Fay Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 KK for Tokusegawa!!! (First prize...) I'm really glad he could achieve KK in Juryo. I nearly lost my hope for him due to his injury and some quite stupid mistakes in the last few years. Not his best bout today but he made it and I look forward to another Juryo basho - at least.
Sokkenaiyama Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 This doesn't really belong here, but I just have to mention it. What happened to Kakuryu? (First prize...)

Sokkenaiyama Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Another 3 beers to one on that? (First prize...)
Fay Posted July 26, 2009 Author Posted July 26, 2009 Another 3 beers to one on that? (First prize...) anytime, but don't we already have a bet for this?
Asashosakari Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Was I the only one who thought that Fukao lost the first first-round bout? And...can't argue with the results, I guess, but if that ketteisen was an accurate representation of his skills, his sumo looks to me like it has a ton of holes that are bound to be judiciously exploited by higher-quality opponents. We'll see, as that one guy says..

My fuzzy view agreed with the torinaoshi decision. I have to agree that based on his history and his record, I expected a lot more out of Fukao than I saw. Edit: Tamao will get eaten alive in high Makushita. Edited July 26, 2009 by Asojima

Forget about that.. What kind of a weird tachiai does he have? And the coughs right before tachi-ai-the crowd was laughing hard by the time the third bout rolled around. He looks a bit.. well.. crazy. Edit: I just saw his yusho interview (BTW, Fukao won the 8 man Makushita playoff, which wasn't mentioned here) and he seems like a normal guy and even gave some other answers than the normal "ganbarimasssss", but still, eyes were rolling strangely. And it's not "we'll see', it's 'WE Shall See", which is something totally different. Edited July 26, 2009 by Kintamayama
Asojima Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Tokitenku looked like he was in a hurry to just go home. Takekaze got a 7-7 gift.
Barang Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Baruto should be Sekiwake west in next Banzuke. (Holiday feeling...) It is time to start next Ozeki run
ilovesumo Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Glad Kaiho won but could kick Hoshihikari's butt........falling back to Makushita...no wonder... (Holiday feeling...)

And it's not "we'll see', it's 'WE Shall See", which is something totally different. Could it be an attempt at laying the foundations for a Takamisakari-like act? Especially the one-foot-in-front tachiai (and not always the same foot!) seemed like it's calculated to get a reaction rather than actually produce an advantageous position. And..."we shall see seashells on the seashore", now that would be something totally different.
Chisaiyama Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 (edited) Baruto should be Sekiwake west in next Banzuke. (I am not worthy...) It is time to start next Ozeki run I was thinking he would be a Komusubi next time although he did beat Kotoshogiku today.... (Showing respect...) FWIW, I believe you're right. 14-1 or 13-2 from a M3 might trump 8-7 from Komosubi but I can't see an 11-4 from a M3 leap frogging an 8-7 Komosubi to Sekiwake. Although I have to agree with the earlier poster he probably should be sekiwake west I just don't think he will be. With his hard core fan not being there he thought he could take a time out. Din't worry, the Ozeki run will start at Aki Basho again. I'm sorry but I believe an Ozeki run must start from Sanyaku not Maegashira so it would have to wait until Kyushu at least (if he is truly successful from the M2 or M3 spot he finds himself in in Aki, that is). shimodahito Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 good day all, 3 late comments. - good to see kasugao get 8 wins in makuuchi again. - good comeback from sakaizawa in juryo after sitting out 6 days. - no one finished with a 7-8 record in makuuchi!!! how rare is this? -shimodahito
salle Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 (edited) - no one finished with a 7-8 record in makuuchi!!! how rare is this? Great catch! According to Sumo Reference db it's first time since Aki 1987! Almost full 22 years! It was happening quite often in first half of 20th century. 1-2 times per year until 1949. The last 10 occasions are: 1948.05 1948.10 1949.01 1967.11 1977.07 1978.01 1979.09 1981.03 1987.09 2009.07 The maximum with 11 rikishi at 7-8 happened twice: Haru 1950 and Aki 2005. Asashosakari Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 It was happening quite often in first half of 20th century. 1-2 times per year until 1949. Well, mostly because they fought fewer than 15 bouts in those days (1939-1944 excepted)...it's difficult to go 7-8 in 11 bouts. :-)
