Virtual GM

For all NBA fans:

After reading this topic: http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/index.php?...=609&hl=Virtual

I joined this interesting game for the second half of last season and had much fun.

We were only three players in our group (Furanohana, Moti and me) and I'm sure that there are more NBA fans on this Forum that would like to join us.

If you like NBA and like playing, this is the right game for you!

I know that Doitsuyama also plays this game. Do you play in a daily or weekly group and which group did you join?

I did nothing so far relating to VGM, but a (VGM-)friend of mine already re-established our group from last season, PPXP, and moved my team already in this group (he knows my password). Btw, he is from Lithuania, and you should know how Lithuania fared in the EC, so I'm happy at least for him. (First prize...)

If the PPXP group doesn't work out this season, maybe I'll come join the Sumo Fans group. (Happy goodbyes...)

Uh, oh, I just now see that there are three more countries compared to last year eligible for prizes, Taiwan, China and... Germany! Could be some extra incentive, ne? But it IS difficult to get into the top ten as there are probably over 30,000 players playing at full strength. And the prizes are not too important to salivate over, a total value of US$12,200 ain't that much considering the immense number of players. (Laughing...)

By the way, I never told how my VGM story of last year ended... I finished the Regular Season at 33rd and the Post Season (a new competition starting at Zero again) at 15th. In a sum of both I would have been 4th or so. But I REALLY must have been lucky as I was the ONLY player getting into the top 50 in both Regular and Post Season. But VGM is NOT pure luck. Unbelievably (really!!) the winner of the Regular Season 2002 also won the Regular Season last year. This repeat VGM victory really is quite something in my opinion. (First prize...) ;-)

Right now I'm also participating in a more traditional Rotisserie style Yahoo NBA fantasy league with the draft being tonight. Should be fun to see how this is working. (If you are curious about this style, just ask.) (Yellow cat...)

I totally would if I had the time (NBA is my first passion in sports), but I'm already the commissioner of a league for my office as well as running a team in it (kinda like Bud Selig, y'know?).

Depending on how you do it, I may be able to join up. Do you have more details (i.e. when the draft is, etc.)?

Do you really want to identify yourself with Bud Selig? ;-)

LOL not really...

Actually, I did sign up last night. However, does anyone know how to change your team name? I really don't feel like being "McAvoy Entry" all season...

There is a link "Change game settings" or similar in your clubhouse page. Changing the team name is quite easy, changing the owner's name requires one or two more clicks, but is also possible (and might not be in effect at once as opposed to the team name).

There isn't much room for the team name at all, but last season one leaderboard player managed to cram in the html for a marquee effect in the team name. Don't know how he did it but it had a nice very personal style on the leaderboard. After that the powers above switched html off in the team name...

Nice to have Doitsuyama now in our group, too B-)

Now we are 8 people (including my teammate from work who is a big NBA fan) and some of us are quite successfull.

For me the first week was quite good with the same score as Doitsuyama.

But the second week was a desaster with Kenyon Martin as dead loss (Clapping wildly...)

At least my teammate (luckymushroom) scored great and has won the 2nd week in our group :-D

Good that Kyushu basho is over, so I can concentrate more on this game... I just managed to survive this game and actually have been lucky last week. But the other members of the Sumo Fan group seem to have taken a hit while basho was on. (Help me...)

Actually, I'm still not happy with my weekly game, ranked only in the 1400s... (Annoyed...) My daily game is doing better improving in the last week, now 226th. (Blushing...)

Tsk, tsk, tsk... I don't like the sound of that, coming from the sole SB Yokozuna... (Applauding...)

Say what you want, but I consider myself a lot better here than in the Sumo games... and the competition is HARD. In the daily game certainly at least 30,000 players are playing competitively (more or less).

Update before the basho: The weekly VGM game is getting a bit boring as there aren't that many good choices, so everyone's lineup is similar to some degree and it is difficult to reach the top. But over the last days I had some improvement and am 367th, at 99.3 percentil of all weekly players.

The daily game is a lot more interesting. You have more influence on the outcome, the chosen teams are more different and the competition among daily players is way harder as there undoubtedly are loads of players playing competitively (I'm speaking in scales of tens of thousands, a bit more than the cozy Sumo games...) I'm eyeing the daily game leaderboard since some weeks, but just not getting there, now 71st, being 24 points short of 50th place. Well, standings can change quickly, and tonight should be very interesting as lineups are very diverse.

Next update after the basho. And members of the Sumo Fans group, don't slack during the basho (like during Kyushu...)

Hwo can I change my type of game to daily?

For me the weekly game isn't boring at all.

I think it's very challenging to find a team which should score well during a whole week.

Sometimes you are lucky to pick a hot player and sometimes a hot player cools down (why did I chose Paul Pierce last week?).

At least I still can hold my second rank in our group, but my colleague is getting closer and closer.

My dream still is to hold pace with Doitsuyama, but his lead grows from week to week.

My current rank (2773) is not bad for me, but I still want to reach the Top 1000.

You can't change it at all, which is good. The point aggregate wouldn't make any sense. But it is easy to create a second account and play a daily game with this account. Of course your total rank is meaningless then because you didn't play from the begin of the season, but you still could compete for being on the weekly leaderboard. I have managed to reach the leaderboard for week 8 which was the highest scoring week in VGM so far. Too bad I was just short of reaching 1,000 points in a week...

I'm pleased to see that the "Sumo fans" didn't slack off this basho. (Clapping wildly...) I'm sorry that I left the group but my "true" group called for me because it was filling up to the limit of 50 players. In this group competition is stiff and I am 8th now. Overall I had a very bad week followed by an acceptable one which puts me down compared to last report at 532th overall. (Clapping wildly...)

The daily game was totally different, here I had a very good first week of the basho (best in my group which means something...), moving from 83th to 33th overall. As usual a somewhat bad week followed after that (when will I have two very good weeks in a row?), 20th in my group. The fall from 33th to 42nd doesn't look that bad though so I'm still in the game. I guess a lot of leading players had similar problems as I had in the last week.

Now the NBA season has reached the All-Star-Game break and the VGM game's first part has reached a conclusion. The Sumo Fans seems to have slacked a bit since the last basho and the final first half percentages looks like they dropped somewhat. My weekly game was ok, I stayed in 8th place in my group and finished the first half at about 400th.

Total different story for my daily game! I indeed has two very good weeks after the basho which was good enough to teleport me from 42nd place overall to 9th overall. Finishing the first half in the top ten makes me feel fantastic!
