Fujisan Posted December 27, 2002 Posted December 27, 2002 What does everyone think of Asashyrus chances of winning the Hatsu basho,and will he make Yokozuna if he does? With Maru missing I think he has a very good chance,so far the only wrestler I have seen him really struggle with is Maru. Also what is Takanohanas present condition is he in for hatsu or not? This is my first post so excuse me if I sound green.
Zentoryu Posted December 27, 2002 Posted December 27, 2002 Well, if the story that just broke about his knee injury is true, and if it is bad, then he can probably kiss his Yokozuna hopes goodbye. It would take a big effort to win a Yusho with that kind of ailment. :-0 Oh! Newsflash!Asashoryu injured! Left knee is injured somehow. Also shoulder is evidently bothering him. Hashira Posted January 5, 2003 Posted January 5, 2003 hehe, fuji, no my name isn't meant to be rude, but i understand that some people see it that way. i was playing the sumo game for the old nes and it the kanji for fuku, no, yama were some of the only ones i could read and make a decent sumo-sounding name out of, so....

One pretty popular kanji with this reading is 福, meaning "good fortune", it can be seen often as decoration, even in the West. Hashira Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 looks like asasho should have the yusho now. he's looked strong the first three days and he's the only high ranked wrestler who's undefeated. and if taka retires, looks like it'll be 2 gaijin yokozuna for a while. don't know how good that is for the sport

At least not for the immediate future. Tochiazuma looks like he's either covering up an injury, or is suffering from a lack of confidence. Not sure if he was a Yokozuna candidate anyway. Kaio is always injured and is getting older. Musoyama...well no. Chiyotaikai got close, but now has to start all over again. He is probably the best bet, but he's starting to have injury problems himself. I don't know how good or bad it would be for the sport if Asashoryu became the second Gaijin Yokozuna. But one thing is certain, he is an exciting rikishi to watch. As long as he stays healthy, and with his fighting style that's iffy, nobody should be bored watching his matches. We shall see what the future holds.
Hashira Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 ya, i agree with that, asashoryu is definitely very exciting and would make an excellent yokozuna, especially because his style is such a contrast to musashimaru's. but i don't like the fact that there will be just the two foreign yokozunas, with, as you say, no japanese yokozuna candidates in sight for the near future
Yoavoshimaru Posted January 17, 2003 Posted January 17, 2003 Hi, More than a 1/3rd of the way through the basho, Asashoryu looks very good. He's beaten Dejima who's otherwise undefeated. When he meets Takanohana (if he's still in), I will be watching closely for a great match. Looking at age and Taka's injury, I'd pick Asashoryu in that one for a nearly pefect yusho.

As stated before, Asasho is looking very strong this basho, and is also entertaining to watch in my opinion :) As for the yokozuna part, I don't know... The future will tell.

Jesinofuji Posted January 19, 2003 Posted January 19, 2003 Its already day 8, and it really does look like Asashouryu will get the nod. I think he will certainly be a great Yokozuna. He brings excitement to the sport like no other rikishi has for a long time. (Blowing up at the other guy...) Its just his moves. As soon as the tachiai commences, is like he's moving in all directions at once. Whatever his opponent does, its like Asa can somehow turn it against him. You can never predict what he's coming in with, he uses too many different techniques. I love watching his matches in slow-motion, as it shows him making numerous moves that you can't even pick up in real time. The Yusho won't be enough to guarentee promotion unless he gets at least 13 wins though. I think he will and certainly hope he does.

Although Takanotsuru's resistance is not the best, he seems to do fine. No yusho for him yet, but you just wait! Perfect timing, if I might say, now when Toki is not doing very good.
Fujisan Posted January 24, 2003 Author Posted January 24, 2003 Well its all over bar the shoving now,Asa has moved two wins ahead of Deijima and Wakanosato with 3 days le ft,if he loses now it will be a tragedy. Its only a question wether they have anything against a second Gaijin Yokozuna.
