Another Tokitsukaze rikishi bites the dust. The sports media are reporting that maegashira 10 Shimotori is most likely not going to be able to make the opening of Natsu Basho. Shimotori was injured during keiko in late April and was hospitalized with what was diagnosed as a recurrence of "herniated disc."

The rikishi was released from hospital on the 8th. "He will not be ready for shonichi," said Tokitsukaze Oyakata. "He may be able to participate in midstream if the pain and numbness go away."

As for his other injured deshi, Toyonoshima, the oyakata said, "We will wait until just before the Torikumi Formulation Commitee meeting to decide." Toyo had this to say: "The swelling in the ankle has been going down but I am still conscious of it and over-compensating. It's 50-50 whether I can answer the bell."

Tokitsukaze Oyakata is still fuming, but there was no way he could blame Shimotori's injury on the yokozuna.

Shimotori's drop from makuuchi was largely due to herniated disc in lumbar spine. It is very unfortunate he has aggravated the injury again. Bad burden for the frost bird. Numbness and all.

Very sad news.... I hope he can heal enough to come back for a few bouts. Him and his doctors should know if he's able to or not. Another Tokitsukaze Beya rikishi down! Wahhhh :-S
