Itachi Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 (edited) Hey Folks, I have almost finished setting up the selection tables for the Jo-Game. Check the previous thread for details about how the game is to go. I'll prepare a more complete invitation once I get the time. I've pasted in my initial proposal for this game and I've posted tables that divide the rikishi into 7 groups. To play, select one rikishi from each group and mail the list to me with your shikona. My email address is nmatsuo@hsaw.ca I realize that the Heya for each rikishi doesn't appear in the tables I posted. I may fix that later but I think most potential players will have their own source of information to draw on. Please humour me and give this a try so I can do a proper test of my result compiling machine. There are only 7 choices to make and the target audience for this game is already selecting 3 or more Jo-division rikishi when they play the Heya Game, PTYW, and Banzuke Surfing so this is just taking things a wee bit further to focus on the nether regions of the banzuke. Itachi Posted August 31, 2007 Author Posted August 31, 2007 Here is a proposal for a Jonidan/Jonokuchi game. (I wrote most of this just after the Natsu basho and I have revised my ideas several times since then) I can't see much point to having a full Jonokuchi game and so the Jo-Game will incorporate both Jonidan and Jonokuchi. Jonidan is the largest division. Jonidan is the division with most of the weakest rikishi. Jonokuchi rikishi are either new or about to give up or about to move on to higher ranks. No one lingers long in that division (with notable exceptions as per the Persistence Watch). The Jonidan division is the lowest division with 'permenant residents'. Ichinoya is a prime example as is Kasachikara. This makes the division interesting to me. Many of us take notice of Jonidan rikishi only when they are passing through quickly on their way to meet our higher expectations of them. Aran is an example. Most of us lower division fans are keenly watching his one and only expected Jonidan basho with great interest. Occasionally, a rikishi who has established himself in a higher division will fall to this level due to injuries and then launch a comeback from here. Then, some of us will take notice. Otherwise, there is little reason to pay attention to this massive group of rikishi - many of whom, most of whom have no real expectation of becoming sekitori (or even makushita). This game is designed to separate the type of Jonidan rikishi who already attract our interest from those who normally would not and allow us to evaluate each within their 'peer group'. I've determined 7 groups of rikishi between the two lowest divisions based not solely on banzuke rank but also on their apparent trajectory through the banzuke (albeit determined only by the previous basho record and rank). The groups I propose are as follows: Jonidan section: group 1: Demoted from Sandanme to Jonidan group 2: Still in Jonidan with 5 wins or more group 3: Still in Jonidan with 4 wins (this is a large group!) group 4: Still in Jonidan with makekoshi (this group is the largest) group 5: Advancing to Jonidan from Jonokuchi Jonokuchi section: group 6: Stuck in Jonokuchi (includes those demoted from Jonidan) group 7: New to Jonokuchi (includes returnees from banzuke-gai status) I propose we each select one rikishi from each of the 7 groups I've identified. The scoring will be simple, based on raw wins, kachikoshi's, and best in group scores with a bonus equal to your best scoring rikishi's win total. I'll adjust everyone's score so that the best possible score for each tournament will be equivalent to a 7-0 record similar to what I do in the Sandanme Game except that our scores will be out of 7 rather than 15 (this is the lowest division game around after all - we should only have 7 bouts). As with the Sandanme Game, I'll create drones for most popular and best possible player. Best previous will be difficult as the groups are based in part on previous records but I could go to the basho before last to fill Mukashi's entry with appropriate selections. The third drone will be a work in progress. The premise for Mukashi was to identify the picks of a simple default strategy - what would be the default criteria for selecting rikishi once best prior record is eliminated? As for the groups, I figure most of us who will want to play will also play PTYW as well as Fay's Heya Game. In this case, we will already have a choice for at least one rikishi in each of Jonokuchi and Jonidan. For the Heya Game, we select two Jonidan rikishi. Probably all of these will be duplicated here but there will be at least 4 rikishi to pick who would not have been considered for any other game. I know there are lower division fans out there who like to follow the sometimes unremarkable careers of these rikishi so now there is a game where you can give them a chance to succeed for you. Feel free to comment, criticize, ridicule, or ignore but above all, feel free to send your entry (you only have 7 rikishi to select and it's multiple choice format!) The next post will contain the selection groups. To enter the game, send me an email with your Shikona and the rikishi you want from each of the seven groups. Using the same shikona spelling will assist me in feeding your entry into the machine.

