Jonosuke Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 (edited) New Juryo promotion: Former Nichidai sumo club star, Sakaizawa, superb Hoshihikari from Mongolia and Kitanoumi beya's Kitataiki. Returnees are: Makushita Yusho winner Wakakirin and former amateur great Takamifuji. So no Ichihara. Edited May 30, 2007 by Jonosuke
Kaikitsune Makoto Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 Who is this Kitataiki really? 24 years of age so young, born in Tokyo, speaks good Japanese and has been at high makushita many times but still I can't even remember his sumo style which is unusual as sumo style is what I remember if anything. Can't recall his name coming up much on forum discussions either. Kind of under the radar flying rikishi. BTW, Kitanoumi-beya sure had joyful basho with Kitazakura and Hakurozan getting back to makuuchi and Kitataiki making his juryo debut.
Andreas Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 Yeah, now that Kitataiki got promoted all the Kitanoumi sekitori together might have more hair than their oyakata ;) (but maybe Kitanoumi oyakata is wearing a wig, who knows?)
Jakusotsu Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 (but maybe Kitanoumi oyakata is wearing a wig, who knows?) A bigwig, of course! (I am not worthy...) (sorry, couldn't resist...)
ilovesumo Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 (edited) Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Hoshihikari!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a day! Edited May 30, 2007 by ilovesumo
Leonishiki Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 So, if five guys are going up to Juryo, we need five demotions. Let's see... One spot is because Tochiazuma's intai, other three spots are for Chiyohakuho, Takanowaka and Tochisakae. And how about the last one? Bushuyama? And how about Kobo? It seems that he can be the luckiest guy in the world if he finally avoid the demotion. Or maybe Kobo is going to be demoted to Makushita and perhaps Tochisakae or Takanowaka will fill the last spot in Juryo. (I am not worthy...)
Doitsuyama Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 It could also be Chiyohakuho who is getting lucky. Bushuyama I think is certainly going down as Kobo is higher with the same score.
aderechelsea Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 5 more pints of Fischer please !!!!!! Hoshihikari is a SEKITORI !!!!! :-) this is more than a "parent's" fragile heart can withstand.... i am ecstatic!!!!! B-)
Bealzbob Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 Can someone give me a brief synopsis of why Hoshihikari is so well loved? It seems he's getting more than the usual amount of 'love' from the posters and I'm interested in why :-) I don't want to miss out on something (I am not worthy...)

It seems he's getting more than the usual amount of 'love' from the posters and I'm interested in why :-) I don't want to miss out on something (I am not worthy...) He's the lightest sekitori now - with 106.2 kg more than 12 kg lighter than Hakuba and Satoyama. As much as you possibly want to see 200+ kg sekitori, other consumers are thrilled with the prospect of seeing technical proficiency in the paid ranks. Incidentally, the last sekitori lighter than Hoshihikari was Furuichi with 101 kg when he had a 4-11 at J12e in Kyushu 2002.

Spot-checking a few candidates, you have Ama at 113 kg for his shin-juryo basho, and Aminishiki at 113.5 for his second Juryo basho (108 kg the year before). That's not very much, but still more than Furuichi and now Hoshihikari...any chance you can easily look up the most recent successful sekitori debutant at close to 100 kg?
Bealzbob Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 I've gone back through every juryo debutant until Furuichi and the 3 below are the only ones that stand out weight-wise. Asofuji Aki '03 5-10 @ ~111kg Satoyama Hatsu '06 9-6 @ ~112kg Oga Natsu '06 10-5 @ ~115kg

That's not so easy as you might think because I update weights only once a year, normally good enough. But especially successful light sekitori debutants tend to rise quickly in their weight - which might also be the reason they break the sekitori barrier in first place. To tell the truth, going by my database Hakuho was lighter than Hoshihikari at 101.5 kg in his juryo debut Hatsu 2004, but in Haru 2004 his listed weight was 135 kg - certainly Hakuho was closer to that in Hatsu 2004 already, so he doesn't really count. To some degree it's the same with Asashoryu who my database lists at 106 kg in Haru 2000, and at 128 kg in Haru 2001. At his juryo debut in Aki 2000 he probably already was heavier than 115 kg. Other than that the list of sekitori lighter than Hoshihikari (successful or not) for whole Heisei era is pretty short; and probably already too big as I don't have weights yet for 1989 and 1990, so the 1988 weights stretch until 1991, so I listed the 1991 weights in questionable cases: Ishinriki (84 kg), 141-159 20 sekitori basho Mainoumi (93 kg), 53 sekitori basho Kyokudozan (95 kg), 51 sekitori basho Komidori/Furuichi (97 kg), 2 sekitori basho Fukunosato (98.5 kg), 1 sekitori basho Takanomine (102 kg), 10 sekitori basho Nishinoryu/Tsunenoyama (104 kg), 20 sekitori basho Tomonohana (juryo in 1992.11, 100 kg in 1992.05, 113 kg in 1993.05), 54 sekitori basho Wakahanada (juryo in 1990.03, 100 kg in 1988.07, 117 kg in 1991.05), 61 sekitori basho Overall the success rate doesn't seem to be overly dependent on the weight as one might think. Admittedly Komidori is the only really light juryo debutant in the last 15 years, and he didn't fare well. Time to break the curse as the new yokozuna would say. :-P

All I've ever been able to dig up on the English side is for the sekitori - any other rikishi may well not exist over there.

I respect their success much more than of those who have a natural advantage for Sumo. Kaiho falls in that category also. He was 120 kgs when he beat Musashimaru even though he weighted ~220 kilos back then .... that is also why i liked Chiyonoshima, Morioka and Azumi (all intai now) from the lower divisions. Ozeki Takanohana is also one of my all time favourites. i suppose you get the picture.

On good days he seemes to be able to move the whole world... :-P When I have seen him for the first time, last September in Keiko, he seemed to have no respect or fear and kicked 170 kilo+ guys easily out of the Ring. He seemed to be a beast...today I know that he is more a shy fellow. :-) It's forbidden to look directly at him before the bout or it is your fault when he looses :-) (Sigh...) hehe...all the best for him! Cause he is so light, he might have a hard time next Basho, fighting in Juryo, but I know that he can (and will) make a KK. Edited May 31, 2007 by ilovesumo

And from the note on that page, it appears that Kintamayama is retiring this source of information. I hope to find another that's even remotely as good (especially for relatively easily tracking down older basho records for non-sekitori).

Supermarkets are sprouting everywhere, causing the small groceries to fold and their owners to go hungry.. Sad, but true. Modernization is slowly making me work less. Actually, I can't wait ..
