With the current wall of flame guys, i want to see if wakanoho had a kotooshu like wall heating, in that its a one and done makekoshi for a while.

Osh heated the wall at Komusubi, so I don't think it's a good comparison. Ranks have to be factored here..

I meant the one and done factor, not the rank that it was achieved. There have been a few one and done makekoshi guys who went on to be solid makuuchi guys. Some like kotooshu all the way at komusubi. Some in juryo, some in makushita. The wall seems to be different for different guys.

If waka picks up 3 more wins, i too think he will struggle next basho, but not overly worried about it. Actually looking forward to it as he will probably learn more in that basho as he did even in his first eye opening juryo basho.

Day 11 results

Not many guys in action today, we did have our first dismissal from the list. sd77 Mise. Since hes not a big name, didnt get very far, doesnt merit consideration for wall of flame. BIG news is that tosayutaka finally lost another one, aran getting revenge over his loss last tournament to them. This now sets up a final match for two guys who have faced each other 4 times in honbasho already if i recall correctly, aran vs. yamamotoyama, the guy everyone wanted to write off already.

Other wall news.... Kyokushuho got kachikoshi. One more win and he will be in makushita next basho. Tochinoshin got kachikoshi, thus ends his wakanoho-like path through the ranks. Wakanoho at this stage heated the wall big time. He and wall of flame member sakaizawa two of the guys tied for juryo lead.

Tomorrow i predict we lose at least one more to the wall. Hoping its not the leader of this list, takunishiki. But you can only tempt fate as it were so many times. This will be the SIXTH Basho in a row where he has needed to win his last bout or last two bouts to stave off makekoshi.

Err, who was doing that? I recall plenty of people saying that they weren't surprised that he had a setback in mid-makushita, but rather few comments to the effect that he can be written off altogether. You're the guy whose enthusiasm goes hot/cold based on singular events, not "everyone".

Writing off as just being a sandanme/makushita guy. After his last basho i actually dont recall much positive said about him, if any, apart from me. There were comments comparing him to orora, comments about him being just a high sandanme guy...comments about him only getting as far as he did because of his size, but that in makushita his size would not be an advantage, and thus just be a low makushita high sandanme guy.

I on the other hand think he eventually makes sekitori, based on how even he was going up with guys like aran, ri, minami. I think if one is exposed by the wall, it happens earlier like in low sandanme, or at least the beginning of the wall starts showing itself with some 4-3, 4-3 records. I didnt think one goes from 7-0's and 6-1's, to a 1-6 because he reached his peak, but rather other factors.

Not sure what you mean by me going hot and cold based on single events. The guys i havent liked that much like kaio and hokutoriki, and kisenosato, etc. ive disliked consistently for a long time. The guys i have liked such as kotooshu, wakanoho, aran, homasho, ozone, and a plethora of others, ive liked consistently for a while. Heck the whole reason for my "wall of flame" section is to see how guys who might hit the wall once, bounce back to continue to rise up.

I think perhaps he is referring to things like you declaring Aran to be "officially a bust" a few basho ago when he went 1-2 in his first three bouts in Sandanme.

BTW, I wonder why no one has mentioned the fact that 4 of Aran's 6 wins have been by Hatakikomi? I hope we don't have another Giajin back-peddler on our hands.

I did, but on another forum. (Sign of approval...) It's not limited just to this basho either:

Wins of Aran

yorikiri 12

hatakikomi 11

oshidashi 6

okuridashi 2

uwatenage 2

yoritaoshi 2

hikiotoshi 1

tsukidashi 1

tsukiotoshi 1

Though, my preliminary impression is that he isn't that much of a back-peddler, but a somewhat more technically equipped Kokkai clone.

You can judge for yourself as his bout against Tosayutaka is up on the French forum. I'd say this is pretty typical for his style from what I have seen. So far it is more similar to Chiyotaikai than to his Ossetian fellows, I'd say, and that's a positive thing. It's not as refined of course but he does have the powerful foreward thrusts and some timing skills for the best yanking moment. It's not the most beautiful sumo but if he can hold that energy level over 15 days it's a nice diversion from the usual, for me at least. His Ossetian senpai sadly have long stopped even trying to have energy for 15 days.

