Xris Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 I don't think henka lovers are going to change their mind today. Look at how easy it was for Tokitenku today against Chiyotakai.
aderechelsea Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 he was just worried he would run away with the yusho so he made certain everyone is at the same level .. :-O this was probably the beggining of Taikai "crumble" ....
Jakusotsu Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 He was just afraid to get beaten senseless by Taikai again.
aderechelsea Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 He was just afraid to get beaten senseless by Taikai again. that too ....
Bealzbob Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Another musing. If Tosayutaka was to yusho with 7-0 from Ms33 he would likely be promoted to between Ms-2 & Ms-4 and would then be in line to be the first rikishi since 1979 to get through makushita in only 2 basho (Kotetsuyama in 1979) and only the 2nd person since 1948 to have debuted in sandanme and gone straight through makushita 2 basho later. If he was to go 7-0 and go to Ms2-Ms4, then depending on banzuke luck, any KK could get him into juryo. Just thought it was an interesting statistic. Feel free to tell me I'm spending too much time on Doitsuyama's database ;-)
Doitsuyama Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Another musing. If Tosayutaka was to yusho with 7-0 from Ms33 he would likely be promoted to between Ms-2 & Ms-4 and would then be in line to be the first rikishi since 1979 to get through makushita in only 2 basho (Kotetsuyama in 1979) You are omitting the makushita 60 tsukedashi debutants who managed to get through makushita in two basho, if by accident or on purpose I don't know. But I guess they should count too since their starting point in makushita is the worst possible. Besides Kotetsuyama you then also have Wajima (1970), Asashio (1978, now Takasago-oyakata), Musoyama (1993) and Miyabiyama (1998).
Kaikitsune Makoto Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 When Wakatenro beat Tochinoshin, he made a very visible fist pump in the air before trying to disguise it as some kind of "just streching"/"waved to my dog"/"needed to avoid contact with falling Shin" etc. Very happy man. Very happy man. Tosayutaka has lot of confidence all over his face and in talk too. It is good. It is too bad he is so damn short. Otherwise he could be a real threat very soon also in makuuchi. Who knows though..he does tsuri to 170kg guys and just says he likes to do tsuri. Very good approach. I hope he never loses again in sumoU. Musing: Roho has angel like hops and pops on the dohyo nowadays. One against Nada when he hopped away and today he did pirouettes and hops. Hopp hopp ja nakute hop hop de gozaimasu

I meant purely the people who went 'through' makushita, as in the rikishi who came up from sandanme and went on to juryo.
Asashosakari Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 I suppose the more interesting (or I should say, less arcane :-() factoid is the one that the Japanese newspapers have also latched onto already, namely that Tosayutaka could be only the second-ever rikishi (post-1958) to go from mae-zumo to juryo in only six basho. Well, the jinx is on now. ;-)
Washuyama Posted November 20, 2007 Author Posted November 20, 2007 Another musing. Bealzbob Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Maybe we'll get lucky and Tosayutaka won't write a book alleging bout fixing... I'm reluctant to make a tongue-in-cheek remark about the physical threat made to Tosayutaka's opponents, given his heya, so I wont. Instead I'll just say enough so that you know what I'm getting at ;-)
Jakusotsu Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Day 10 was "flinging out the garbage" day: it began with Nada against Hokutoriki - priceless, a clear winner! ;-) Ama against Dejima was a valiant effort as well, while Aminishiki did only go halfway through. Tokitenku on the other hand got it all wrong... :-(
Asashosakari Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Maybe we'll get lucky and Tosayutaka won't write a book alleging bout fixing... "Tying Itai's speed promotion record the yaocho way - Tosayutaka memoirs"? ;-) (Hey, how else could he have won 23 in a row...)
Asojima Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 ...and not the first Tsutaezori by Satoyama! I just recently dug up this gem to spice up my Bench Sumo comments for Nakabi. and for some details on what he is doing, here is slo-mo of a failed attempt in Nagoya 07.
Washuyama Posted November 20, 2007 Author Posted November 20, 2007 Just realized I'm a Juryo member.. I guess that makes me a virtual sekitori!! I'll start making tegata this weekend. (Sign of approval...) (Jumping in ecstasy...)
Asashosakari Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Since I can't think of a better thread to mention this in... The webstream camera guy apparently found it interesting to focus on the public address gyoji while they were trying to figure out what the heck Satoyama's kimarite was. If anyone's interested, this clip runs from the Satoyama-Tochinohana bout all the way through the next bout until the eventual kimarite announcement (approx. 6 minutes total). And as an epilogue, the corrected decision 15 minutes later. The guy on the left seems quite happy that that's over. (Jumping in ecstasy...)
ilovesumo Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 I think she had been there before. (Applauding...)
Washuyama Posted November 24, 2007 Author Posted November 24, 2007 Seems we all missed Sakaizawa losing and Ichihara winning on day 14 to leave both at 12-2. Even Juryo is exciting this basho!!

Even Juryo is exciting this basho!! i did not miss it sakaizawa lost without a chance for him....could not save himself in a lastmoment effort.... we might see another sakaizawa - ichihara encounter on senshuraku
Bealzbob Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 Well they've both been given some tasty opponents for day 15. Katayama and Hoshihikari will not be pushovers at that level at all. You've gotta fancy Ichihara to yusho now, although his is the more difficult day 15 opponent. It is exciting (Sign of approval...)
Bealzbob Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 (edited) While wandering around the halls of my permanent home that is Doitsuyama's database, I couldn't help noticing the remarkably similar rise through the divisions that both Kotoshogiku & Toyonoshima had. They both debuted in Haru '02 and, save for a few basho, practically climbed the banzuke side by side at an identical rate, fighting each other in every division except sandanme (despite both being in sandanme in Nagoya & Aki '02). The geeku got into makushita 2 basho earlier but spent 10 basho there to Toyo's 7 thus debuting in juryo 1 basho after Toyo. I wonder, surely they must be best of friends off the dohyo having practically shared careers and been side by side for most of what they've gone through to this point ? You can go on a dig through Toyonoshima's blog and find several telling entries and images . . . Edited November 25, 2007 by kaiguma
yamaneko Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 very unfulfilling bout between sakaizawa and ichihara.
