Tikozan Posted July 21, 2009 Author Posted July 21, 2009 Now I fear it's time to say good bye for Dejima :-( 2 - 8 now and 5 days to go. I think only if he can win all this bouts he has a chance to stay in Makuuchi. With a lot of luck he could release it with 6 - 9. Than, we would see him in September. But in Juryo, no way. But in Germany we say : The hope dies last. When I began to watch Sumo on TV he was Ozeki. And now... the end is near...or not? Come on Dejima (Blowing up furiously...)
Sokkenaiyama Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 I'm not sure about this, but I thought I heard the NHK commentator say that Dejima hinted he'll go on doing sumo even after falling to Juryo.
Kintamayama Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 I'm not sure about this, but I thought I heard the NHK commentator say that Dejima hinted he'll go on doing sumo even after falling to Juryo. And online papers are speculating that he will definitely retire if he drops.
Sokkenaiyama Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 You have a saying, Mr. D, I believe it goes "we shall see".
Kintamayama Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 You have a saying, Mr. D, I believe it goes "we shall see". Indeed I do, but : His shisho Musashigawa Oyakata: "I don't want to make him continue. I'm pretty sure he feels the same way.." Dejima: "There are still some days left, so all I can do is gambarize!",
Sokkenaiyama Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 They're not saying much in those comments, unless there's something that doesn't make it past the language barrier, or "I don't want to make him continue" really means "I'm not going to allow him to continue in Juryo". Dejima's answer is standard. Could it be, though, that the commentator somehow got it wrong?

Dejima's answer is "I'm in deep shit!".

Torideyama Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 I just found this newsclip: NAGOYA, July 22 (AP) - (Kyodo)
Kintamayama Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 You have a saying, Mr. D, I believe it goes "we shall see". And we have seen.
Sokkenaiyama Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Serves me right for trusting the likes of Ross Mihara, eh? I bow to you, sir.
Kintamayama Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Serves me right for trusting the likes of Ross Mihara, eh? I bow to you, sir. It's not to me-I am far away. The papers I translate have a way of writing things that with time, I have learned to understand between the lines. The established sumo guys are extra careful not to print stuff they are not sure about. Same goes for Dejima's kabu-they say it's Oonaruto so it's gotta be Oonaruto.
kaiguma Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Could it be, though, that the commentator somehow got it wrong? Gee, you think? (Neener, neener...) Now who might that be? Serves me right for trusting the likes of Ross Mihara, eh? I bow to you, sir. Heh!?! Serve you right? Sure does! (Jumping in ecstasy...) [sorry to make you the butt of a joke Ross, if you read this] Well at least you didn't rely on info from Hiro Morita. In no fewer than two existential comments from I think day 11 he proclaimed that Homasho lost to Homasho and Shotenro defeated Shotenro. Or something like that.
Asashosakari Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 And by the same token, Tosanoumi's a bit of an odd choice for whom to predict <= 6 basho till career end, too. Maybe we should wait until he actually records his first-ever MK as a juryo rikishi before sounding the death knell there... Early contender in the 2009 Inverted Prescience Award. (Jumping in ecstasy...) It hasn't been a good basho for ol' Angel Ankles...

Or something like that. Not sure about the second one, but the first one was the other way around, where Homasho's opponent Tamanoshima got "a double-inside grip, drives and ousts Tamanoshima".
Tikozan Posted July 23, 2009 Author Posted July 23, 2009 Now it is a reality. :-( Bye bye Dejima and all the best for your future
HenryK Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Now it is a reality. :-(Bye bye Dejima and all the best for your future This is arguably all about cultural differences, but I fail to see why it would be a "shame" for Dejima to perform in Juryo, especially if he is injured. If so, he might well have pulled a Wakanosato at the next basho and returned to Makuuchi in full force.

Thank you. Your memory obviously better than mine. All I could remember was the ridiculousness of it, and twice in one day. But over the years he has kind of grown on me; when he makes mistakes I groan and smile. ;-) And sorry for the off topic.
