The new Asashouryuu magic return date being mentioned is November 30th, and he intends to join the Winter jungyo. His personal manager arrived in Mongolia a few days ago with three mawashis and some judo gear. Asa has started keiko two days ago, and is said to have been running in the mountains for two hours in the morning. Then, in the afternoon, he did some Mongolian Sumo with his brother Sumiyabazar, who was wearing judo gear. They practiced throws and tachiais. This went on for 3-4 hours.

An official itinerary will be announced at a press conference after the manager, who returned to Japan today, will discuss it with Takasago Oyakata. It is almost certain he will be on the November 30th direct flight to Japan.

A second version:

Matsunami Kenshirou, the Deputy Minister of Education Etc.. has said he has spoken by phone with Asashouryuu, and he intends to return on November 23rd via Seoul. This means he will be arriving before the basho ends on the 25th. He will go straight to Kyushu and will apologize at the YDC meeting on the 26th , no less.

He will also be visiting the Education etc. Ministry offices. (???) He will be visiting the deceased ex-Sadogatake's grave as well.

OTOH, Takasago Oyakata has been maintaining that he will not arrive during the basho so as not to undermine the other rikishi's gambarizing during the basho by stealing the limelight.

I'm sticking to the first virgin. It doesn't seem possible that he will return in mid-basho, or visit the ministry, or apologize at the YDC meeting.

I wonder how, after all this time, an apology of any kind would go down? Especially if given in conjuction with a return to Japan and as a part of 'making the rounds.' He would seem to be saying, "I will do what's expected of me, but only in my own good time and when it's convenient for me."

The time for a credible apology is long gone...but he'll have to make one anyway.

Right. Making the apology will only avert the negative consequences of not apologizing; it probably won't have much of an additional positive effect unlike in e.g. Roho's case after the photographer incident. Unless he really goes grovelling, but that's quite unlikely now and I'm not sure anyone would be buying it anyway...

And now, virgin three:

Asashouryuu will be returning on the 26th. He will immediately go to the YDC meeting and apologize there. After that, a press conference for the people. "No way he returns and things will happen while he's serving his sentence. It's better he return after the basho.. The 26th ( the day after the end of the basho) is a good target date. He should come out to the fans and apologize for causing all this trouble.", explained Kitanoumi Rijicho.

Don't know what all the big fuss over virgins is. If I switch from English teaching to the martyr game I don't want 20 of them waiting for me! Could you imagine the grief!! No give me 20 experienced dirty-minded sluts anyday.

I couldn't agree more!!! (I am not worthy...)

Was it not your countryman who wrote "I like men who have a future, and women who have a past"? (I am not worthy...)

Both are very hard to come by. Most of the time it's the other way round. (Holiday feeling...)

Enter a new problem. Asa or someone around him forgot to renew his working visa. It appears that it expired on September 2nd. The Kyokai has hurriedly sent documents to Mongolia yesterday to be signed by Asa. If mitigating circumstances will not be acknowledged, there is no way he will participate in the winter jungyo, and that Hatsu basho return may be at risk as well.

Usually, a month before the expiry of a visa, a renewal request is made, but that time came right in the middle of Asa's confinement at his Tokyo home and all the balagan that accompanied it, so someone must have totally forgot about it.. So now , Asa will have to apply for the renewal at the Japanese Embassy. This type of visa usually takes two months to process, but if there are mitigating circumstances it can take only a week or so. Because Asa is a famous person, there is a good chance he will be treated favorably. In case it doesn't , though, the Hatsu basho participation will be questionable. He can get a temporary visa to return to Japan, but not a working visa. "If, again, he won't be able to participate in the jungyo because of personal reasons, he should quit sumo! What a stupid thing!!", raged Ooshima Oyakata. Till now, Asa himself and his personal manager were in charge of renewing the visa. "If he won't be ready in time for the jungyo, it's his neck!!", agreed Takasago Oyakata.

He can still be returning later than planned (November 26th), but if he misses the jungyo because of this oversight, and that would be the reason for his career coming to an end, it would really be tragic and funny but not ha ha funny etc..

You wonder whether the sumo association can become any more ridiculous. They even talk about forcing Asashoryu to retire, if he can't get his work visa in time. Instead of picking up a phone and asking the Japanese foreign ministry to speed up procedures -- in the vital interest of Japan's national sport.

I this and the previous basho have shown anything, it is: sumo god damn needs Asashoryu. Much more than Asashoryu needs sumo. Dull Hakuho runs away with every yusho, and no other serious competitor is in sight.

The JSA is eagerly cutting off the branch on which it is sitting.

Thinking about it, the fact that a Yokozuna is being given a work visa with an expiration date is ridiculous enough. Trying to force him out of sumo because he forgot to renew this visa is not only ridiculous, it's shameless.

Just out of curiosity - did you also consider this a problem when Asashoryu was doing the same thing for three years?

Asashoryu's dominance didn't do sumo very well. Hence I thought it was a good thing when Hakuho rose through the ranks and just appeared to be establishing a serious rivalry.

This said, Asashoryu is the more interesting character than Hakuho. Sumo dominated by Hakuho will be even duller than sumo dominated by Asashoryu.

Thinking about that statement, I like my sumo being dull.

As I wrote a long time ago, to be a good manager requires much more than having been a yokozuna and/or the chief of a beya....

AFAIK, all work related visas are for a specified period of time - typically 1 or 3 years. Those who have taken a marriage visa also have a limited term, but have fewer hassles renewing. A permanent resident permit would be best for Asa, as there is no need to renew.

IIRC, 10 years continuous residency is the basic standard for PR. It can be much faster if you marry a Japanese national (I've heard of 3 or 5 years in such a case). Gainful employment would seem to be covered for Asa, though lately that's less of a given.

Hakuho is not only dull, he has no shame to use henka, and he is the YOKOZUNA! This guy should take the Yusho 15:0, considering the lame competition. What is wrong with him?

Now he will take the Yusho with 12:3? This is a joke, how long are the fans willing to pay for this? Come on, even Japanese are not that stupid.

Asashoryu`s dominance didn`t do sumo very well? What is a Yokozuna supposed to do? To win, or am I getting something wrong here? And with style, and Asashoryu did this. I was never bored with Asashoryu and I hope he comes back and kicks some ass in January. (Sign of approval...)
