James H Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 This is not really banzuke related, but occured to me as I read it.... As Asashoryu is returning champion, he should return all the stuff - the flag and the Cups and so on. Who is going to do it this time? Takasago? Ichinoya? A tsukebito? I assume there is no precedent for the current champion to be suspended and thus not be able to return all the gubbins...
Tony Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 I think it will be Takasago oyakata. Indeed, when Chiyonofuji dislocated his left shoulder against Onokuni in march 1989 and won the yusho, he was kyujo for natsu basho. So, Kokonoe oyakata 12th replaced his deshi and gave back the Emperor's cup to the rijicho on the shonichi.
ilovesumo Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 Same rule for the Yusho portrait presentation in front of the Kokugikan on Saturday before Shonichi? The handshake of winners....
kaiguma Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 Same rule for the Yusho portrait presentation in front of the Kokugikan on Saturday before Shonichi? The handshake of winners.... I imagine they'll can that one! :-P

Problem is, what happens if Takasago-oyakata goes intai before then?
Doitsuyama Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 Problem is, what happens if Takasago-oyakata goes intai before then? Unless the heya gets disbanded there will immediately be a new Takasago oyakata, so no problem here.
Kintamayama Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Official now-Takasago Oyakata will return all the yusho paraphernalia. It will be the first time he steps on a honbasho dohyo since his intai in 1989. He will also stand in for Asa at the yusho portrait thingy.
Bishonohana Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Great question! I was also wondering what the protocal was in returning the cup, flag, etc..... Thank you for the enlightenment!
Kintamayama Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 (edited) Takasago did the portrait thing today. He was a bit nervous but "Hakuhou went first, so I saw the process and copied it, so that helped..', he said. There were about 30 people from the press and another 100 people watching in the courtyard. Then a cool word play I noticed Jabba. The word 額 means "framed picture" and also "forehead ". The article used it, intending to mean he was sweating from his forehead, but the double meaning ("sweating from the framed picture" ) was not missed on me, sir. Edit add-on:Asa now has 21 of the 32 portraits that are currently hanging - one more than Chiyonofuji ever had at one time, breaking the record. Now, a short quiz: When was the last time an Oyakata stood in for his rikishi for the portrait ceremony? No Japanese reading ability person may apply. Edited September 8, 2007 by Kintamayama
Otokonoyama Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 Now, a short quiz: When was the last time an Oyakata stood in for his rikishi for the portrait ceremony? No Japanese reading ability person may apply. How about one who reads Japanese very poorly? IIRC I read somewhere on this forum that Kitanofuji returned the portait for Chiyonofuji once when he went kyujo...

Otokonoyama Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 Then it would have to be Futagoyama when Takanohana went kyujo after blowing his knee out in the whole Musashimaru ketteisen deal...

Asashosakari Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 (edited) I was gonna guess Azumazeki for Akebono's last yusho...hmm, time to babelfish the article now. :-O Edit: Nope, that was wrong, too. Edited September 8, 2007 by Asashosakari
Jonosuke Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 (edited) Since I don't qualify to answer Moti's question I go to a different direction (Hint: it did not happen a long ago). I guess it's interesting to hear all the Asashoryu fans saying how uninteresting this basho is going to be. I came to a conclusion for some time now that Asashoryu chasers only see things in one way. Without him Sumo does not exist. I have yet come across one balanced view from them. The whole world is conspiring against them. No wonder one gets in a severe depression when one is surrounded by such folks. Anyway for the rest of Ozumo fans, things are never that bleak as the Kyokai announced the Aki basho tickets have been really selling well despite the negative publicity. The weekend prime Masu seats have all sold out and only a few good Masu seats remain unsold on those days. Sumo is never one personality cult for those who have been coming to see sumo live and following it for years. After all it has been doing so for far longer than we've ever been around. Sumo lives on. Sumo rocks. Edited September 8, 2007 by Jonosuke

Hey, I'm an Asa fan, (pretty sure more than some of the other "fans" mouthing off here..), and I think my view is quite balanced, so count one fan who is eagerly awaiting his return, yet as eagerly waiting for this basho to start, hoping for a surprise yusho from left field..
Kintamayama Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 Answer to quiz- Hatsu 2003 (the same basho Takanohana retired)- Musashigawa filling in for Musashimaru.
Peterao Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 Answer to quiz- Hatsu 2003 (the same basho Takanohana retired)- Musashigawa filling in for Musashimaru. The followup trivia is that Wakanohana is the last yokozuna to retire without once having his oyakata fill in for him in the cup handover ceremony.

My apology. Come to think of it, I am as much of Asshoryu fan as you are. For somone advocating the miracle of balance, I accept I am guilty as charged. It's good to hear he is now smiling. I hear smiling makes the world go around.
Kintamayama Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 I seem to remember a discussion about this again after the retirement but can't find it, so I'm entering the answer for March 2010 here:

Kintamayama Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 (edited) Am I the only one who thought it looked as if he might fall while trying to carry that thing onto the dohyo? He was complaining to anyone willing to listen that it was really heavy. Edited March 15, 2010 by Kintamayama
