Try JWPce. I use it all the time. It's freeware and has lots of features. For example you can set the export format for the clipboard which sounds like what you need...

'xuse me, but isn't all you need the Global IME (Japanese) from Microsoft, which you can download for free? I have it, and it appears to let me type in kana and kanji in literally all applications by flipping the little button on the task bar... ?

I use the IME (Input Method Editor) as well, downloaded from microsoft.com. I'm not a big M$ fan, but this seems to work well enough (I also use the Hebrew one without problems).

Of course the IME is good enough. But JWPce has LOADS of features which the IME doesn't have. See the export format of the clipboard as an example. Then there is a HUGH J-E dictionary. And LOTS of kanji lookup methods to search kanji/words you don't know the reading for.
