hendesu Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 Asashoryu commented yesterday on Harumafuji's Ozeki promotion party that he wishes that the new Ozeki will become a Yokozuna one day. Is that possible??? (In a state of confusion...) I don't think so...
Tony Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 First, he should capture his first yusho. But, who knows??
Bilu Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 As long as Asa and Hak are around - I don't see any chance (barring their injuries, etc). Actually, when Asa is OK Harumik chances against him are not too good. His record vs. Asashoryu (as Ama) is 2-13. He was lucky to have Asa out during his Ozeki run..

If not, it's not news, it's just noise.
sekihiryu Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 I concur with Bilu: He won't in the current circumstances.
Jejima Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 I think he can. He is currently the best prospect (IMO) in Makunouchi to make it to Yokozuna. Although we do have two very good Yokozunas at present (kudos to Asashoryu for coming back as strong as he did - I did not think he would), we all know that things can happen in sumo. Take one of them out of the equation (for whatever reason), and suddenly his chances look a lot better Before this year started, I thought he had a reasonable chance of making Yokozuna *this year* - but that was based on Asashoryu retiring after a poor basho in January (In a state of confusion...)...... Harumafuji had a poor basho as a shin-ozeki (which is not so uncommon). But in the two previous bashos's before that he had records (whilst at Sekiwake) of 12-3 JY and 13-2 DJY (loss in play-off). These records are not that far off what would be required for him to make Yokozuna from Ozeki. Asashoryu was absent at the time. If he were to go absent again (for health or other reasons) for a basho or two, there could be a window of opportunity for Harumafuji to cease upon. However, (upon seeing Asa's performance last basho) I am now downgrading my opinion of Harry from a reasonable chance of being promoted to Yokozuna this year, to slight chance. (For next year, it may be upgraded again.....)
Treblemaker Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 (edited) The package that Harry is at present, no and not anytime soon. Just watch Baruto's Crane lifting him clear out of the ring with what appeared to be no more effort than loading a bag of potatos. Unlike Asa, whose low centre of gravity, incredibly wide and unmovable stance, incredible upper body strength and killer mental approach are more than enough qualities to make him a very dangerous short man, Haruma has only speed and agility. At present, he doesn't have the bulk to seriously handle the big guys, his reach is average - in short (no pun intended), physically he's not yet Yokozuna material. Baruto, Hakuha, Kotooshu - all big men who (without really trying) can dominate smaller men on a more regular basis. Sure, there are upsets, but Yokozuna (and Ozeki for that matter) cannot survive on upsets. To put it into perspective, if Hakuho had Harry's build, would he be Yokozuna now? Harry Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Anyone know if he's quit smoking? That should gain him a good 15kg...

Agree, if one them out of the equation, I think he'd willing (they're all friends, arent they?) to yield a way to Ama if he's still in yusho race against his rivalry. There's no shame displaying a dodgy sumo against them when in matters. ;-)
