Certainly seems to be more than your average amount of xenophobia towards Japan from the Mongolian people over this. Any particular reason? I'm reluctant to ask any more controversially worded questions ;-)

the "dillution of the superior wrestling blood" that runs in Hakuho's family ?? (Shaking head...)

Yes, some Mongolians are really outraged by the fact that Hakuho intends to marry a foreign wife. In the context of current and rising racist and xenophobic hysteria in Mongolia, it is pretty natural.

I for one support Hakuho. It's better for him to marry this woman and settle in Japan. Mongolia has become a dangerous place to live with rocketing crime rate and corruption.

If this is a part of culture or custom of Mongolia, I try to understand it.

One more question:

Daiyuubu's grandfather has got better records of Mongolian Sumo than Hakuho's father. So if Daiyuubu got a wife who is not a Mongolian, people in Mongolia will go crazy?

Whomever the wife is, I'll cry though. (Neener, neener...)

Interracial marriages, intercultural marriages, international exchange (ha, ha), interaction, interconnection, connectivity between different peoples, etc... can only be a good thing. It can only lead to increased mutual understanding in the long run. It can only be a good thing.

The trend for the future in this world is to grow more connected, closer, become a tighter family.

I wish Hakuho and his new bride all the best in the future, and may god bless them.

It looks like Japan becomes even more important in his life. Not only everything he achieved in his professional career but also in private life comes from Japan. He will ask for a Japanese citizenship for sure. Anyway he has a decorous. (Neener, neener...)

Daiyuubu's grandfather used to be a coach of Hakuho's father. Daiyuubu's grandfather became champion 7 times. (Hakuho's father 6 times)

so......... Daiyuubu's family has good better blood of SUMO?

Now I am really interested how todays Ozumo mongolians are linked together through mongolian Sumo. Kinda cool to read about who's father was what a high animal (Neener, neener...)

Would you care for another long mongolian Dorj-name? Badamdorig Tuvdendorj is indeed a legend on his own in Mongolian wrestling. He won his first Naadam in 1939 at the age of 23 and manitained a good form on relatively long period of time, winning his last championship in 1954. His was also an exceptional good performer of prebout rituals. I remember seeing him in an old documentary film going into the wrestling field performing an Garuda dance and beeing in awe of his powerful grace. I wish I had this film. Besides of his 7 titles he also reached finals 2 times as well. He is a truly well regarded champion to this days among Mongols.

thank you both for your replies.

hearing the history of his grandad makes me feel, for some weird reason, more optimistic about Daiyubu's future.

Let's hope he is a late bloomer.

It might sound ridiculous to other people, but the underlying issue is the resentment among some Mongols of the fact that the boys from prominent wrestling families go abroad leaving behind the green grasses of home dohyo. Wrestling is a huge deal in Mongolia, it is an inseparable part of our culture. Litterally every Mongolian kid (well, except may be of above Flavonius dude) grows up wrestling with his peers , ripping clothes of each other and getting some from Mom's for doing it. We used to watch our wrestlers and their sons and their grandsons competing in Naadams, but now we realise that this is not going to be the same. It is nothing or very little to do with rasism or xenophobia. Aside of the traditional "unfriendly" feeilings that exists between the big and a small neighbors, you might know that Mongols, from their nature being nomadic folks, are not xenophobic at all. Everyone who enters a Ger will be treated as a welcomed guest in every corner of the Mongolian plain. I hope, Gacktoh, you are not serious by questioning the LF's remarks for "culture or custom of Mongolia", and really trying to understand, instead of to ridicule.

In mongolian wrestling the number of titles won by wrestlers is not that important as the quality of wrestling itself. The skill, the art makes someone a truly great and beloved wrestler. In this regard they are both truly great and equal champions

The wedding is off. After the negative reactions at home, Hakuhou's father has decided to step in and use his clout as father to try and convince Hakuhou to "think about it". He arrived in Tokyo today with Hakuhou's "first love", a Mongolian girl remotely related to Kyokushuuzan and a granddaughter of a former Mongolian wrestling Sekiwake. It was common belief Hakuhou would be marrying HER before he dropped the bomb on everyone.

So he's going to think about it, and in the meantime, the wedding is postponed.

After the announcement today:

By the way, what is Daiyuubu's grandfather's name? Do you know?

I've never seen his face as well.

Officially they've married... they've registered.....

OH, 1st of April.....

I wont be surprised if Hakuho's father indeed would try to convince him to change his mind. If it's just an April's fool... brilliant, Kintamayama.

Actually, after the marriage news when Hakuho's father was cornered by reporters he said "I gave his body to the world but his mind should be his own".....meaning "this is his own decision and I can do nothing about it".

Yes, I admit it was a Hakuhoax. I apologize to whoever was offended and disappointed.

I wonder if this will make Hakuho more popular with Japanese fans? It can't hurt that the rival to Asashoryu, although Mongolian himself, has a Japanese with. This might make Asa seem even more of an outsider, and Hakuho more of an insider, in the eyes of some Japanese fans.

Posted

well, foreigners can never really become insiders, and many (but not all) japanese dont like the idea of japanese women marrying foreigners (its different for men, but i guess its like that in most cultures)

In the case of really famous foreigners, like Hakuho, marrying a local woman can only add to the popularity. It's the same over here in Romania, and I think it's safe to assume it's like this everywhere else.
