Doitsuyama Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 The torikumi makers opened up the possibility of a makushita yusho kettei-sen by avoiding a direct yusho decider between Tamaasuka and Sadanishiki. First Sadanishiki lost to Haikai from sandanme giving hope to Shironoryu, Takekabuto, Daitensho, Towanoyama and Matsutani (as well as possibly Aran) to take part in a big kettei-sen as they reached a 6-1 with wins today. Tamaasuka put a rest to such thoughts as he pushed Aran out with oshidashi in the last makushita bout, winning the yusho outright and becoming the third rikishi with excellent juryo promotion chances. Lead makushita Tosayutaka put a damper to his own chances, finishing 4-3 with a loss in juryo and possibly only shifting from west to east if there are only two demotion candidates in juryo. That's a real possibility actually since no juryo rikishi is sure of demotion yet and only Sakaizawa needs two wins to be safe. Daiyubu, Sagatsukasa, Wakakoyu and Asofuji should stay in juryo with only one more win, the rest is safe already, among them Kirinowaka thanks to his win against Tosayutaka. Wakatenro moves up into the juryo promotion zone with a 5-2 while several talents secured kachi-koshi with Sadanofuji, Kazafuzan, Fujimoto, Terashita and 18 years old shin-makushita Takayasu. 38 years old Kimenryu also finished 4-3, sending Tetsuhikari back to sandanme. Masunoyama finally got his first win in makushita, leaving Kenju winless. Ogata won against Mizakura, so there will be a kettei-sen for the sandanme yusho on senshuraku between Ogata and Hakiai. The light Czech Takanoyama lost his final bout against Shironoryu in makushita, with the rare sotokomata kimarite. There will be a jonidan yusho kettei-sen as well, between Fukao and Homarefuji. Both had there hatsu-dohyo in the Hatsu basho this year, and Fukao beat Homarefuji for the jonokuchi yusho last basho, so it will be interesting to see if Homarefuji can beat heavy Fukao this time. The jonokuchi torikumi was business as usual as the sole undefeated rikishi, Yashiki, didn't get a stronger 6-1 opponent, but in typical lame fashion one of the higher ranked, but weaker rikishi. Yashiki beat lower jonidan regular Shobimaru with tsukidashi to remain undefeated and take the jonokuchi yusho. Kamei won against Isanokuni, finishing a strong 6-1 while Inoue beat a weaker jonidan opponent for the same 6-1 score. Suzuki and Hoonami are the other two jonokuchi rikishi at 6-1. Harry Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Go Yashiki! Brought up to Jonidan against Shobimaru 5-1 (now 5-2) and still 7-0 with the win! That should be the jonokuchi yusho.

Harry Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Sorry, I will take a little more time to read the remarks before jumping right into the tables next time. Thanks again for posting this info throughout the basho.
Kotoseiya Yuichi Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Eighteen Sadogatake toriteki and none had a bout on day 13. (Sign of approval...)
ryafuji Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Regarding Tamaasuka's promotion chances, I thought there was a regulation that anyone who scores 7-0 from Makushita 15 or above gets automatic promotion to juryo?
Kaikitsune Makoto Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Aran is basically pulling in EVERY bout. He is totally chronic in that. I find that quite peculiar and much more so since he does so much keiko and is strong, solid and all. As if it is so badly embedded in his spinal cord that he just has to do that. He is good at that yes but still his sumo is very unpleasant while effective to a degree. Hope he brings more solid sumo to juryo or that he will be totally destroyed there to tiny Ossetian granules. Could someone really tell him to stop screwing around there and start doing sumo that he can be proud of and results come then too? His sumo is more annoying that Goeido's total self-destruction sumo in makuuchi. Weird. Where the hell is the Ossetian pride, the "manly pimples are good for rough men"-attitude, the desire to win by squeezing the air out of foes and do good sound sumo? I whistle to Aran and not the way some women do, I want to see more manly sumo from him. Shame on him. Lets see if there is a real rikishi there or is he just another puller? Ossetian Yokozuna, use your authority and make Aran do good sumo and not cut corners and do unappealing sumo. Come on...
higginbotham Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Regarding Tamaasuka's promotion chances, I thought there was a regulation that anyone who scores 7-0 from Makushita 15 or above gets automatic promotion to juryo? Yes, and there is. Back in the 70`s they decided every Makushita 15 and above would get immediate promotion after zensho-yusho. The first victim to this rule was Shimoda a couple of years ago, but it was his first basho ever in ozumo. Ironically, he has not reached Juryo thus far.
Jonosuke Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 Hope he brings more solid sumo to juryo or that he will be totally destroyed there to tiny Ossetian granules. Personally I think he is a Hokutoriki type. Quite strong upper body. If he has that pulling in his genetic makeup and if it's the kind that won't mutate, he can just aspire to be the next Hokutoriki. He may not get to be a Sanyaku but sometimes Makuuchi is enough if one does long enough.
Doitsuyama Posted May 24, 2008 Author Posted May 24, 2008 Regarding Tamaasuka's promotion chances, I thought there was a regulation that anyone who scores 7-0 from Makushita 15 or above gets automatic promotion to juryo? I'd say it's as automatic as a 4-3 at Ms1 or a 5-2 at Ms2, meaning that you still can get bad banzuke luck if there are too many rikishi with 5-2 from Ms1 or 6-1 from Ms2 and not enough demotions from juryo. Just ask Shimoda. But I think Tamaasuka will get the promotion as he isn't Ms15 but Ms12 and the other candidates can stay more easily in makushita, especially Tosayutaka who can be shifted from Ms1w to Ms1e - this happens often enough.
