Doitsuyama Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Yamamotoyama made a big step nearer to juryo with a kimetaoshi win over lead makushita Bushuyama, while Shotenro is definitely going down as he fell to make-koshi with a lost to Katayama in a juryo visit. Asofuji is kachi-koshi, beating Chinese Nakanokuni. Daiyubu has a real chance for immediate juryo promotion even with a final loss as he is 6-0 now with a win over Shimoda. Lowly Fujimoto won against Kazafuzan to be the second 6-0 rikishi in makushita. Considering the big rank difference it's possible that Daiyubu gets another opponent if juryo promotion depends on the win. Kirinoumi and Shiratsuka also are 5-1, the latter one in his makushita debut and following two 6-1 in sandanme. Terashita lost to Mori and needs to win his last bout for a kachi-koshi. Kimenryu beat Koriyama in a bout between two winless veterans. The young Chiganoura-beya talent Masunoyama is coming off two consecutive make-koshi with a big comeback as he beat Ginkakuzan today for his sixth win, leading sandanme along with Asanotosa and also young Dewahayate. Dewaotori won a makushita-level heavy-weight bout against Maeta and 5-1 is quickly returning to better ranks. Yamatofuji's streak ended with a loss to Terukaze, a former makushita regular who had a bad stretch with 4-17 in sandanme after being in makushita as recent as Nagoya 2007. Kirizakura and 16 years old Kotowatanabe are the other two undefeated jonidan rikishi. Fukao is the sole jonokuchi rikishi at 6-0, but Chiyonishiki or Kiryu will join him, so a playoff shouldn't be necessary here. ilovesumo Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Masunoyama 6-0....yessssssss That's great. In January the flu hit the whole Heya hard and Masu climbed up the dohyo as a half-dead.... Now he's back. Yusho would be sooooo great..... (^_^) GO Masu!
Kaikitsune Makoto Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 (edited) I suppose the talk about Yamamotoyama being anything like Orora or other overly fat rikishi with no real talent can be forgotten now. I have seen three of his bouts this basho and in all of them he was totally dominating without any problems just driving or getting rid of his foes and the caliber of his foes was not bad either. Beating Takunishiki, Takakoyama and Bushuyama effortlessly is no small feat and can't be done just like that. Add that one sided win over Aran in Hatsu yusho deciding bout and the CV is looking quite promising. It is too bad there are no eye witness accounts concerning his loss to Kotoyutaka. Did Koto side step him and got to his side or was he actually pushed back? YMY looks like KOnishiki at his prime. Just taking the foe along and marching forward. I have no delusions that he can be as effective in juryo especially if he is weak when someone gets to his side but so far he looks ready for juryo for sure. Also he does have very good training grounds as now it seems he will become Baruto's main sparring partner if Sakaizawa's injury keeps him away for 2-3 months. Satoyama has weakened a lot due to illness or injuries and Minami is not getting to juryo before YMY. Shirononami is of course the other sekitori then. All in all YMY should have good keiko against fast rikishi like Shirononami and even Satoyama and measure his strength with Baruto. Looks good but would be important to see his losing bouts. Really hope he gets promoted after the basho so he will be on the stream regularly and gets 15 bouts. I hope he is put through a tough keiko regime by Onoe-oyakata. Here some butsukari with Minami: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dd3R8b3KCYI Aran wasn't that convincing today either. Sloppy evading uwatenage near the edge. Daiyubu won fast by slapdown and there was no real challenge there. It would be nice to have Daiyubu against YMY if he is not matched against that Fuji-person. Nice to see Takakoyama kk at high makushita. One more win and he can go for juryo promotion in Natsu! He has been doing keiko with Wakanosato and Kisenosato for years now. Now he's back. Yusho would be sooooo great..... (^_^) GO Masu! Not to mention makushita promotion (which was his aim for this year) !! 6 wins being ranked where he is right now have led to makushita promotion the last couple of times though it is not a sure-fire thing, but if he picks up that 7th win there will be no doubt left. (You are going off-topic...) In any case a highly satsifying basho - the yusho would be an enormous achievement. First ever win by Uwatedashinage too. Wonder how it happened. (In a state of confusion...)
aderechelsea Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Daiyubu won fast by slapdown and there was no real challenge there. It would be nice to have Daiyubu against YMY if he is not matched against that Fuji-person. This would indeed be nice even though it would probably ruin my boy's yusho chances. I don't think Daiyubu has proven that he is ready for Juryo yet but and a win against such a bigger opponent will give me hope for his sekitori future. Nice to see Takakoyama kk at high makushita. One more win and he can go for juryo promotion in Natsu! He has been doing keiko with Wakanosato and Kisenosato for years now. And what a physique this guy has !!!! his body looks like makuuchi material but he just doesn't seem to have it in him to make the step ahead.

I don't think there's anything to worry about...the in/out line for makushita promotions with 6 wins is Sandanme 50 these days (it used to be Sandanme 45 until a few years ago), so you can already congratulate him for making it. You're bringing a lot of good news lately, Asashosakari...First telling me that Kitasatsuma was going to avoid the winner of Fukao/Homarefuji (well he still lost, but that's a different matter) and now this. (You are going off-topic...) As for the comparison with Ryuden whose lack of size has turned out to be a barrier for him and probably the main reason for his struggles at this level, I don't expect Masunoyama to get overpowered in a similar way because practically the only way he has been beaten up to this point is by nage and pull-downs - he is a difficult rikishi to overpower due to his excellent strength which may make it easier for him to pick up some wins, but KK will be a hard task nonetheless. Anyway, Masunoyama did de-geiko with Ryuden prior to Kyushu and Ryuden won the majority of the bouts. I expect both of them to have established themselves in makushita by this time next year.