Thanks, I've only seen one of his bouts up until now and all the hatakikomi had me wondering about him. It's nice to know he appears to be a little more diverse.

Aran appears to be a great athlete. A very talented and powerful power sports exhibit. If I remember correctly, his appetite is huge too. He is also quite old, turning 24 in a while and is physically very ready already (say that fast 10 times). He likes that tsuppari rampage but changes fast into yotsumode when forced. He is not overly big but not small either and has very good muscle mass. I am sure he will be very nice addition to juryo soon. I don't know how much technique he has really but must wait for juryo time. Very honed athlete. Good for sumoU. His bouts against Tosayutaka have been really intense. Nice rivalry there if both stay healthy.

Yes, but i still liked aran. I liked him so much that his start as i said marked him as a bust in my book as per my expectations of him, as i said. I had expected someone of that age, someone who was the world champion, someone who beat ichihara twice, someone who beat the 2 time world champion, ex makushita daishochi, etc. etc. to absolutely blow by the lower ranks, not have 3 losses in his last 9 bouts in jonidan and mid/low sandanme. Especially when one of those losses was to mankajo. So in that sense, yes he totally completely busted my expectations of him up to that point. But i didnt start saying he would be a career low makushita/sandanme guy because of it.

I do think he is a unique european. Hes not that tall compared to kotooshu, baruto, roho, tochinoshin, wakanoho, etc. Hes not a small skinny no fat guy like takanoyama or amuruu. Hes not a huge blob like ooorora. In the bouts ive seen him in here and in the world championships, he has a very unique skill set. Like kakitsune said, hes a pusher thruster, but also can go yotsu without much problem. And his strength is quite good. Size wise, i can see him filling out to an identical asashoryu body. Hes the same height as asa, and about 15kg or so less at this point than him.

Day 12 results

We lost a division 3 guy, daigen. No surprise there. There are still 4 guys in danger of makekoshi. Most notable being Takunishiki who won today to stay at least a couple more days on the list. The ones from the lists who have a shot at yusho in their division are Tochinoshin, Yamamotoyama, Sakaizawa, Terashita, and Aran.

Day 13 results

Only one member of division 3 survived this basho, Azumanami...he will stay division 3 next basho. Meanwhile division 3 next basho we know will be headed by ogata who got 7-0 in his debut this basho. In division 2, everyone got kachikoshi accept mise. Everyone will most likely be staying division 2, as there are no real standouts in that group. Aran/yamamotoyama continued the streak of you win one, ill win one, as yama squared beat aran for the makushita yusho, costing aran a high spot in the promotion zone. Takunishiki continues his improbable comeback run of kachikoshi on the final day. Does anyone know who the last person was to get so many kachikoshi in a row to start their career?

Meanwhile, tochinoshin controls his own destiny now for juryo yusho. He has sole lead in that division thanks to fellow list member sakaizawa's victory over kitazakura.

Day 14 results

List guys might have a shot at a lot of yusho this basho. Tochinoshin needs one more win for juryo yusho. YMY already wrapped up makushita yusho, Terashita now has a shot for sandame yusho if he wins kettei sen. Ogata, not on this list, but for all intents and purposes should have been, already wrapped up jonokuchi yusho. Tosayutaka i imagine hurt his chances at his superfast promotion with a juryo loss today.

Well, even though its only day 14, with ichihara's victory today we now know who will be and who wont be on next basho's heating lists, as there are no question marks left.

M10 Wakanoho 9-5

j3 sakaizawa 9-5

ms58 Yamamotoyama 7-0

Hanaoka

Fukao

Yamashita

Division 2 (no one gets promoted from division 2 this time...pretty unremarkable group of guys...)

sd68 Hamauzu 4-2

sd96 Tamakaizan 4-2

Division 1 (and for the first time ever, division 1 stays 100% the same, not only did we not lose anyone, but the order most likely stays the same for everyone as well)

More than Half of yusho were won buy list guys who never have had makekoshi, or who are on our wall of flame list. Makushita, sandanme, juryo, jonokuchi. Next basho will be fun as well with finally the first seemingly promising group of new guys since the aran/ymy/minami/ri debut class of a while back. They probably wont be as sucsessful, but at least it will be nice to have some nice division 2 and 3 guys the next few basho.
