Asojima Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Hitachigo (Sd83W) ended a 3 basho MK skid with a 4-3 record in Kyushu. He started with 2 straight losses, but picked up wins in the last 3 matches. Should start the new year from about Sd65. Ganbare in 08!
Washuyama Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Not a great basho for my guys. I felt pretty good a couple days ago for Toyohibiki (M7E) as he was 7-4 on day 11. Dropping the last four days resulted in a disappointing MK. Takakiho (Ms53e) faces demotion to Sandamne again after a 2-5. Fusanohana (Sd89e) also went 2-5 and is heading south. The bright side of it all is Koriki (Jd12) who started 0-2, finished 4-3 and his third straight KK and should be back in Sandamne to start 2008.
ilovesumo Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Great, good, bad, worse. But two Jonidan Yusho in a row for my "sons", that's something (Laughing...)
Taizeniki Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Sadly, after a string of three, 4-3 KKs, Kazafuzan went 3-4 MK as Ms22 this basho. Come on Tiger, you can break through the ceiling!
Peterao Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Sandanme 9W Kamakura fell to the mammoth Orora to fall to 4-3 this basho, but with KK may be within shouting distance of Makushita next basho.
Golynohana Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Kinryuzan was 6-1 in kyushu after zensho in aki. After long injury pause he seems now finally healthy and also stronger and more mature, so I have big expectation for him. maybe sekitori in 2009 (Shaking head...) Go Kimu!!!
Itachi Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 The good, Sasaki Ms58 6-1 !!! This will launch him to a new career high rank. Perhaps he can make it to Juryo one day yet! The disappointing, Nishikikaze Ms 39 2-5. This isn't all that surprising. I would have guessed 3-4 but I'd hoped for 4-3. Nishikikaze is still good enough to stay in Makushita but there are no expectations of reaching Juryo anymore.
Azumashida Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Masuko, Sd54e, got his kachi-koshi on day 12 but then lost his last bout. With this 4-3 he should just reach his career-highest rank (Sd48w being the landmark so far).
Doyobi Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Teraoho from Shikoroyama Beya only managed a 2-5 in his Sandanme debut basho :( Better luck next time!
Kotononami Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Heavy Mankajo Sd52e went 1-6. Only one victory in his 4th bout against Ikeda on day 7. (Shaking head...). He should keep a place in lower sandanme ranks for Hatsu. He's not 18 years old yet so has time to progress (Laughing...)
Andreas Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Ri had two early losses in lower makushita but recovered to a respectable 5-2. He hasnt hit the wall yet, Im curious if he will keep up the current results or hit the (temporary) wall soon. Even if he might hit the wall and go MK in upper makushita, he has a lot of potential to recover and improve, being 2nd youngest in the division, with high school sumo experience and a great frame.
aderechelsea Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Daiyubu had a stellar performance and will be back in high Makushita. Lots of keiko till January and some of the momentum he has from this basho (i am glad this is the shortest break between bashos) and the prospect of a promotion to sekitori is in sight. Hoshihikari has gone a long way from just "another skinny mongolian with technique" to a great sekitori who can hold his own in Juryo with ease. All KKs thus far in his sekitori career. wooooohooooooo !!!!
kaiguma Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Did I miss last basho's report entirely? ...sorry to my Brazillian boys for that :-P Kaisei extends to a 2-basho MK skid with another 3-4, now from Sd56W. Probably will fall to somewhere around Sd70. But he is still young, and I'm sure we will see him reach makushita early next year! Look for a 6-1 performance, or maybe even the Sandanme yusho for Hatsu 2008. I think he'll need to lose about 5 kilos to achieve that feat... Kainohama went back under the knife I believe, and very sad since he was quite genki before reinjuring his ankle. Saddest of all that the injury was just from a stroll and not even keiko! Hmm, maybe better than during keiko as he seemed hopeful that it was not as bad as the last injury. I am wishing for him to heal quickly so he doesn't go BG. From career high Sd20E, can anyone estimate how many basho it would take for Kainohama to drop off the banzuke?
Asashosakari Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 From career high Sd20E, can anyone estimate how many basho it would take for Kainohama to drop off the banzuke? Sd20 -> Sd80 -> Jd40 -> Jd110 -> somewhere in Jonokuchi -> b-g My adoptee Koryu had a fine 10-5 score in mid-Juryo, but I must admit that his sumo didn't look very convincing to me, with lots of inconsistency from day to day. His 6-5 score through eleven days was probably more representative of his quality this basho, but I'll take the final four wins. :-P First appearance in hailing distance to Makuuchi next basho, and I don't think he's quite "there" yet. 6-9 or better would be fine by me.

Sd20 -> Sd80 -> Jd40 -> Jd110 -> somewhere in Jonokuchi -> b-g Thanks, I knew it would be you to answer that, but when I call you by name I usually don't get a response, ala Murphy I imagine. No sweat, 6 basho is plenty of time. I hope he takes full advantage and lets the injury heal completely! Last time he was a bit lower in rank, jd35e, and had been fighting poorly while injured for nearly a year before being forced to pull out and recuperate. He actually came back one basho sooner than banzuke-gai, resuming at Jk34w.

messi19 Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 Chiganoura hopeful Masunoyama who was ranked at a career-high sandanme19 this basho unfortunately suffered his second career make-koshi at 3-4. As usual and that is reason for hope Masunoyama suffered all his losses by nage or twist/pulldown. The truly impressive thing in his case is that he has only suffered one career loss (in 8 basho) by what could be considered a true overpowering kimarite (yorikiri, oshidashi, oshitaoshi etc.). He does get beaten by nage a lot, especially with the uwatenage. I'd love to be able to watch more of him to find out if he is really that strong as it seems judging purely by the stats.
Raishu Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 (edited) Minami finished with a solid 5-2 record and will overtake his heyamate Yamamotoyama on the Hatsu 2008 Banzuke. Another disappointing basho for Shibuya who keeps struggling with a 3-4 in upper Sandamne. The twins Kainomiya and Takanomiya finished with 3-4 / 4-3. The KK for Takanomiya probably means new career high rank in January. Edited November 28, 2007 by Raishu
Manekineko Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 Kotokonjo's change of shikona (and losing the "neko" part of it) didn't help him any to survive in rarified heights of jonidan - 1-6 and back to jonokuchi, I guess.
aderechelsea Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 Daiyubu got up to Makushita 9 after his superb 6-1 performance, and will be in Juryo by Haru 2008 due to the upcoming Yusho he'll win .... (or not?)
kaiguma Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 (edited) Well, I think everyone knows how my first adoptee (Baruto) has been doing so I will tell you about my second adoptee. Oazuma had a fine 5-2 record ranked at Jonidan 07w. He has now moved up to the Sandanme division (for the first time in his career) at the 75w rank. (Yusho winner...) DLB Tamanoi's Oazuma? He was so huge and strong when he joined, at age 15? I really thought he would get through to sandanme much faster than this... are the Tamanoi boys clowning around too much? Has anyone seen his bouts to have a feel for his presence/style on the dohyo? Edit: started in maezumo just having turned 16, 18 this May. He looks a bit on the soft side, like our dear moto-Tooyama. Ah, but he's plenty young. Too early to write him off just yet. I hope he springs forth now and blazes through to mid-Makushita before this time next year. Edited January 4, 2008 by kaiguma
