Shomishuu Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 On anticipating 5/6 wins by Dejima this basho: Is it pretty much resolved that no ex-ozeki will ever repeat Daiju's "shame" of agreeing to fight in juryo? Regardless, I'd doubt that his oyakata (the Rijicho) would permit it anyway.
Jonosuke Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 Dejima has been out of ozeki rank for so long so I really think it really does not matter to him. If he feels he is physically capable of going on, I think he will. Last four days he has been looking rather pathetic. He has totally lost his power - he really can't push off his opponents anymore so he is getting into a yotsu mostly but his yotsu skill is pedestrian at best, pretty much low Juryo level, not even competitive against Kitazakura. The thing is this - is his current condition a result of some physical ailment? If so then he feels once he gets over it, he will think he can still compete but if not, like it's a gradual downward spiral then I am sure he will lose his will to continue rather abruptly if he drops to Juryo. But then as a former ozeki, he can stay with the Kyokai for a while so if he wants to quit, he can do so any time. Didn't he have a Kabu already though?
Shomishuu Posted July 16, 2009 Author Posted July 16, 2009 (edited) Dejima has been out of ozeki rank for so long so I really think it really does not matter to him. If he feels he is physically capable of going on, I think he will. If so, it'll be interesting to see what the reaction might be since there is only one precedent, and a pathetic one at that (0-3 at J1 followed by a fusen loss and intai). But then as a former ozeki, he can stay with the Kyokai for a while so if he wants to quit, he can do so any time. Didn't he have a Kabu already though? Looks like he's loaned Onaruto out to the former Buyuzan. Edited July 16, 2009 by Shomishuu
Washuyama Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 ...since there is only one precedent, and a pathetic one at that (0-3 at J1 followed by a fusen loss and intai). I remember that instance. Sumo World ran a large story discussing Daiju's demotion. I may be wrong, but I tend to agree that he would intai before going down to Juryo.
ilovesumo Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 I expect him to take over Musashigawa....so dropping down to Juryo...nah....
ilovesumo Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 (edited) I expect him to take over Musashigawa....so dropping down to Juryo...nah.... Isn't Fujishima taking over? When he said he'd like to found his own heya (maybe reactivate Fujishima beya??) when he was asked about his future - I took that for real, but who knows. Edit: He said that 2005 in Lausanne - long long ago Edited July 16, 2009 by ilovesumo
Chisaiyama Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 When you compare the careers of Fujishima oyakata (moto Musoyama) with Dejima in particular their performances as Ozeki it would seem that of those two Fujishima would be the better qualified to take over or found a heya. Of course there is also a certain former Yokozuna in the form of Furiwake oyakata who might be considered as a still better candidate for the Musashigawa title. I thought I read something around the time he took over the Furiwake myoseki about him considering Japanese citizenship though I could be wrong on that.
Chiyozakura Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Musashimaru has already taken Japanese citizenship as an active rikishi. Without it you cannot stay with the NSK as an Oyakata. I have got the impression that it is an open secret that Fujishima will take over as the next Musashigawa Oyakata in early 2013 when the current Rijicho reaches retirement age. The Fujishima name will probably be passed on to Miyabiyama who has a close relationship to Fujishima and used to be trained by his father. Dejima owns Onaruto and may want to set up his own heya. It is rare for a former Ozeki to stay an associated Oyakata until reaching 65. Currently only Otowayama is in that position, plus Tochiazuma who will take over Tamanoi Beya soon. Furiwake is in a dangerous position, but I get the feeling that he does not care too much about a future in the Kyokai anyway. It is just the easiest thing to do currently.
Shomishuu Posted July 18, 2009 Author Posted July 18, 2009 Listening to Murray and Clyde on the Day 7 NHK telecast, it sounds like they consider it a foregone conclusion that Dejima will retire as soon as it's evident that he can't stay in makuuchi. In fact they - I think it was Murray actually - said an "announcement" could come any day...not referring to kyujo, obviously.
ilovesumo Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 To be honest...when it comes to being a Sumo-sensei, Buyuuzan would be the best.... he might be a payed teacher under XYOyakata...
