Harry Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 (edited) Stop reading now if you haven't had dinner and don't like to eat sea cucumber or if you're bored of my Japanese words of the day postings. More than you ever wanted to know about sea cucumbers: http://www.coara.or.jp/~sueyoshi/data03/namako.html Asians eat sea cucumber. The Chinese call it "Sea Ginseng" and say it is medicinal as well as good for you. Namako (海鼠)is what the Japanese call it (delicacy there) which comes in aka(赤) (red), ao(青) (blue) or kuro(黒) (black) varieties at the store. Vinegared it is sunomono (酢の物, generic term for vinegared food). It is nice sliced with grated daikon(大根, big radish). Salted and sliced, their defense mechanism (look ma, no hands) intestines are called konowata (海鼠腸, literally means sea cucumber entrails, looks like another nice idea for a shikona, LOL). Their dried ovaries are konoko (コノ子). They are relatives of sea urchin, uni(海栗/海胆) which is very popular as sushi (寿司). Both are not easy to come by here in north america. Sasanishiki Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 From memory they are rather chewy and there is a really tough bit in the middle that you have to really use your molars to grind down - as you can tell, it was a real culinary delight that I carry with me to this day (In a state of confusion...)
Harry Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 No, the toge(棘, spicule, the support structure of some invertebrates) doesn't sound very pleasant to eat. Sometimes I think delicacy should really translate as 'dare' ;)
Fay Posted February 19, 2008 Author Posted February 19, 2008 My Kotoshoki seems to be very busy with his blog, hope he doesn't forget his training over it ;-) so here is the last part of their trip to the Cebu islands Kotoshogiku doing his morning practise and afterward a little walk through the shopping mall, Kotomisen (In a state of confusion...) and Kotokashiwadani with a nice Mickeymouse shirt ;-) this makes hungry of course in the evening we have alittle Valentine party I can't help, but Mickey looks a bit drunk Back again in Japan, picked up by Sadogatake Oyakata, not only a big body but also a big heart (that's what Kotoshogiku says ... but he is so right (Shaking head...) they enjoyed their stay on the philippines islands and now they will start to train again for the Osaka basho.
Fay Posted February 19, 2008 Author Posted February 19, 2008 After morning practise they celebrated Kotooshu's 25th birthday. (Birthday!)
aderechelsea Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 After morning practise they celebrated Kotooshu's 25th birthday. (Birthday!) i always forget that he is actually 3 years younger than me .... (In a state of confusion...) . (am i getting old or what ???)
Fay Posted February 22, 2008 Author Posted February 22, 2008 The preparations for Osaka are done but Shoki needs to build up some more weight for the basho it seems (Shaking head...)
Fay Posted February 24, 2008 Author Posted February 24, 2008 Not only Hakuho was chief of the police for one day, Kotoshogiku was too in the city of Daito, Osaka prefecture, giving an interview walking through the streets and distribute information material. And before going back to Tokyo with the Shinkansen he needs a little refreshment (Sigh...)
Fay Posted February 24, 2008 Author Posted February 24, 2008 Safely arrived in Osaka, Kotoshogiku is hanging around with the young guys practising some bowling, the new deshi seemed to be a real talent. Kotokashiwadani enjoys his icecream as do all others (Kotoshogiku eating nothing??? (Sigh...) , diet ???)
