive foreigner.

Although -- surely there are some in the Kyokai who realize that foreigner-laden top ranks are inevitable if you're going to allow a significant number of them to compete. No one who thinks his chances of making sekitori are only "so-so" is going to relocate to Japan, learn the language, and put up with the joys of deshi-hood for as long as it takes, and no oyakata in his right mind is going to go to the trouble of recruiting foreigners for only mediocre talents.

Yep. Kept doing it all week when talking to people too. Just couldn't get used to the idea. At least it was over quickly.

Even the NHK announcer made that mistake--with former Taikai sitting right next to him.

Well, Chiyotaikai is now [moto] ozeki for eternity.
