Day 15 Kokkai

Erm, they met already (day 13) - maybe change?

And you think they will not have a second bout?

Hm!

Then Takamisakari please!

Thank you, Jejima!

Maybe we can give some thought to working up some special prizes for this game. Here are some initial suggestions:

1. Outstanding performance (shukun-sho) - the one who correctly picks the aite the most consecutive days. You'd have to have a minimum of three to win this prize.

2. Fighting spirit (kanto-sho) - the best record in the second week of the tournament, from Nakabi (Day 8) to Senshuraku (Day 15). You'd have to win at least 3 times over that period, and the yusho winner(s) wouldn't be eligible for this prize.

3. Technique (gino-sho) - the best moments in this game are when you have the correct pick while everyone else misses. We had 3 days this happened this tournamemt - Jejima with Kotooshu on Day 2, myself with Baruto on Day 3, and Oshirokita with Miyabiyama on Day 9. So this prize would be given to the one who is best at making correct picks when no one, or hardly anyone else does. A little point system would be used:

3 points if you're the only win to make the correct pick

2 points if you're one of two to make the correct pick

1 point if you're one of three to make the correct pick

You would need at least 3 points to claim this prize.

So are special prizes a good idea? Do these suggestions look good? Do others of you have other ideas? Maybe we can get this going next basho.

Day 15 - Takamisakari

Congrats to Yaochoyama for the yusho and sorry for missing another day. I'm in the yusho race in 3 dailies this basho, Tipspiel, SG and Bench, and I completely forgot to send the pick for this (I'd have gone with Goeido too, but, alas...).

I like the idea, and suggestions for OP and TP. I am not so keen on the idea for the FSP, as that it based on only half of a tournament - and I think prizes should be based on perfromances over two weeks. Is it possible to come up with another idea for this one?

There is a further problem..... Special Prizes are usually awarded to KK rikishi only. As the rules currently stand, it is very difficult / unusual to get a KK in this game. Therefore I presume that MK players would have to be eligible. But would we have a minimum record to be eligible (e.g. 5-10 or 6-9?) or could someone collect the TSp with a 1-14 record after picking YMY every day, and the torikumi makers going crazy (again) and making that matchup on the day it should logically have been Kotomitsuki ;-)

Part of my thinking for the Fighting Spirit prize was to give players who didn't start well something to shoot for as the basho winded down. But sure, we can try to come up with another idea.

I think given the nature of this game (isn't the average score around 5-10?), the KK rule should be waived. But I tried to set minimum requirements for each prize so you couldn't win one on the super-cheap.

Btw, even if Kotomitsuki hadn't gone kyujo, he wasn't going to face Kise until Day 15 ;-)

Here is the new torikumi!

As usual, all maezumo players are tacked on at the end.

I think that another KK in March could see Yaochoyama promoted to Ozeki in May!

Regarding some new ideas for a Fighting Spirit prize (see post#162), the only other idea I came up with was for the shortest losing streak (or literally, the one whose longest losing streak was the shortest). This would definitely be different from the prize of the longest winning streak prize. If we go with this, I think a losing streak of 5 or more days would automatically disqualify you from the prize.

Maybe someone has another idea?

This sounds a good solution (sorry for the delay in replying - I have been away on holiday).

Would someone be willing to be in charge of dishing out the special prizes?

So in summary, the special prizes would be as follows:

1. Outstanding performance (shukun-sho) - the one who correctly picks the aite the most consecutive days. You'd have to have a minimum of three to win this prize.

2. Fighting spirit (kanto-sho) - the one who limits their incorrect aite picks to the shortest number of consecutive days (literally the one whose longest losing streak is the shortest). Any losing streak of 5 or more days would disqualify you from this prize.

3. Technique (gino-sho) - the one who is best at making correct picks when no one, or hardly anyone else does. A point system would be used as follows and you would need at least 3 points to claim this prize:

All looks good to me :-)

If I understand your PM correctly, Yaochoyama will be able to look after the special prizes in March. Then we may need someone else to have a go in May.

By the way, who would have (or did indeed) win the special prizes this basho?

Yes, I can take care of the special prizes in March and July, but we'll need someone else to take it in May.

I had been keeping track of the number of correct picks each day, and out of curiousity I went back and figured the Gino-sho or Technique prize points (see post #169). Actually, the number of correct picks was rather interesting in itself - there were 3 or fewer correct picks on 10 of the 15 days:

Total whiffs (0 picks correct) - Chiyotaikai (Day 5), Kotoshoigku (D7), Takekaze (D10)

One pick correct - Kotooshu (D2), Baruto (D3), Miyabiyama (D9)

Two picks correct - Kaio (D6)

Three picks correct - Harumafuji (D4), Kokkai (D13), Goeido (D14)

So we had points awarded on 7 of the 15 days. If the technique prize had been in place, I would have won it with 5 points - 3 for Baruto and 1 each for Harumafuji and Goeido. Oshirokita would have been runner-up with 4 points (3 for Miyabiyama, 1 for Kokkai) along with Maguroyama (2 for Kaio along with 1 for Harumafuji and Kokkai). Jejima would have taken the early lead, being the only one to correctly pick Kotooshu on Day 2, but didn't pick up any additional points along the way.

I'm thinking Xiao Tan probably either won or tied for the Outstanding Performance prize (Shukun-sho). He seemed to come out of nowhere to suddenly be a yusho contender at the end. I checked on his picks after Day 8 and he had 3 correct picks in a row - Kyukutenho, Yoshikaze and Kokkai on Days 11-13. I know I didn't win 3 in a row. Did anyone else?

Ok, now all we need is a way to keep the entries secret (to limit the bandwagon effect).

I think some sort of basic automation might be required for that, as I would not want to have to trawl through emails or PMs on a daily basis, as I am (usually) pretty busy with Bench Sumo stuff most days of a basho.

Currently I have an easy system where I open two windows with the GKA's thread, and copy and paste in one, and go through the entries (fairly quickly) in the other.

The automation would (probably) just need to be a form for each day, and should be straight forward to make - if only I knew how.....

If someone could point me in the direction of a web-page giving easy instructions (and also telling me how to get it hosted), I would be quite interested in trying to make such a (basic) automation myself (Foot in mouth...)

Do your really want more than 10 people playing the game ;) That will ruin your banzuke positions!

Looks like it would be pretty easy to automate, the trick being the cutoff time for when the torikumi is released. You could even make it GTT contest ... Now that would be even more time consuming than doing the GTB ... If it were part of the sumogames universe, we could even have an entry form that would eliminate prior opponents.

How many weeks to the start of the basho?

P.S. If you really want to give it a go, I can give you space on the SumoGames server. It is possible to get just an entry form done if you have any of a number of web site creation packages. The ones I know best are Microsoft's FrontPage and later model Expression Web. But the really cool stuff like Golynohana and Doitsuyama (and now me with Juryo Game) use the free Visual Studio 2008 Web Developer Express and a SQL Server database.
