Doitsuyama Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 The two leading yokozuna were meeting the two underperforming ozeki today. While Asashoryu managed to beat Kotomitsuki for the 33rd time in the 40th match-up between them to send the ozeki to his first kadoban, Hakuho had more difficulties with Harumafuji right from the tachi-ai and lost to leave Asashoryu as the first sole makuuchi yusho leader this basho. Tochiozan easily beat Kakuryu to join Hakuho at one win behind with Tamanoshima another win back as he downed Asasekiryu. Kotooshu also is at two losses as he looked bad against Chiyotaikai, and sekiwake Baruto allowed Goeido to pull even with him at 7-3 as Goeido got into the much better position after the tachhi-ai. Komusubi Kisenosato beat a hard charging Takekaze to get even at 5-5 and become the leading candidate for the vacant sekiwake slot next basho. Masatsukasa is the first rikishi going make-koshi in the lower maegashira half and is close to demotion. Shotenro quickly pushed pursuer Hoshihikari out to secure kachi-koshi, stay in the sole juryo yusho lead and ensure a makuuchi debut next basho. Five of the other seven pursuers won to stay one behind so it's still a very close yusho race. The two J11 Asofuji and Kitazakura lost to stay in big demotion danger. They (along with J13w Tamaasuka at 4-6) need a 3-2 over the last five days to stay in juryo, with Yotsuguruma needing only two more wins thanks to beating Kasugao with yoritaoshi. Looks like it will be another basho with juryo promotions hard to earn. Washuyama Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 (edited) Asashoryu was holding his bad elbow after his bout with Mickey. It must've hurt pretty bad because he took his kensho with his right hand. His bout with Osh tomorrow ought to be one to watch. Edited January 20, 2009 by Washuyama
Musashoryu Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Asa looked like he agravated the elbow though so i wonder if that 1 bout buffer will do him any good?
Kotononami Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Today is officially the end of a 20 KK streak (since Nagoya 2005) for Kotomitsuki (Being ill...)
Mark Buckton Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 O2w Kaio (7-3) hatakikomi M2w Yoshikaze (3-7) When Yoshikaze looks pissed at the stunt an ozeki pulls........geez!
Jonosuke Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 It must've hurt pretty bad because he took his kensho with his right hand. I thought he was always picking up the kensho with his right hand.....
