That is one of the greatest sumo photographs I have ever seen. The look on Takanohana and Sumofan's faces are priceless! (In jonokuchi...)

OK, I'm getting to this topic a bit late it seems...

I've watched this bout now about 5 times, most at normal speed. I don't think we should be looking at slo-mo replays and trying to see whose part of the body hits a micro-second before the other. Miyabiyama initiated the throw and Asashoryu was trying to grab Miyabiyama as he was plummeting out, presumably to try and effect a move or to keep himself in the match as long as possible. Miyabiyama effected the move and so should be credited with the win, and no mono-ii should be asked for. This is the effect that you (at least I) get when watching at normal speed. I don't think Asa's reaction was 'I was robbed", much more likely was "I've lost two in a row!!"

Now, on whether he is injured and going kyujo etc. the only way that Asa will rack up the losses, as someone mentioned, is if he really is injured. He is out of form in my opinion, with a possible niggle or two. He does not appear grossly injured or hampered in too many ways. he was stunned today and had the better of tokitenku until the latter made a spectacular move at the edge and Asa wasn't able to finish him off. I would be disappointed if he went kyujo to protect his record. Remember, he has had a 9-6 result before as yokozuna. I doubt he will do that badly this time, and hope he doesn't pull out (and I'm not a big asa fan at all).

It would be better for sumo as a whole if he is able to stay in to the end and be just a win or two off the yusho mark. A withdrawal/single digit record would just add fuel to the yaocho fire.

Maybe it depends on the actual status of the Yokuzuna himself. When Akebono was near the end of his career he had to show, that he can still 10 wins. This was expected from him and a failure would lead to an intai.

Today everybody knows, that Asashoryu can win six basho a year and struggling with the kk/mk line is not acceptable for himself. So a kyujo is quite acceptable.

Coming back to Tochiazuma (where i have given up the hope of a promotion) he and everyone else who can become Yokuzuna should hope, that Asashoryu stays in the basho. A yusho with Asashoryu competing is much more worth than one, where he is simply the best Ozeki.

Occasionaly Asashoryu can be defeated. He's just unlucky that it happened twice in a row. I think that's that and not much more. The injury doesn't seem bad enough to account for these losses imo. I expect him to finish the basho with 12 or 13 wins and still compete for the yusho.

A yokozuna is expected to win it clearly. If he doesn't, he's gets no discount.

Kintamayama,

First, let me say that I value your contribution to all things sumo more than you will ever know.

That being said, I only have one word to disagree with your statement above:

Kotonowaka

Are there really no mono-iis for musubi-no-ichiban? What's the statistic here?

Yes, there have been mono-iis involving Asashoryu in the past, while he was the lone Yokozuna. The previously mentioned Kotonowaka incident, and there was the hair-pulling match (Kyokushuzan?) So there is no rule against it. Perhaps someone with more experience can tell us if there is an unwritten rule that says only in the most compelling circumstances will one be held after the last match of the day.

He did beat Kotonowaka cleanly...in the torinaoshi. It was because the first bout wasn't clean that they had to do it again...

Well, the Kotonowaka bout was controversial, to be sure, and many ideas were exchanged. But it doesn't change the fact that a yokozuna may be expected to win rather convincingly. Fact is that lately, Asa has been on the short end of the mono-ii stick a few times.

Kotooshu's first victory over Asashoryu was by mono-ii in Nagoya 2005, Nakabi, a little close, but Osh deserved the win. Ironically, he has reproduced several perfect copies of Asashoryu's loss that day by tsukimage. (aka dropamage)

Take it easy everyone. He's giving the field a 2 loss handicap.

How prophetic of our resident seer! Did y'all see the full house today? The excited, expectant fans? Hear the cheers, the noise, the ohs and ahs? With everyone and their dog in the running right now, it's all fun & games (Shaking head...) Azuma? Mikey?! Hakuho...? Can't count out the yokozuna yet. If anyone be fixin' bouts, the NSK's resident kuromaku whispered a little something something in Asa's ear before this basho got underway ;-)
