Doitsuyama Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 (edited) The two lead makushita faced the new challengers at Ms2 today with Aran and Yamamotoyama prevailing to become quick promotion favorites. Lots of rikishi advanced to 2-0 today with Ri, Matsutani, Shiratsuka, the slender Russian Amuru, Shoryu as well as veteran Tochitenko and Tongan Minaminoshima (against Brazilian Kaisei) among them. Young Masunoyama won the sandanme yusho last basho, but mid makushita might still be too strong for him as he is down to 0-2. Czech Takanoyama also is 2-0 and probably back in makushita next basho. Hakiai has a much longer absence from makushita with serious knee injury, and he also is 2-0. Hungarian Masutoo is 1-1 with a win over Ota. In lower sandanme tall Oazuma, Ogata and Kinryuzan are notable at 2-0. A lot of promising shin-deshi are advancing to 2-0, the highest ranked are Kotoenomoto and the Sakigawa-beya duo of Isanokuni and heavy Isamizuki. messi19 Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Well, as for Masunoyama - his loss today came after he was at the receiving end of a henka by Mizuguchi, but mid-makushita is indeed a big step up on everything else he's had to deal with so far..I wonder how he compares in keiko to Takunishiki who seems to be back on track and looking good for KK. Right now Takunishiki is probably the strongest Chiganoura rikishi, but Masunoyama will get there in time. (I am not worthy...)
Azumashida Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Ms2w Aran (2-0) yoritaoshi Ms1w Tosayutaka (1-1)Ms2e Yamamotoyama (1-1) kotenage Ms1e Hokutokuni (0-2) Kimarite on these two not what one would expect from these guys perhaps? Aran still tried to win backwards, but it didn't quite work so after running away from Tosayutaka for half the bout he eventually had to settle for the undignified way (from an Ossetian viewpoint, or at least so it would seem from the recent trend in the Boradzov family): forward.
kaiguma Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 (edited) Young Masunoyama won the sandanme yusho last basho, but mid makushita might still be too strong for him as he is down to 0-2. Just my observation, but the loss today was to the cheapest of henkas, so cheap and easy-looking it inspired one in the next bout, kind of like speeding on the highway (I am not worthy...) So I hesitate to agree that the 0-2 record can really measure his aptitude for makushita. However, as he gets older and wiser he will probably be less likely to fall for it next time... Ms2w Aran (2-0) yoritaoshi Ms1w Tosayutaka (1-1)Ms2e Yamamotoyama (1-1) kotenage Ms1e Hokutokuni (0-2) Kimarite on these two not what one would expect from these guys perhaps? Well there was quite a bit of "lateral movement" leading to a sudden forward charge at the edge. Basically he saw the opportunity and went for it which is good, but up to the that point I'd say Tosayutaka had the bout and blew it. He showed far better sumo IMHO. YMY was fantastic, and not at all like a meatloaf today. More like high-velocity ground beef spewing forth from a grinder. He was all over Hokutokuni's arm in a flash and SPLAT! If he can use this kind of speed in every bout he can become an impressive force in Makuuchi. Imagine Miyabiyama crossed with Kaio. :-) Yikes. Edited May 13, 2008 by kaiguma
messi19 Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Kaiguma, from the little I have my seen of my adoptee he *is* prone to henka because he goes all out at the tachi-ai. No back-pedalling, but forward moving sumo no matter what. It makes it very hard to avoid falling for a henka - even in makuuchi a rikishi like Chiyotaikai has virtually no ability to adapt to his opponent side-stepping. Even Yokozuna Hakuho fell for one last basho so I hope Masunoyama's opponents will take him straight on all the time even knowing that they may get blasted out of the ring in less than two seconds. (Neener, neener...)

(Neener, neener...) I've seen even the most "raging bull" type of tachi-ai adapt to a henka, though most of these rikishi can't do so consistently. Dejima seems to have a good handle on it. It's almost as if a 6th sense warns the charging rikishi that something is up and the body just instinctively angles in the direction of the henka. Usually embarrassing results for the guilty party... hopefully we can see some of that from time to time as Masunoyama grows into his big shoes. :-)
