In honor of Takanohana's danpatsu-shiki, here are some pictures of him with fellow yokozuna: (as tsuyuharai at his brother's danpatsu-shiki, Akebono as tachimochi). Remember the time there were four yokozuna? With Musa. With Wakanohana. At Wakanohana's danpatsu-shiki.

All these pictures are scans from the May issue of Sumo Magazine (That was its name, wasn't it?). I'll scan a few more when time allows. I also now have the annual booklet (thank you to whomever who knows whom I'm talking about :-D ...) which includes B/W portraits of everyone in NSK so if you'd like to see the face of your favourite toriteki, contact me privately. These images are also available at a requested size. Just PM me. (Oh! First two images of the real rijicho, scanned from a collectible card sent to me by Kaikitsune-zeki. Thanks!) ------------- Then the ones from the magazine. These are all about Asashoryu. First sets of kesho-mawashi donated to him and his tachimochi and tsuyuharai. Then two images from his (first public?) dohyo-iri (at Meiji Jingu?). Sorry about the following page showing through. Finally two images from what I think is Tomioka Hachimangu. Tomioka Hachimangu, temple in Koto-ku in Tokyo in the Fukagawa area where a stone structure of 3.5 meters and 20 tons, on which shikona of yokozuna, shusshin-chi and the dates of promotion to yokozuna are carved, is located; yokozuna Jinmaku erected the original stone with the financial help of political elite and economic life in 1900; two more stone structures were erected in 1983 when the old one became full last yokozuna carved being Wakanohana II More to follow... My scanner is an el-cheapo and I can't really operate it properly. All of these are available at a requested size as well. Just PM me. First dohyo-iri of the three yokozuna and the sanyaku. Then the three yokozuna images I promised a decade ago. Taka with his tsukebito. Tochiazuma comes to shake hands with Taka. So do several others. Sorry about the size of this one but a smaller one would've been even more useless.

There's even one image in the magazine where he is indeed Taka's tachimochi but since I didn't recognize (Applauding...) the tsuyuharai (I'm a bit prosopagnotic, you see), I didn't scan it. Perhaps I should. BTW, notice Shuzan's jovial "howdy, howdy" stance. Amused me. :-S

Does anyone know why are they holding apples and nuts? This just occured to me: Chestnut-holder has tochi (chestnut tree) in his shikona. Are two apple-holders Aomori Apples? (Applauding...) Two old ladies who unable to stand the cold. :-S Minatofuji and Toki. And more ways to fend of the cold: Tomonohana and Mainoumi. Naruto-beya beauties: Taka and Waka for third millenium? Iwakiyama and Takekaze exchanging gossip on jungyo tour. Ta!

Do you know that many shin-juryo in their interview answer the question "What would you be in another life (ie. if you weren't a rikishi)?" with: Baseball player. So, here's two rikishi venting their unrealised dreams: Kotomitsuki... ...and Buyuuuuuuzan. And how about this secret agent? My name is Hayateumi... James Hayateumi. If you ever become Kaio's tsukebito, make sure you never anger him. (In love...) It's HOT here in Croatia (+37oC!), so here's a topical picture of Tomonohana cooling himself of during summer jungyo. Careful observes may notice Takanotsuru (I believe) in the background.

There was no one who looked like that there during my visit, at least. Ok, this comment kicked my lazy self into trying to translate the caption, whch says more or less: Kaio, demonstrating his superior strength by strangling his "douki" (rikishi who entered pro-sumo at the same time/basho) Subaru. Subaru is not only the type of car, it's also Japanese name for star group Pleiades. (Heart) And a very nice shikona, obviously. Subaru was from Takasago-beya, now retired.

All of these are again available at a requested size if needed. Just PM me. First two yokozuna of the yesteryears, viz. Onokuni & Akebono. Then two Hayateumi Naohito cards. I miss him dearly from makuuchi action. (In love...) Also two of Kyokutenho Masaru whose late blooming has been a joy to watch. Finally assortment of images: Aminishiki, Hokutoriki, Kaiho, Kotoryu, Kyokushuzan & Mitoizumi. As you can see from Mitoizumi's card, a proofreader vacancy hasn't been filled yet. (Being unsure...) Actually, there's this one horizontal card I might as well include. Chiyotaikai wins Takanohana by oshidashi on shonichi of Haru Basho 1998. I'll scan the smaller images from the backsides later today if I find the time.

As these are on average only about 20% of the card's surface, they are bound to become quite low quality scans. Sorry about that. (In love...) Kyokushuzan's backside image I skipped as it was a (badly) cropped full-body portrait of his instead of a nicely rectangular image. Onokuni or Shibatayama Oyakata as we know him now. Akebono helping another sekitori to pick up a lost coin. Then Hayateumi & Kyokutenho. Aminishiki, Hokutoriki, Kaiho and Chiyotaikai. Kotoryu displays a banzuke (and his shikona within) in front of nobori banners. Mitoizumi's victory parade back in July 1992, almost eleven years ago. His dobeya (stablemate) Konishiki had the honour of supporting the flag.
