http://www.sumo.or.jp/IrohaKyokaiInformation/detail?id=357 says that Arashio retired (as in gone) as of the 26th, the date the rijikai discussed it. But yeah, for some strange reason they've not bothered to update the website for any of it yet, and not in Japanese either; no intai listing for Sokokurai, and oyakata roster and duty list still show ex-Oyutaka as Arashio.  Even the linked news blurb didn't appear on the site until the 28th, IIRC.

I don't think we really have a thread for this type of news so here it goes for now:

Sewanin Torafusuyama has switched to a wakaimonogashira position, so there are 8 of those again. Apparently it's only the second known case of such a switch, the first being Kotochitose in 1991, due to the early retirement of Shishiho.

I thought perhaps the Kyokai's office staff/web team were not at work due to lockdown, but someone's managed to make the changes I reported above, so

The Kyokai site has at last caught up with Sokokurai being the new Arashio... and poor Tenkaiho has been put back where he started, at the end of the borrowers group.  However, at least for now, he still has the new assignment of sumo school + video room kimarite duty that he was given when he was briefly moved up the list.

Deepl gave me this translation: "Toyonoshima retires, assigns his name to Izutsu, but does not return as taker at age 36"

I guess "taker" is not quite right, but I can't understand the meaning...

Could somebody help me? :) Thanks in advance!

 

Also: I understand there was a vacancy after the last Izutsu oyakata's death in last September, so... Toyonoshima somehow managed to got his hands on this kabu, am I right?

36 year old without returning to sekitori status. 

2010 playoff with Hakuho was amazing basho. Really rooted for him. Great guy, wish him all the best as an oyakata. He seems to have been a good influence on young wrestlers from the TV shows that I have seen.

So, what happens now? Do the few rikishi that were in Izutsu stable return there, including yokuzuna Kakuryu I believe? Or will they remain in their new stables, and the new Izutsu oyakata has to start recruiting from zero?

Probably will remain at Tokitsukaze beya as a coach for now.

We don't know yet if he also owns it, he could have the kabu on loan - acknowledged is only that he took on the name.

Chris Gould says in his video today that Toyonoshima was making payments towards acquiring the Nishikijima kabu when it became available following his heyamate Shimotori being kicked out of sumo in 2011, but that he had to stop, presumably because of loss of salary when he fell to makushita, and that's how Asasekiryu was able to pick it up.

This is not surprising given the recent revelations that Kakuryu had shown interest in staying on board. It would make all the sense in the world for him to take on the Izutsu kabu.

If someone wants to stay on board they need to become a Japanese citizen first correct? How quickly does that process take and does it need to be done before one retires? In America I know naturalization can take a while just for all the forms and paper work but maybe that Japanese government is a bit quicker at processing than the US.

Citizenship needs to be done before retiring. The process takes (on paper, at least) 6-12 months, so it's lengthy.

If Kakuryu is intending to become an oyakata, I'm pretty sure it's only a recent decision. Izutsu's death, and his move to Michinoku seems to be lighting a coaching fire inside him.

I can definitely see Kakuryu having a different outlook on coaching now that he's in a stable that has a reasonable number of rikishi.  Even if he's just joined them, being at the highest rank and being close to the end of his active career is going to make him the go-to guy for advice other than the oyakata, from people that he barely knows for the most part, so he's at least getting much more of the experience of coaching compared to when he was half the stable.

Honestly, I wouldn't know. Their careers were before my time watching sumo. Just speculating. Maybe he just got fed up with Mushashigawa and left?

Edit: By the way, I just remember what Musashimaru once said about Kakizoe when they were both rikishi in Musashigawa-beya: "We always call him punchy, because when you see his face, you want to punch it."

I hope that wasn't a factor for his defection...

Sewanin Byakuhoyama had his final day at work today, reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65 tomorrow after 49 years in the sumo world.

With that there are now nine sewanin. I don't know if a replacement will be appointed or if the Kyokai is content to let this position fall naturally back to the old number of eight.
