Kintamayama Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 (edited) Chiyotaikai was looking cheerful, even though he was down by five. "My body is genki. But when the hands don't move well, the feet will follow..". He did some propellorisms against Ama, but it wasn't good enough. "I said if I win 3 or 4, it would be good..", he added, reminding everyone he was coming off that elbow injury. "I knew it could come to this. Today, I was able to use my arm well. Every day I mount the dohyo, the arm gets better. I am not going to rest. I am going out there!", he declared. Maybe if he gets his first win today against Aminishiki, he will be able to ride the wave and turn things around. Edited January 19, 2008 by Kintamayama
ilovesumo Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 propellorisms :-P (Laughing...) (Punk rocker...)
Itachi Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Keep on fighting 'Taikai, that's the spirit! Both Kaio and 'Taikai have been great Ozeki. By great Ozeki, I mean that amongst those Ozeki who cannot be expected to advance to Yokozuna, they have been great. 'Taikai's injuries have not been as chronic as Kaio's and so the expectation of intai has not dominated my expectations for him each basho as it has for Kaio. It seems that the hints of lingering injuries for him are more than a rumour but I am glad to hear that he plans to 'ganbarize'. Each time I go to select an Ozeki for sumogames, I look for someone healthy and vigourous enough to select instead of 'Taikai but none of the other Ozeki have earned my confidence yet. Perhaps eventually Kotooshu will become a reliable winner. 'Mitsuki can't be expected to remain active for too much longer at his age and I keep expecting Kaio to retire.
Yangnomazuma Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 'Mitsuki can't be expected to remain active for too much longer at his age and I keep expecting Kaio to retire. I often forget that Mickey is actually older than 'Taikai. It's hard since 'Taikai has been around Ozumo for so much longer. That said, Mickey has a lot less wear and tear on his 30+ year old body than does 'Taikai. Sounds like a good poll....who will retire first?
Washuyama Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 'Mitsuki can't be expected to remain active for too much longer at his age and I keep expecting Kaio to retire. After watching today's bouts, I say they'll intai together soon. Maybe they can get a group discount on danpatsu-shiki's... It's pretty sad that I have more faith in the Sekiwake and Komusubi to win each day than I do the Ozeki... (Punk rocker...)
Peterao Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 What the hell is Chiyotaikai doing? Is there some kind of prize for becoming the first ozeki to go 0-15? Doesn't he realize the havoc he's wrecking on my Hoshitori game?? (Punk rocker...)
Ruziklao Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 It's pretty sad that I have more faith in the Sekiwake and Komusubi to win each day than I do the Ozeki... (Punk rocker...) Actually, ozeki scores sum is negative (10-14), while lower sanyaku sum is positive (14-10) at the moment. Taking into account that komusubi already faced one yokozuna each, while ozeki did not, it says something in the direction of Washuyama's feeling.
Kintamayama Posted January 19, 2008 Author Posted January 19, 2008 And...officially kyujo. "Right elbow has not healed satisfactorily". Chiyotaikai has been telling everyone he wishes to continue, but his shisho Kokonoe said: "There is no way he can keep on showing this kind of miserable sumo". 12th kyujo, 11th kadoban
messi19 Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 (edited) This is actually bad news for all of the other ozeki as they are struggling to reach KK because they now miss out on a sure win. It also means tomorrow is the last sanyaku bout for Kotoshogiku against Hakuho..if he somehow manages the upset does he have a "Miyabiyama Natsu 2006" in him? In any case he could really be getting an ozeki run started (or continued). Edited January 19, 2008 by messi19
Andreas Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 Its pretty likely that Kotoshogiku will go double digits in sanyaku this tourney and becomes a sansho candidate, but dont talk about an ozeki run unless he has two tournaments like this in a row. Sadogatake Oyakata would of course be more than happy with 3 ozekis from his stable. Actually his schedule hasnt been that tough this tourney, he lost against Asa, didnt fight Hakuho yet and doesnt have to fight Kotooshuu and Kotomitsuki. Winning against Chiyo and Kaio doesnt mean much this tourney.
ilovesumo Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 He could have found out the "not healed" a bit earlier... Kokonoe spoke! (Order, order!)
Asashosakari Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 Its pretty likely that Kotoshogiku will go double digits in sanyaku this tourney and becomes a sansho candidate, but dont talk about an ozeki run unless he has two tournaments like this in a row. He did have nine wins in sanyaku last basho, which would be a perfectly fine foundation for an ozeki run...if this turns out to be Shogiku's "basho of a lifetime" and he finishes 13-2 or something, he'd definitely be in an ozeki run for March. Now, whether he's actually likely to finish 13-2... All in all, it'll probably be easier to get 13 wins this time and 11 next basho than the other way around, given that March will have Taikai fighting for his rank (and he may not be the only kadoban ozeki) and Asashoryu closer to full potential.
Doitsuyama Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 Winning against Chiyo and Kaio doesnt mean much this tourney. And he even hasn't beaten Chiyotaikai this basho! What's that telling us? Not much, but by and large I disagree with you - beating Kaio, Ama, Aminishiki and Kisenosato does mean a lot this basho.
XiaoTan Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 It's no longer purely hyporthetical that all Ozeki are kadoban next Basho (with Kotooshu as Sekiwake) - that would make for a really interesting basho, especially if Kotoshogiku and Ama may be in an Ozeki run. Has it ever happenend with three ore more Ozeki?
sashimaru Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 ... doesnt have to fight Kotooshuu and Kotomitsuki. I think this is a disadvantage for Giku.
XiaoTan Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 ... doesnt have to fight Kotooshuu and Kotomitsuki. I think this is a disadvantage for Giku. Right, that means that Wakanosato (at 3-4) and Asasekiryu (at 5-2, but without a single Sanyaku opponent) are currently stronger than both Mickey and Oshu. (Sign of approval...)

I haven't (the online Japanese newspapers I've found are still reporting about Day 6), and it's not on the NSK website (yet). btw - I am not doubting Kintamayama at all about this, I just want to read the articles.

Fukurou Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 Well.. Thank you for the links. Here I am, looking at all these online newspapers (including nikkansports.com) and coming up empty, and it's the one place I should have thought of looking first - yahoo.jp!
Kintamayama Posted January 20, 2008 Author Posted January 20, 2008 The official medical certificate: "Right elbow joint sprain- requires ten days of treatment". 0-7 is the worst record ever for an Ozeki from shonichi since the 15- day bashos were introduced. Chiyotaikai still wanted to continue after yesterday's loss. "I'm getting better day by day. I want to go on. I'm really frustrated. It's a good experience!", he said. However, back in the judges' room, Kokonoe's patience ran out. "No way he's getting better. Guys that don't do keiko can't win!!", he said. He has been telling everyone around him that Taikai should at least do shiko or suriashi to strengthen his lower body, but he just does nothing. As an Ozeki, he has a responsibility, but lacking that understanding, he has brought dishonor to the rank with this shameful display.
Sashohitowa Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 Chiyotaikai fills me up with even more respect to him than I already got... Now that is a spirit of Ozeki! Never retreating, never surrendering! No matter if someone even may find it silly, I find his behavior this basho really honorable. Like at war - fight till last breath. And even stays positive - "I am getting better and better each day", he says. That's what I call spirit and determination! Better be 0-15, than 0-0-15 - it's all about the fight, and the passion for win.. Isn't it? (Shaking head...)
