There are some cases when at the start of the next bout the kimarite is revised after being announced. I enjoy that..

Fair enough, but I'll be shocked if it's ever happened for a hikiotoshi.

IIRC, it usually happens when a more "complicated" kimarite replaces a "simpler" one, as in Okuritsuriotoshi replacing a yorikiri or something..

i think he was just sweating profusely.

This should lock up ozeki for him now. This answers the previous threads of who is the next ozeki. Im happy its japanese, last japanese to be promoted to ozeki is retired already, right?

I wonder who is next.

I truly hope Kotomitsuki gets promoted to Ozeki, but according the Japanese news papers, they think he will need at least 12 wins for a sure promotion. I think Kotomitsuki has been one of the most consistant Sanyaku rikishi for a long time. I'm sure that out of the 3 remaining he will win more than 1 more.

Asashoryu beats hakuho and loses to Mickey in a playoff. ;-)

Nice idea...or Hakuho beats Asa and loses to Mickey again (In a state of confusion...)

Some of the online ones have already crowned him. So have I. Hail the new Ozeki, and if there is a "deserve" in sumo, he is a deserved deservant indeed.

I don't accept corrections from the "enemy"!

And I really don't know what I mean most of the time...

Well after today there is no doubt about the matter. Congratulations Kotomitsuki, soon to be Kotozakura!

Better late than never!

No reason why he shouldn't shoot for yokozuna now...

Truly!

(Showing respect...) (Clapping wildly...) (Showing respect...) (Clapping wildly...) (On the banzuke...) :-D

I know I should quickly do a search of what wiser people have said, but I think this would make Mickey one of the oldest rikishi ever to make ozeki. If he can break one record, why not another? :)

Although stringing together two yusho to get to big kahuna status ... difficult is an epic understatement.

Can't let up now, GO GO GO MICKEY! Two more days of good sumo to go!

Just curious. Why would Kotomitsuki change his shikona to Kotozakura ?

Anyhoo, congrats to him. SURELY now it's gonna happen.

Hm, would a "Road to 100 Yusho" thread for Mickey still be over the top now? (Whistling...)

Hopefully, his promotion will stir some interest for Sumo in Japan again...

I think I'm going to start a "Road to 100 'Road to 100 Yusho' threads" thread if you do that. (Whistling...)

Edit: Somebody should do a retroactive "Road to 100 'Future Ozeki'" project sometime. I bet we're up to about 40 or 50 for Heisei already. Good for Mickey that he is indeed making it out of the "future Ozeki" list, at last.

Its quite surprising how things can change over 4 months.

Just see this thread in question where practically everyone didn't give Mickey any chance at making Ozeki.. . . except yours truly.

I was under the impression this name was being saved for Kotooshu when he became yokozuna. Looks like even sadogatake have given up hope of that ever happening.

Where's the problem? Mickey will long be retired when Kotooshu makes it, so he can use the shikona too.

Besaides that, Hell will have frozen over.

I had to go to an early morning meeting and missed all the bouts!

Great win for Mickey. I couldn't care less what name he fights under as long as he can keep this level of performance up. It's fantastic to have a new Ozeki and I'm delighted he climbed his own mental barrier too.

It will be a great weekend of sumo.

You said "Don't count him out just yet", which isn't exactly a forceful statement. OTOH, Peterao- "I will go on record and say that Kotomitsuki will become ozeki within the next six basho."- now, THAT's a statement.

And me?

"Ones who will never become Ozeki. Ever:

1. Kisenosato

2. Kotomitsuki"

I should go crawl under something.

His fans always believed that it was possible.

Most of the others found almost the idea ridiculous.

We agree all today.

Good conclusion. (Applauding...)

Now kotooshu will have to start facing two sekiwake for the first time in a long time.

I was thinking the same thing actually, but since - at least for the time being - the sekiwake won't be what they used to be, it's probably a wash for now...lucky for him.

But he won't be facing one of the Ozekis. Somehow, the disadvantage that he would suffer escapes me. He still faces and evades the same people regardless of what rank they hold.

hmm curious, I cant find any mention of the unnecessary and forceful late shove to Homashos chest at the end of yesterdays bout. Double standards perhaps? the anti - Asa brigade would have surely been posting, admonishing him if it were Asa doing the late shoves....

If anything it should have been the other way around Kotomitsuki was dicking around at the tachai and then got an advantageous start over Homasho, I thought it was poor form myself (the dicking around especially)
