Takanobaka Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 Hopefully this will generate a bit more discussion than the Ozeki polls... Also, I left out people who have already been up to high juryo and makunouchi, hence no bubba ho-tep, and those below (and hence no Hoshikaze). I still probably forgot a couple of promising guys, but I'll explain my pick in a bit...
Takanobaka Posted September 26, 2003 Author Posted September 26, 2003 BTW, just to explain the earlier reference, I'm calling Takanotsuru Bubba Ho-Tep for the time being. For those who don't know, Bubba Ho-Tep is a new cult movie in which a 60 year old Elvis battles mummies; however, Bruce Campbell in Elvis makeup strangely resembles Takanotsuru.... First poll I'd made, so I didn't realize about the apostrophe glitch. Sorry about that.
Manekineko Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 I see so far Sadogatake-fans have voted. (Holiday feeling...)
Yoavoshimaru Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 I voted the last choice (don't follow...) although it's wording is more extreme than what I do in reality. I like the toriteki, follow them slightly, not much. However, I think there are many promising talents who don't pan out ("when X is mentioned it is commonly prepended by future ozeki or future yokozuna" etc.), as well as rikishi not perceived to be great who just slug it out and succeed in advancing into the paid ranks. So it's a crapshoot. And there are so many of them. I'm slightly more interested in foreigners, as they are fewer and thus easier to follow. Not being able to watch toriteki matches, even delayed after the basho, also hurts my interest.
Kaikitsune Makoto Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 KKtsugi!! I believe in this guy. The first time I saw him I thought "This guy has all the tools!". His legs look like made for ozumo and upper body isn't bad at all either. Also he is only 19. 3-4 in Aki but soon...soon...soon... Who is Wakainami??? (Holiday feeling...) :-/
Asashosakari Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 Who is Wakainami??? (Holiday feeling...) :-/ Current Makushita yusho winner. There was an article on him on the SML recently, if I'm not mistaken. (About his relation to moto-Komusubi Wakanami, or some-such.) Anyway, I voted for Ama, mainly because I've heard more about him than about Kotokeyboardbreakingshikona. :-)
Yubiquitoyama Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 I miss guys like Hagiwara and Toyonoshima in this poll, both of which I have some faith in. Anyway, I voted Ama because I think him being so succesful at his age and limited weight (and extreme fighting spirit) can be carried on with increasing weight higher up in the ranks. But we'll see (Holiday feeling...)
Kotoseiya Yuichi Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 Other is always a guy to be reckoned with. Who else could I vote? Never seen any of these guys and what if I had?
Kashunowaka Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 Seems I am not the only poll maker who gets backslashes added to his polls. (You are going off-topic...)
Jesinofuji Posted September 27, 2003 Posted September 27, 2003 I voted for Tokitenkuu cause when his sumo is on he can be simply amazeing. He's still got a ways to go, but he's a sure Sanyaku.
tominishiki Posted September 27, 2003 Posted September 27, 2003 i voted ama because he go to be the next amanishiki ;-) go ama the little rikishi (You are going off-topic...)
Zenjimoto Posted September 27, 2003 Posted September 27, 2003 I think we are lucky that currently there seem to be many interesting up-and-comers in Makushita. Really fascinating stuff coming our way, I think, the next year or so. Generally I think the foreigners you mentioned look most promising, but hopefully there will be several exciting natives as well... Cheers Z.
Takanobaka Posted September 27, 2003 Author Posted September 27, 2003 Just to reveal my own choice, I went with Kotooshu. As pat Riley once said "you can't teach size" and this guy will be an absolute behoemoth when he's done filling out. Even without having put on the weight yet, he's been doing extremely well, especially considering that he's been doing sumo for a muchshorter time period than many of the others. While some others are showing better technical sumo right now, I think he'll be learning as quickly as he'll be growing. Like I've said before, he reminds me some of a young Akebono, and one can hope that he too will have that kind of success.
Fujisan Posted September 28, 2003 Posted September 28, 2003 I voted Roho cause I heard positive things about him but to be honest they are just names to me- Its not that Im not interested its just I have never had chance to see any of them in action.
Exil Posted September 29, 2003 Posted September 29, 2003 There isn't an option for 'I don't know anything of makushita so I shouldn't be taking part in this poll'. (Riding an ATV...) Making polls is hard. (Releasing bad air...)
Kashunowaka Posted September 29, 2003 Posted September 29, 2003 There isn't an option for 'I don't know anything of makushita so I shouldn't be taking part in this poll'. (Riding an ATV...) Yes, that's the last poll choice. Making polls is hard. (Releasing bad air...) Indeed. B-)
