Just for the record - and because some are taking this Mt. Fuji thing WAY too seriously - Asa was KIDDING about the helicopter, so please lighten up and don't take everything that is written as gospel.

Happy New Year everyone.

Now, back into my own self-imposed cocoon........

Who am I to argue with Takasago, who took it seriously enough to distinctly "not allow" it at least three times in 6 different online papers?

But then again, Takasago..

You seem to underestimate Takasago. He must be a very serious person. He is very busy to show everybody how efficiently and severily he is managing his Yokozuna, denying him everything he can..... How funny a person.... The comedy is still going on !

As the pictures on the "Keiko hajime" thread prove beyond a shadow of a doubt, training at Takasago has commenced. Asashouryuu had 17 bouts against Asasekiryuu and lost three of them. He was seen giving up morozashi at the tachia-ai, proving that his tachiai still needs work. OTOH, when he started off well, he was quick on his feet and cleverly devious. "Not bad at all..", he said of his vigorous and vital start. At one point, after executing a left uwate, he went to put on an elastic supporter on his old wound-the left elbow, worrying those around him. "I'm OK. I'll do my best to avoid injury", he reassured everyone. "I had a great New Year's holiday. I ate mochi!!", he added. Asked what his goals for Hatsu were, he replied: "Nothing unusual.. I'll just gambarize!"

I'm assuming he'll be matched against Dejima on Shonichi. Shouldn't have to worry about any tricks, although that is alot of weight to test a bothersome elbow..

Posted (edited)

Agreed, he is not likely to face Dejima on shonichi, rather Kotoshogiku. Also with Kotoshogiku he needn't worry about any tricks, but it's nearly as much mass, and a younger more energetic mass to handle. If he gives up morozashi to the Geeku, he could end up with a quick loss...

Edit: Kisenosato is the likely candidate for Asa's day 2 torikumi, though it could also be Toyonoshima...

Head2's: Geeku 6-0, Kissy 6-1, Eddy Munster 3-0 but maybe the one to watch out for.

Admittedly, I didn't do in depth research, but I thought Ye met Ke and Yw met Kw... Doesn't matter, though, he should win both..

You may find older precedents to back that up, or the odd heya-mate wrench in the gears, but these days the opposite is standard torikumi on shonichi.

"It's a new year so I have a sunny feeling.. Everything is new.. I will gambarize this year as well"

More facts from the keiko:

There were some foreign tourists visiting-all the Oyakata were suited up, neckties and all.

Asa did 100 quick push ups.

He did suriashi with that thirty kilo sandbag.

During his holiday in Okinawa, he had his head nibbled by a lion (??). "It's a good omen!!", he explained. (Not a real lion, a new year dancing lion )

When asked if he will have some bouts with Hakuhou during the YDC soken on January 8th: "Ask the other side.. Which one is above the other??" His achievements and experience are "above" "the other side", so he's essentially saying " The one who should be asking is Hakuhou"..

Asa sends Asa into orbit during butsugari keiko:

Are you ready for this??? Here, for the first time, the sandbag!!!

(And, of course, the Plasticbag is still there..)

Takasago Oyakata looks somewhat like a Daruma doll, non?

"I love slumber parties.. Where can I put my sleeping bag?"

probably the Chinese type of lion seen during Chinese New Year Festivals - they are in many major stores and department stores this week dancing, nibbling etc

actually, one other the media have left out perhaps - he was asked if he would go on degeiko by one of the reporters - and he responded 'Ah, it's a little difficult, everyone is so strict' with a wry smile.

Asashouryuu went to Isegahama-beya (former Ajigawa) today for degeiko - 24 bouts. 17 against Ama, 5 against Aminishiki and 2 against Juryo Asoufuji, and went 21-3. With Ama he practiced a low tachi ai and overwhelmed him time and again by doing quick forward-moving sumo. Aminishiki was seen pushing Asa around a bit, but Asa always withstood his attacks and using his speed managed to turn the tables on him. Even after 24 bouts, Asa looked calm and was not out of breath. "It's a wonder.. I wish today was shonichi. But there are still 10 days, so I guess I better not talk like this yet..", he said cheerfully. When Isegahama Oyakata asked them to end the keiko, Asa asked,"Don't you guys do butsugari??" So he lent his chest to Ama, going at it so ferociously that Ama threw up.

What were Asa's parting words after keiko? "Ama has really gotten stronger and.."

"I had good keiko"

"I will gambarize".

"My ankle still hurts a bit but I'm OK'

"A great start for a new year. I'm feeling revitalized!!"

"Haku- who?'

The answer is A, but tomorrow it will probably B.

"Every blow of the Yokozuna's attack is heavy.. It was a good lesson for me before the basho. I have received some genkiness!", said Ama who was subject to some hard thrashing by Asashouryuu and was even thrown against the wall. He did, however, manage to win three bouts. Being on a possible Ozeki run, he continued training even after vomiting during butsugari with Asa.

"Patience!! Aren't you frustrated that you are losing??", said Asashouryuu unto Ama during their fierce keiko. "It's a great honor that the Dai-Yokozuna came to visit us. He has brought health and power and luck to me. I went all out as not to be discourteous, but his tsuppari is awesome. I'll do my best , not thinking of a promotion- I'll just do my own Sumo", said Ama. His mage dangled to his neck, his body was all red, and he was totally out of breath.

Did Ama really call Shoryu a dai-yokozuna? Do Kitanoumi and Kokonoe know of this? (Laughing...)

of course He is Dai Yokozuna. Respect to Ama (Laughing...) for being always respectful to 9th Dai Yokozuna Asashoryu.

"Dai Yokozuna Asashoryu, The 9th Dai-Yokozuna is born."- This topic was discussed long ago in this forum when Asa won 10th yusho

Much as it pains me to agree with IMD, how could you not call a Yokozuna who has earned 21

Emperor's Cups a Dai-Yokozuna? Just look at the overall records of the 69 Yokozuna and find

how few, how very few managed even 10 wins much less 21. Even Kitanofuji has to be

considered borderline Dai, certainly Wajima has to be in that catgegory. Admittedly Asa has

his faults and limitations but results clearly speak for themselves and he is certainly a Dai

Yokozuna by I believe even his most ardent detractors.

Asashoryu is top 5 in the modern era. Only Chiyonofuji, Taiho, Takanohana and maybe Kitanoumi are in his league.

Ama knows were he stands- below Shoryu in rank and age so he has to be respectful (in 2 ways), that's the rules- "Dai-" or no "Dai-".

Yes he did, and no, they probably don't.

Asashouryuu preparing for his role in the upcoming feature film "The Mummy 3". The scene is where the Mongolian Mummy gets his new orange battle uniform he mail-ordered, but is not happy with it and is about to strangle his mortified tsukebito with his ancient bandages:
