For those in Japan you can catch a couple of retired sekitori on TV tonight (Sunday May 4).

On TV Asahi from 18:56 to 20:54, Masaru Hanada will show up on Daitan MAP. Tonight's feature is 50 jobs in rank based on salary.

Or over at the good old ever misery low budget TV Tokyo you can catch Tochiazuma oyakata heading to country in search of red squash in Kagawa Prefecture.

Sounds like a perfect evening to watch some TV.

But if you are really into getting up early in the holiday morning, on Monday morning (May 5) from 6:30 to 6:53, you can check up on that old curmudgeon commentator of NHK Ozumo broadcast, Kitanofuji being interviewed on NHK Sogo. He will be talking about his home town in Hokkaido and will look back on his sumo life culminating in becoming a yokozuna as well as his hope for Ozumo.

Of course if you really want to see an active yokozuna on TV, on Saturday May 10 from 1:50 to 2:20, yokozuna Hakuho will be the guest of Akashiya Sanma's Sanma No Manma on Fuji TV. But who stays up this late the day before the basho opens.

Actually it's early Saturday morning or late Friday night.

If you go to this site mighty quick, you can even see our Hakuho with Sanma.

But for you, Mr. Hashira, you can sojourn over to Heisei and rent the video there about a month from now.

I could, but alas, I have changed locations to Nagano, and I can enjoy the priviledge of staying up late to see the yokozuna with one of my favourite comedians

This Monday from 18:55, Hakuho and his partner (some Japanese World boxing champion) will appear on Tokyo Friend Park 2. See Hakuho playing air hockey, jumping on a wall while wearing a velcro suit, answering probing questions while running on a treadmill, and much, much more!

do we know if this was taped before the basho, or after?

i wonder if it's wise for his injured legs to be jumping/running treadmills, etc

Not sure, but it was announced last Monday, the day after Natsu basho ended, and I don't think they would announce it until after it has already been taped. I also don't think he would be allowed to take time out during a basho to do this, so I will assume that it was taped before.

Hakuho dominated like no other, winning all five events with Daisuke Naito to take the Grand Slam and win a trip to Euro Disneyland in France. We can only hope that he doesn't run into Takanohana's doctor...

And Daisuke just won the grand prize of cars for both of them! Truly a Tokyo Friend Park episode that will live in infamy!

that was a pretty good episode, although I guess it's to be expected with two champion athletes who also apparently have some sort of relationship and camaraderie between them. It was hilarious to watch how much Hakuho enjoyed the air hockey- jumping forward to take every free shot, but then allowing Naito to do it once they were on match point and it was clear they were going to win.

also, the Sanma no Manma episode was just on the other day in my region- it was pretty funny when Sanma mentioned about how Hakuho's marriage must have been a situation of "getting her knocked up". It looked like Hakuho didn't know whether to agree, laugh, or knock him out (I dunno...). Also interesting was his comment about some of the gifts he got for winning the previous yusho, including two tonnes of rice and one tonne of beef.
