Kintamayama Posted May 1, 2008 Author Posted May 1, 2008 (edited) A rare occurence today. Makuuchi rikishi actually came to Takasago for degeiko with Asashouryuu . It was their first time in Wonderland "I am really happy they came. I feel they are charming!!", he said, I kid you not. He had 17 bouts with them and went 16-1. Who were these brave warriors who dared venture where no rikishi has ventured recently of their own free will? They were Goueidou and Toyohibiki from Sakaigawa beya (maybe others too, but only these two were mentioned). On this festive occasion, Asa revealed he has a secret training weapon: He has developed a training regimen surrounding a hammer. You know, the kind you throw in the Olympics if you were a former Olympic hammer thrower named Koji Murofushi (gold medalist in Athens) and a close friend of Asashouryuu's who gives him one as a present "It really strengthens the hips!!", explained a jokigen Asa. That's the spirit boys, if you want to get to the top you have to train with the top. If I was a yokozuna wannabe I would be going there for degeiko often, though one would have to give 100%, sloppy 95% give up at the edge would get you injured - just ask Toyonoshima.
Jonosuke Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Perhaps they came to Takasago to check out the new boy.....but they didn't expect the big honcho to be there. Quite a misfortune for the bunch.

Kintamayama Posted May 2, 2008 Author Posted May 2, 2008 (edited) More on Asashouryuu's hosting of Goueidou and Toyohibiki yesterday. No wild stuff, no spectacular throws, no "after-pushes" - just plain, strong keiko. Asa showed them how to do sandbag training like he does-he let Goueidou's carry a 45 kilo sandbag and told him to do some squats. He did the same with Toyohibiki and told him to twist and turn in order to strengthen his hips. Takasago Oyakata was away on business, and Asa was in total control of the keiko. "The yokozuna is quick and heavy. It was a good lesson", summed Goueidou. "On the dohyo we are opponents , but if they come for keiko, they will be treated like brother-deshi.I'd like to teach them all I can!!", Asa said. Brotherly love: Edited May 2, 2008 by Kintamayama
aderechelsea Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 these are good news for Toyohibiki and Goeido. Both of them have much potential and showing will to train with the Yokozuna more often is making me rather optimistic about their future. i am more than happy ..... especially for Hibiki.

Asashosakari Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 The new "TeppoYoyo" was given to Asashouryuu as a present from Yoyo Ma: Bah, fun and games...if I was him, I'd show more concern about being attacked by Pacman.
Jonosuke Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 (edited) One thing he could do it to get a better PR, to do some keiko while former yokozuna and now NHK Ozumo commentator Kitanofuji is around. He has been loudly telling over the air he has such a regret over naming a rikishi who does so little keiko as one of the yusho candidates. I guess from a point of view of Asashoryu, he really does not want to mix it up so much especially considering the basho is so near and not wanting to risk aggravating his injury. While it's true, Asashoryu may have become a yokozuna with least amount of training sessions in recent memory, he does quite a bit of weight training, lifting rather stupendous poundage. So close up you can see he has really bulked up since his forced kyujo days, especially his chest and arms. During the last Doping Prevention meeting he has been told to stop those so called Garlic shots he does during a hon basho so he probably now has to eat more soft-shelled turtles to keep up his energy level but the question for this coming basho is how much his injury affects his normal sumo strategy. Kintamayama Posted May 3, 2008 Author Posted May 3, 2008 (edited) Asashouryuu trained at home today with heyamate Asasekiryuu and with Goueidou and Toyohibiki who came for some more degeiko again. 17 bouts, all wins. He was seen trying to adapt his tachiai to the individual opponents with much success. He also did some uchimuso moves. "Those were effective, huh? ", he ventured. When asked if he was totally ready, he answered, "Not yet, not yet.. My left hip got stretched a bit..", but still, was smiling broadly. He has rested only three days since the Banzuke was announced on April 24th. He's had around 75 bouts so far, which is quite a bit more than he usually does. Edited May 4, 2008 by Kintamayama
Mark Buckton Posted May 4, 2008 Posted May 4, 2008 My left hip got stretched a bit..", how was this phrased in Japanese K-san? I have never heard hip mean anything other than 'bottom / arse / rear' in Japanese. ie. the bit we sit on as opposed to the bony / hard bit at the side that I would term hip in English. (anyone else in Japan back that?) If it is his 'hip' in the Japanese sense, perhaps that equates to the 'koshi' I heard at Takasago. Perhaps the black Y hath a bad lower back? Sciatic (sp?) woes? Hmmm. (I am not worthy...)

Kintamayama Posted May 4, 2008 Author Posted May 4, 2008 Asashouryuu went for degeiko at Kasugano, which he seems to like. He had 16 bouts, won 15. He lost his second bout to Futenou, but then made short order of Tochinonada, Tochinoshin and Futenou himself, losing to none. "I have no real de-ashi yet. I do feel like I can fumikomi, but...". he reflected.
Jonosuke Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 "I have no real de-ashi yet. I do feel like I can fumikomi, but...". he reflected. It will be a pretty scarly basho if he can get all that fumikomi and de-ashi as he has been breezing by everyone - but then I'd like to see him do Tsuri again. Kind of miss that. All that putting the fear in everyone. We might as well give him the cup now.

