Kintamayama Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Asashouryuu left for South Korea on the third and the rumors were that he would continue to Mongolia till the Aki Jungyo starts on the 18th. But he came back to Japan yesterday. When asked if he still plans to go to Mongolia, his people said they don't know.
Jonosuke Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 He is back in Japan now but still no show at training dohyo at Takasago or any other heya. He will go back to Mongolia on Oct 14 and schedule to be back on 17th, just in time for the jungyo. When you can win a yusho doing train or not, I imagine he would rather not....of course he has to be back by the start of jungyo as from now anyone absent from it without a good advance notice will be in deep trouble.
Kintamayama Posted October 30, 2009 Author Posted October 30, 2009 (edited) Asashouryuu entered the keikoba in Sukumo city, Kouchi at 9:54 am yesterday, markedly earlier than usual. What ensued was a series of bizarre incidents. When Kakuryuu came to greet him, he blew him a kiss. When some fans wanted to take his picture, he made the "V" sign and frolicked around. Without doing even one shiko, he suddenly muttered "Ah's a goin' back!!", and returned to the shitakubeya. In short, he appeared for three minutes. The Oyakatas and others who were present were dumbfounded. This is the first time this jungyo that he did not enter the keikoba. He had been seen drinking heavily the night before in town, and was looking hung over. He had been visiting his alma mater of Meitoku high the day before, and had promised to help resurrect the once powerful sumo team, which has totally deteriorated recently. He couldn't even train properly, as the current sumo club members came to watch at his invitation.. As for the jungyo office with their new strict rules- Oshima Oyakata- "I don't know anything", as if someone handed him a hot potato. The reporter is calling the new regulations a farce that already has no "teeth" behind it. Edited October 30, 2009 by Kintamayama
Otokonoyama Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 A hung-over Asashoryu appeared for only three minutes on the keikoba and then vanished to the shitakubeya.
Kintamayama Posted October 31, 2009 Author Posted October 31, 2009 Takamisakari: "I swear it's sake.." Asa: "It better be, else I'll knock your block off.."
Kintamayama Posted November 4, 2009 Author Posted November 4, 2009 Asashouryuu went for degeiko at Kasugano beya today, having 16 bouts against Tochiouzan, Tochinoshin and others and winning 12. Although he was quickly out of breath, he was attacking with his head and was quite adequate. "It wasn't bad for the first day of training", he explained. He wasn't in great form during the jungyo, and today his tachiai was high and he lost a few. "My balance is a bit off.. I'll be fixing that. Practice makes perfect.", he sort of said. Asa, tsukebito, taping and all that: Picking on a poor Juryo guy:
Otokonoyama Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 Picking on a poor Juryo guy: Tochinonada's really slumping these days...three makekoshi, a couple 8-7s, and another three straight losing records...
kaiguma Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 Picking on a poor Juryo guy: Tochinonada's really slumping these days...three makekoshi, a couple 8-7s, and another three straight losing records... Asashoryu knows as well as anyone... "And when you're in a Slump, you're not in for much fun. Un-slumping yourself is not easily done."
Kintamayama Posted November 5, 2009 Author Posted November 5, 2009 Asashouryuu asked Takasago Oyakata to be excused today from keiko so he can fly to Okinawa with his "mentor" the Dalai Lama. Takasago agreed. "It's a religious belief thing so I allowed it. It would have been better if he had gone after doing keiko in the morning, but... I hope his seeing the Dalai Lama will help him concentrate on what lies ahead", he explained. Asa flew out of Fukuoka airport in the morning and returned in the afternoon. "It's none of your business!", he said to the awaiting press upon his return, when asked how the meeting went.
Kintamayama Posted November 6, 2009 Author Posted November 6, 2009 Asashouryuu is back in training and visited Dewanoumi today, where he met the likes of Tochiouzan and Tochinonada, going 19-2. He was talking about baseball, congratulating the Giants on their local Japan Series championship and Matsui of the Yankees for being chosen as the WS MVP, after returning from some serious injuries. "Welcome back!", he said in English.
Kintamayama Posted November 7, 2009 Author Posted November 7, 2009 Degeiko today at Kasugano- 13-1 against TT (Tochiouzan and Tochinoshin) and others."I am steadily maintaining my body and doing my best to gambarize", he ad-libbed.
Kaiomitsuki Posted November 7, 2009 Posted November 7, 2009 Is this child still alive (In a state of confusion...) ?
Treblemaker Posted November 7, 2009 Posted November 7, 2009 Is this child still alive (In a state of confusion...) ? Man, that's just scary!! Unless it's a new sport at the Olympics, I've never seen anyone do that. Talk about throwing someone out of the ring... Being launched by the same guy who regularly picks up 400+ lb mawashi-ed meatballs on a regular basis, this could be the trip of a lifetime for the kid. I just hope he landed on something soft. (Was YMY or Miyabiyama there?)

(Was YMY or Miyabiyama there?) The part that was editted out is the other rikishi waiting to catch the kid. It is a standard part of the kids sumo routine during jungyo. I think it is very unusual for a yokozuna to participate in it.
Kintamayama Posted November 9, 2009 Author Posted November 9, 2009 (edited) Asashouryuu went to Dewanoumi for degeiko this morning. He opted for guys like Futenou and Tochinonada, participating in 17 bouts and not losing any. Good deashi leading to migiyotsu, in turn leading to flamboyant moves like Uchimuso and uwatehineri were seen. It was obvious he was attacking mostly from the left though, and according to him his neck and right arm are not one hundred percent. "I can't use my right so I'm concentrating on my left. Somehow I feel my arm is very heavy, and that feeling seems to be coming from my neck..", he explained. Edited November 9, 2009 by Kintamayama
Kintamayama Posted November 10, 2009 Author Posted November 10, 2009 Asashouryuu did no keiko today. Last night he was partying at the Takasago beya encouragement party. "I'm a bit feverish and my throat feels funny.. I'll be training tomorrow!", he explained.
Kintamayama Posted November 11, 2009 Author Posted November 11, 2009 Asashouryuu resumed training today and went to Kasugano for degeiko, winning 15 of 17 matches. He has been showing cold-like symptoms for a few days. "My throat hurts.. Could be signs of a cold..", he explained. But as soon as he entered the ring, things changed. He wouldn't let Tochiouzan or Tochinoshin get up close and overwhelmed them, attacking strongly from a low position and generally looking fit.
Bataa Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Asashouryuu did no keiko today. Last night he was partying at the Takasago beya encouragement party. Also, I meet him for a cup of coffee every now and then and we talk about baseball. No, that's a lie...
Asashosakari Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Also, I meet him for a cup of coffee every now and then and we talk about baseball. No, that's a lie... Right, you're actually chatting about soccer...
Asojima Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 He has been showing cold-like symptoms for a few days. "My throat hurts.. Could be signs of a cold..", he explained. Research topic: How many years has it been since Asa did not "have a cold" during the week preceding his start of a basho? ;-)
Washuyama Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Research topic: How many years has it been since Asa did not "have a cold" during the week preceding his start of a basho? ;-) Approximately the same number of times he's said " I will not go to Mongolia" in between bashos and promptly catches the next flight to UB.
