Doitsuyama Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 Yamamotoyama won against Russian Aran to win his second lower division yusho, following the jonidan yusho in Natsu 2007. The heavy Yamamotoyama already had two 6-1 basho with losses only to Aran, but this time he beat his rival to get the seventh win. Three of the six juryo promotion candidates were sent to a test in juryo today and all failed as Sagatsukasa, Bushuyama and Hokutokuni lost. Lead makushita Kyokunankai can now be really sure of a promotion even with a final loss, and Wakatenro and Tosayutaka can overtake the three losers from today with a final win. Takunishiki indeed managed to win his tenth consecutive make-koshi avoiding bout and still is without make-koshi since his debut, crawling up the banzuke with his sixth consecutive 4-3 starting from Ms31. Russian Amuru really established himself in higher makushita, beating half-American Daishoyu for the kachi-koshi. Brazilian Takaazuma also is kachi-koshi at his career high rank as he won against 21 years old Nionoumi for the fourth win. The two aging talents Asahisakari and Mizuguchi (both 26 years old with only six days between them) are coming along with a 5-2 finish, reaching new career highs on the next banzuke. Hidenofuji missed the seventh win in sandanme, losing to Shoryu. Terashita meanwhile was able to pull off a win against makushita regular Mongolian Arawashi, so there will be a sandanme yusho playoff on senshuraku. Brazilian Kaisei finished 6-1, beating Rendaiyama with okuritaoshi. Mongolian talent Kyokushuho won against heavy Maeta and with 5-2 will debut in makushita next basho. Czech Takanoyama will be back in makushita as he also is 5-2 with a kotenage win against Satsumanishiki. Young Wakaryoma was at the right place and right time as the 16 years old won against lowly Kinokawa while Arawashi and Hazukiyama got beaten by rikishi of other divisions, so the jonidan yusho fell into the lap of the Onomatsu-beya rikishi who debuted in Haru 2007, same basho as Tosayutaka. Until today Kyokushuho was the youngest yusho winner (measured by current age, not at the time of the yusho), one month ahead of Wakanoho. Wakaryoma shattered that mark as he is almost three years younger than Kyokushuho, and of course Wakaryoma is the first ever yusho winner born in the Heisei era. In fact, Wakaryoma is the youngest yusho winner since Raido (still active as Dairaido) won the jonokuchi yusho in Natsu 1996. And he is the youngest yusho winner above jonokuchi since Akinoshima won the Nagoya 1982 jonidan yusho at 15 years and 4 months. I'd like to add that Takahanada was just three months older than Wakaryoma now at his makushita yusho in Natsu 1989. Ogata finished his debut basho with the 7-0 jonokuchi yusho as he beat Hazukiyama in jonidan as mentioned above. Ebashi finished 6-1 and is on his way back to high jonidan where he is belonging. Bealzbob Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 (edited) Nearly 50% oshidashi victories in makushita today. And great to see YMY with the yusho :) Promotion hopeful for Haru now (Dribbling...) Edited January 25, 2008 by Bealzbob

I thought he won too, Fay. He actually looked like like a sumotori today... Alot better than the first few times I've seen him.

Yeah, who cares about Ogata, the much bigger injustice was clearly that Morikawa had to fight a jonidan opponent, too. (Dribbling...)
messi19 Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 Really excited about the fact that Kyokushuho made it to makushita this quickly. At the age of 19 more so. Considering that he has already beat several rikishi who have proven themselves capable of KK'ing in makushita (including Aoba three times) I predict another solid KK in his makushita debut.
aderechelsea Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 Yeah, who cares about Ogata, the much bigger injustice was clearly that Morikawa had to fight a jonidan opponent, too. (Dribbling...) TELL ME ABOUT IT !!!!! (Dohyo-iri...) (Blushing...)
Terarno Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 Thank you Doitsuyama for the reports all basho long ! I never miss one, it's great.