Pelvis is kotsuban 骨盤 (bone basin). The hipbone is koshibone 腰骨 (hip bone). Lumbago is youtsuu 腰痛 (lower back pain) and Asa has been described as suffering from it. Sciatica is (yes, I looked it up) zakotsu shinkeitsuu 坐骨神経痛 (sciatic nerve pain).
Kintamayama Posted May 5, 2008 Author Posted May 5, 2008 The hipbone is koshibone 腰骨 (hip bone). That is cool-hipbone-koshibone! One of the great quirks of language, which I truly love. (Of course, it's not pronounced the same, but the way it's written..)

What weight lifting exercises does he do? What are his poundages? I understand he does 200 kg for the bench press. (Sigh...)
Kaikitsune Makoto Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 What weight lifting exercises does he do?What are his poundages? I understand he does 200 kg for the bench press. (Sigh...) I don't know what he does but I find the reporting about rikishi's weight training bizarre at times and there are totally silly comments like "Hokutoriki got a lot stronger as he bench pressed 140kg at the beginning and soon went up to 200kg!". Kisenosato did squats with 150kg couple of years ago while Wakanosato did bench presses and squats with 100kg. Small weights but rikishi don't do really heavy weights as there is not much sense in that. Then again Shiroikuma who knew Wakanosato well, said once Wakanosato did an easy 300kg deadlift after keiko without much prior training in deadlift and that is quite very impressive. Back in 2000 or so KaioU was introduced weight training. He was totally lost with leg curls at first and couldn't lift much. That wasn't due to lack of power in thigh flexors but just innervation confusion. He soon got used to it. At the same time he did a very easy 200kg squat by just trying how it feels without prior training as squatting doesn't need much tuning up the innervation after sumo background. Hokutoriki's bench press was a beautiful example of how refining the power happens. Hokutoriki surely didn't get MUCH stronger with the bench press keiko as compared with sumo keiko but his muscles just learned to generate power in bench press fast. 200kg is much more closer to "normal" level for strong rikishi without techical prowess in bench press. Konishiki who was always keen on lifting weights had 225-230kg bench press maximum if I remember correctly, Akebono lifted 220kg. Shoryu lifted 180kg 2-3 years ago after keiko and now he has done 200kg evidently. Many rikishi do basic stuff with weights but don't risk their bodies with that and toning up the body like Sentoryu did is not exactly the best way to avoid injuries. Sentoryu was probably 800kg+ powerlifter too but was still easily handled by strong makuuchi rikishi in power sumo. The beauty of sumo is that the power is uqiquitous due to heavy foes and the strain yotsuzumo puts on all parts of the body. The beauty of Ama is that he is exemplary in generating all his power in most positions. He has total harmony between muscle cells, CNS and spinal cord in particular and his cerebellum is among the best in sumo.
Harry Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 Speaking of masses I believe the article also says Asashouryuu increased his mass by 5kg to 152kg. Back to Japanese, please skip if it doesn't interest you: The hipbone is koshibone 腰骨 (hip bone). That is cool-hipbone-koshibone! One of the great quirks of language, which I truly love. (Of course, it's not pronounced the same, but the way it's written..) There is another word for hip bone which isn't close: zakotsu 坐骨 or sitting bone which when used with nerve 神経 becomes the sciatic nerve mentioned above. Due to rendaku 連濁 (changing of unvoiced sounds to voiced in compound words), the kunyomi 訓読み hone 骨 becomes bone when used as the latter components of many jukugo 熟語 (compound kanji). sebone 背骨 backbone; hoobone 頬骨 cheekbone; kaigarabone 貝殻骨 shoulder blade. But usually you'll hear its onyomi 音読み, which is kotsu in compounds like kenkoukotsu 肩甲骨 (or 肩胛骨) for shoulder blade.
Kintamayama Posted May 6, 2008 Author Posted May 6, 2008 Asashouryuu has been undergoing acupuncture treatment these last two days for his lower back and left cow. "I think it's become considerably better", he said, all smiles. Today he trained with the young ones at home. "I definitely still want to go for degeiko..", he warned.
Kaikitsune Makoto Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Asashoryu says he is SATAN. Ok, well he did kind of say that yes but there is now talk about Asashoryu becoming less satanic and turning into an angel. He has had bad manners, bad attitude, selfish arrogance but is it changing? Is he becoming an angel? Stay tuned for Kintamayama's report later on. He wil undoubtedly report about this revelation. But aren't dohyo demons satan's troops in a way? If he turns his back on satanic behaviour and the devil's advocates, will they attack him on the dohyo despite all shiko and will be get badly injured at Natsu basho???
