Yokozunae preparations- Hatsu 2010

Both Yokozuna started training this morning. Asashouryuu lent his chest to the local Sandanme boys and did meticulous shiko. "'I'm feeling great. I'd like to make this a great year!", he said. He said he climbed a mountain in Mongolia to see the first sunrise of the year. "I went on an island where a statue of Genghis Khan can be found. It was a glorious sunrise!", he added.

Meanwhile, back at Miyagino, Hakuhou trained lightly. "I will be gambarizing every single basho. I guess my next target is Wajima's 14 yushos", he said. It is being said that he went to a shrine with his family to pray in the first sunrise.

Asashouryuu is somewhat in the dark side again, at least in some online papers. In yesterday's keiko, he played the role of "strict headmaster" and was giving the younguns of his heya a hard time. After lending his chest to the Sandanme guys for16 bouts and doing some serious shiko, he turned to the "educating". He threw them to the left and right and even showed some dangerous martial arts moves. At this point, Takasago Oyakata left, and he took over. While the keiko session was winding down and rikishi were doing some shikos, Asa went to the storage room and returned with a...bamboo cane, the sort that has been banned by the Kyokai after the unfortunate incidents. The reporter stresses the fact that he did NOT use it , but standing there menacingly cane in hand seems to have caused some fear over there. He made a line in the sand with the cane, while teaching the low rankers how to do proper shiko. Then, when they were doing suriashi, he put 25 kilo dumbbells on them to make it harder. Seeing them grimace he said: "No strength at all..".

Hakuhou went to Tokitsukaze beya for degeiko today and had 30 bouts with Toyonoshima and others. "I was out of breath at the end, but it was good keiko", said he of his first degeiko before Hatsu. the initial plan was to go to Kasugano, but as he neared the heya he was told Asashouryuu was there, so he went to Tokitsukaze. Asashouryuu himself had 16 bouts and was looking very sharp. Edit: 15-1 against Tochinoshin and Tochiouzan and others. "I'm not ready yet-insufficient keiko is obvious", he said.

While the keiko session was winding down and rikishi were doing some shikos, Asa went to the storage room and returned with a...bamboo cane, the sort that has been banned by the Kyokai after the unfortunate incidents.

Isenoumi Oyakata, head of the educational guidance department special committee, called Takasago oyakata on the phone and questioned him about the affair. "It's against the rules so I phoned the shisho to verify this. He will hopefully explain to Asashouryuu that this is prohibited", he explained. You know how it is. You want to practice your golf stroke while the young'uns are doing their thing, so you reach into the closet for your putter without really looking and you accidentally pull out a bamboo cane instead. Could happen to anyone.

Hakuhou went for degeiko at Kasugano and had 20 bouts with Tochinoshin and others and was in a jovial mood. Ex-Kitanofuji who was there gave him the metaphorical seal of approval. "I have no balance.. Kakuryuu moves well, so..", he muttered. He said his knee was OK, but his old elbow injury was obvious as he seemed to be careful with it.
