Just curious as to the opinions. It seems the only ones in the top half of Juryo with a decent record are Iwakiyama and Shimootori. Will Ichihara get some banzuke luck based on his 13-2? Obviously, I haven't put in any effort to study past history, just wondering...

Well, now that Kaiho, Kasuganishiki and Yoshikaze all lost today, I'll say that I don't have a clue this time. The only sure exchanges are Iwaki for Tokitsuumi's rankless ghost and Shimootori for Hakurozan's kneeless corpse. I'd say that Kasuganishiki should be out, too, because he just went MK without any spots to spare, but a) he's actually in a comparatively better position than Kaiho and Yoshikaze, and b) I really don't have any insight as to whether the banzuke makers would want to promote Ichihara after just one juryo basho if they don't absolutely have to. And then c) there's the Kaio wildcard.

I saw him live in info-sumo.net site, and I should say that I understand your enthousiasm. He is really impressive and I wish him well too. (Sign of approval...)

And we'll have a whole lot of Juryo promotees too.

Five spots guaranteed, from what I can see, or six if Kaio really calls it quits (if not, it will be crow ragout tonight, for being too gullible...).

So we have Tochinishin, Kimurayama, Tamawashi, Yakigaya and Kirinowaka in, while Tochisakae must wait for the Kaio rollercoaster to arrive at its destination.

Edit: Tochisakae != Bushuyama....

Or the lucky guy in the event of a Kaio intai might be Kyokunankai, what with the current reluctance to promote guys like Tochisakae and Bushuyama who "only" go 4-3 at Ms5. I agree though, it sure looks like the first five you mentioned are going up, no matter what's happening with Kaio - all debuts, too!

I don't see how Kaio's status has anything to do with Makuuchi promotions. There are no set number of Ozeki, so only having three is no issue. Will they make an extra slot (either K or S or single M-17) just to keep the number in Makuuchi even?

The number of makuuchi rikishi is fixed at 42.

Last Basho Baruto comes from J9w with 13-2 only to Maegashira 16e.

I think it's not enough for Ichihara.

...and Tochinohana? Is he save with 2-13 from J3e?

think he is.

Yep, I think so too. Normally, he'd be expected to drop something like 9-11 ranks -- and competition for the lower juryo ranks isn't very fierce this time.

They can keep Yoshikaze and Kaiho without many problems. As to Kasuganishiki, they can demote him only if they decide to promote Ichihara or Chiyohakuho. Both promotions could be considered Banzuke LUCK, but we never know. Maybe they will keep Kasuganishiki, promote Ichihara and demote Yoshikaze...or...