Itachi Posted September 4, 2007 Author Posted September 4, 2007 (edited) Mukashi's Selection For Aki 2007 Group 1: Demoted to Jonidan from Sandanme Yamakashira Group 2: Stayed in Jonidan with 5 or more wins Kawanari Group 3: Stayed in Jonidan with 4 wins Matsumoto Group 4: Stayed in Jonidan with a makekoshi record Ebashi Group 5: Promoted to Jonidan Tokitsukasa Group 6: Remained in or returned to Jonokuchi Tamakazan Group 7: New or returning to banzuke in Jonokuchi Hakiai Here are Mukashi's picks for this first test of the Jonidan Game. Mukashi picked the rikishi with the best result in the last tournament (or tournaments in the event of a tie as is inevitable due to the definition of some of these groups).Genzai's picks will be known once all the human player picks are in. We have 6 people in the game so far but I'm hoping for more. I know that several lower division gaming fans wait until the kyujo announcements come out before sending their Sandanme Game picks so if any of those fine folks are interested in this game, I won't hear about it until the final day.On the encouraging side, I received one entry from a familiar shikona who had not been playing the Sandanme Game. Who would play the Jo-Game and not the Sandanme Game? Well this player sent me a Sandanme entry a while later so perhaps the answer is, no one would. So far there are just two groups where no riksihi has been picked by more than one player and there aren't any groups where everyone takes the same rikishi.Come on in and join the fun. Only 7 rikishi to select and the choices are presented in the tables posted above. Edited September 4, 2007 by Itachi
Itachi Posted September 8, 2007 Author Posted September 8, 2007 The lower division kyujo list has been announced and some of you have selected kyujo rikishi. I will replace them as previously specified. If you have made no alternate selection, then I will assume you will be content with Mukashi's decision. In group 1, Profomisakari had Kyokuyuzan replaced by Yamakashira. In group 4, Ganzohnesushi had selected a replacement for Shinzan. Azumaryu and Mukashi both had Ebashi but with Ebashi's kyujo, they will go with Mukashi's next choice, Onoyama. In group 6, Ganzohnesushi had selected an alternate for Shogo. Holleshoryu had Suzuki and now has Mukashi's pick, Tamakazan. If any of you wish to change your replacement rikishi or if you want to keep the kyujo one and hope for a return, you may do so by reaching me with an email before the rikishi involved are scheduled to appear on the dohyo. nmatsuo@shaw.ca
Itachi Posted September 9, 2007 Author Posted September 9, 2007 Wow! I hadn't expected this many of you to play this on the first test. Thanks to all who entered. I haven't had a chance to process all your entries yet but I did a quick kyujo check and everyone seems to be ok there. We have 15 people and 3 drones participating in the first basho of this game. I'm calling it a beta-test because I haven't gone through the process of grabbing, sorting, compiling, and presenting results for this game yet and there will be a few extra steps involved as the groups are not in banzuke order. Ideally I would like to present results daily but we'll see what I can manage. I haven't sent confirmation emails to those who sent their picks in over the last couple of days so here is a list of the entries I have received. If you think you sent one and your shikona is not on the list, please let me know. If you ran out of time and still want to play as a maezumo entry, go ahead - I'll track your results but you will remain out of contention for the yusho. Here are the players for the inaugural tournament (roughly in order of receipt) Itachi Fay Profomisakari Holleshoryu Azumaryu Imumaru Fatakiyama Ganzohnesushi Kintamayama Randomitsuki Vikanohara Neko Tamanaogijima Doitsuyama Asashosakari drone Mukashi has announced it's picks (see above) drone Genzai has yet to be announced drone Mirai will reveal its picks at the conclusion of the tournament Good luck everyone and many thanks for helping me extend sumogaming to the end of the banzuke (ground broken by PYTW and the Heya-Game).

I haven't adjusted the formula column I cut from the Sandanme Game so Mirai is getting 15 rikishi counted. The leading human player is Itachi, also with only one loss so far (It's Hakiai).Imumaru, Vikanohara, and Holleshoryu are also doing well - only 2 losses overall and they are all projecting to finish over 6.0 wins.Mukashi improved with a 4-1 night on day 5 but is still makekoshi. As you can see, it is possible to have 7 undefeated rikishi still.Itachi, Imumaru, Holleshoryu, and Genzai - yes, Genzai - are tied for the lead with just 3 losses so far. Good picking everyone!Even Mukashi, in last place, has more wins than losses.
Itachi Posted September 15, 2007 Author Posted September 15, 2007 (edited) Hey, Mirai lost a bout already! This means that for one of the groups, no rikishi remains undefeated. Actually, no, in this case it means that I haven't set up the columns for Mirai properly. I believe every group still has undefeated rikishi. I'm rather interested how you come up with the number of wins for Mirai. ;-) Do you really want to know? Well, I built the Jo-Game machine from a copy of the Sandanme Game one. I adjusted all the player column formulae to fit the new group breaks. I was quite busy during the pre-basho preparation rush and I forgot to fix up Mirai's columns (after all, it doesn't know which rikishi it picked until the results come in). As a result, Mirai's totals continued to be collected from 15 groups made from the first 200 rikishi on the list. Many of these 15 groups included 3 win rikishi and so Mirai's total wins came to ... what was it, 37 on day 5? I've now adjusted things so that Mirai knows where the group boundaries are and so there are only 7 results going towards Mirai's score now. In fact, Mirai did manage to find 21 wins and thus has a perfect record so far this tournament (not counting results just in from earlier tonight). Edited September 15, 2007 by Itachi

Fay and Vikanohara are the other players who selected the Korean over the former Makushita Tsukedashi. Well, Mirai will undoubtably select Kinryuzan as well.Mukashi has dropped below the kachikoshi line.

Vikanohara Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 (edited) Will be triple interesting to see what day 9 will bring. As in Sumo Game AND in Higashi ou Nishi I'll be competing against Holleshoryu as well. (Showing respect...) Edited September 16, 2007 by Vikanohara

I would have thought Holleshoryu would maintain his overall lead but in fact Genzai's one additional kk seems to carry more weight than Holleshoryu's superior win/loss ratio. It is Genzai in the lead (since Mirai is ineligible to win) and Holleshoryu close behind.I think Genzai and Mukashi should be eligible to win the yusho but in this case, I would give special recognition to the jun-yusho player.Mukashi is solidly in last place but has a winning record overall. Kintamayama Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 I don't pretend to even begin to understand the scoring system, but even I can see that Fatakiyama and I have the exact same record, yet our overall score is different. Is that possible, or am I missing the point?

Is that possible, or am I missing the point? Ah, there we go - there really is something wrong with those columns in the big worksheet. I'll do some exploratory surgery when I get a chance. Thanks for pointing that out.

Asashosakari Posted September 20, 2007 Posted September 20, 2007 I hate to sound like a broken record, but are there unreplaced kyujo rikishi in play here, too? Holleshoryu and Ganzohnesushi have fallen behind by exactly one bout every two days, indicating that one of their picks has been AWOL since shonichi...
