Ex-Komusubi Chiyotenzan did not show up for his bout today. He was 1-4 at the bottom of Makushita. It feels like the end for him as well as it is for Takanowaka. I wonder - any of them eligible for babu, and if so, do they actually have anything in hand?

I'm not close to the centre of things like some of the others on this forum but I've been under the impression that these guys wouldn't make particularly good oyakata.

They both got right up to sanyaku without much trouble and then proceeded to more or less suck ever since. It could be injuries or general health issues, I wouldn't know, but I've felt more sympathetic towards rikishi such as Tochisakae or Hayateumi with regards to excuses for not meeting expectations brought on by initial impressions.

In short, I have not been impressed. How are these guys to inspire anyone? I'd prefer to see someone like Sumanofuji go on to inspire future rikishi. He just wasn't good enough to remain a sekitori for long but he fought hard to keep getting back up there. I also liked Takanotsuru. He couldn't last in the big leagues either but the reasons were well understood and you felt for the guy as he tried to keep it going. I just don't get that feeling from these two former sanyaku.

I can't speak for Chiyotenzan but Takanowaka suffered a terrible knee injury on the dohyo and did well to stay long in juryo never mind returning to makuuchi on a number of occassions. He was faulted by more knowledgable people than I for not showing great fighting spirit on his way to sekiwake but it takes guts to keep doing sumo at the level required to stay in juryo and get up to makuuchi.

Just look at Kaiho. He had a horrible injury (against Wakanosato?) 3 years ago and it has taken him this long to get back to makuuchi. He's not doing so well this basho out but he's done very well.

His opponent was Iwakiyama, and I still have the image of the breaking ankle in front of my eyes ( I still feel a cold shower over my back only thinking of that one )

Concerning the topic: I don't think that their actions on the dohyo implicate how good they might be as an oyakata.

A sumotori who couldn't get everything out of his body (even if he was a huge talent like Takanowaka) can still be able to teach the young guns the fundamentals, might motivate them to always give their best and can have a sense for scouting newcomers.

But generally it's a bad timing to retire in these days with only two vacant kabus available and probably neither of them going to Tenzan or Waka.

Another candidate is Buyuzan.

At the moment he is Makushita 26 and today he lost and is 2-4. B-)

Now he will fall down to the deeper ranks in Makushita.

I know, he was injured, but will he come back?

Hmm, you're right. This whole scenario would end in a three way kabu dance.

And I just noticed that Tochisakae is already 2-4 as well. But he has the best chances to stay with the Kyokai right now, because one of the vacant kabus belongs to Tochinonada anf he'll surely loan it to his heyamate, if Sakae's going to retire.

I think you're right. Kumagatani Oyakata never made it past the Maegashira 13 rank, but he raised Hakuho from a skinny teenager to a yokozuna. He is also very articulate during the NHK broadcasts, a real gentleman in person, and well-respected in the kyokai.

Well said. He likes to recall the time he beat Konishiki.

Didn't Chiyotenzans problems start after he was accused of shooting a young rikishi with an air rifle at his Heya?

I didn't know he beat Konishiki. I'd love to see the video if it's available somewhere. Or maybe you could recount the story...?

Edit: This is definitely off topic by now. Maybe a new thread?

Was it not Asashoryu who was using an air rifle??

Edit: It was, allegedly, Chiyotenzan who had an air rifle shooting habit.

Not before losing today though. I wonder if he would have kept on had he won, or if he decided he just wanted to fight one more time regardless of the result.

I'm very disappointed! He was the very first sekitori I saw in the flesh (august 2003).

Chiyotenzan announced his intai the 12th on his blog.

It was just announced on NHK that he has retired. He will leave sumo completely.

Interesting that he's leaving sumo altogether. I assumed that, since he was hanging on so long after falling from the sekitori ranks, that he must have been waiting for an oyakata opening.

maybe he was intending to stay in sumo but the options did not pan out for him? No openings, or perhaps his body couldn;t hold out long enough for that opening to be realised, or perhaps a better offer/option came up in the meantime?
