Jonosuke Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 On Sunday February 11 there is annual NHK Charity Sumo at the Ryogoku Kokugikan. It starts at 1 PM and is in three parts. The first part has taiko demo, Sumo Jinku singing and Makushita Yusho Rikishi Tournament. The second part has a demonstration of yokozuna putting on his tsuna (rope), kids with popular rikishis and rikishi singing with mostly female Enka singers (see this year's exception below). The third part has Makuuchi and yokozuna dohyo-iris and Makuuchi bouts. Most expensive seats are usually sold out days in advance but cheaper seats are always available even at the door in case someone still wants to check it out today. One thing I notice that is kind of interesting is one of the guest singers is BerryzKobo which is neither a singer (it's a group) nor Enka singer. They are a group of young teenage girls, not even in high school. They are popular with middle age guys feeling Morning Musume are getting too old. I guess Ozumo always needs more young female fans...or middle age male fans who come to see a young girl group.
Kintamayama Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 Forget about the sumo. Who sang what with whom and how good were they? I know Toyonoshima sang with Berry's but what else?
ilovesumo Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 For the reason of "foto's are forbidden"- in white kanji on a red background, I didn't take them. Also people were not allowed to stand in the very last row of the first floor, so we went up to the second. My highlights of today happened on the streets of Ryogoku, meeting a hero. In the Kokugikan then, before everybody seemed to get crazy cause of this girlgroup, we were allowed to listen to great jinku. For the reason that the great jinku singer Oomusashi retired, there had to be a new one. I was surprised and excited that it was Tochinoyama. A very powerful voice. (Showing respect...) But the most talented singer of them all is still Kitazakura- and he sang a great song solo afterwards too. I would have never expected him to have such a good control over his voice. Pretty. What I really couldn't understand was seeing former Minatofuji showing people their seat in the 3. last row. I was kinda shocked...and I hope those people were guests of his Heya. And we had a nice chat with a friendly japanese female in the second floor and couldn't stop laughing about the the "Miyabiyamaaaaaaaa" screams of his biggest fan. It was like a scream duell of fans "Kotomitsukiiiiiiiiiii Miyabiyama KOTOMITSUKIIIIIIIIIIIII MIYABIYAMAAAAAAAAAAAA ";-) A nice thing was, when Roho, Tochiazuma and Kotooshu had to fight little wanpaku boys, there was one blond one- he was single versus Roho- and the speaker wanted the kid, (a big fan of Roho like he said) to have a kind of interview with him. So after saying "Konnichi wa" the kid spoke in Russian to Roho-and Roho answered in Japanese (No, no, no...) The speaker said: "I only understood Konnichi wa" :-)
ilovesumo Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 (edited) Kitazakura sang something somehow called"Sakura"- he said for his shikona. It was amazing that in most of the songs the word "namida"=tear took part. (Laughing...) For what these great female singers sang- volk songs but don't ask me about the title. The last female singer in Kimono was phantastic. For this girl group- I guess I am to old for that kind of music :-O Was it Baruto's shisho singing the duett? He was great too, but number one is Kitazakura- (Showing respect...) (No, no, no...) :-) Edited February 11, 2007 by ilovesumo
Petr Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 For this girl group- I guess I am to old for that kind of music There are many middle-aged men in this country (I know quite a few personally) who are not too old for Berriez(?). For them programs on national tv such as erokawa-chibiko-senshuken are made.

Don't worry, your English is not a problem, and your format was very clear. It just seems to me like Verena gave a conflicting report on that particular match. I assume your results come from an official source? Edited February 11, 2007 by kaiguma
Gacktoh Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 I assume your results come from an official source? not from an official source. one of my friends went there, and let me know by an e-mail.

James H Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 Hahah he is without a doubt the most intimidating person in sumo (Blinking...) . I can only imagine what he must have been like in his prime. I second that. Last year on the jungyo in Hokkaido, he came on the last day I was there (because it was the town next to his home town, I was told). He was sitting in a special tent with all the local bigwigs knocking back beers so I thought I would quickly ask him a few questions for my story... big mistake. Well, alright, not a big mistake (he didn't slap me around like that mama-san from a few years back), but I was on the receiving end of a yokozuna-sized stare, which as anyone who has got in the way of Asashoryu in the shitakubeya knows, :-) is very intimidating. I started out in my bestest polite Japanese saying who I was and what I was doing but it got all a bit garbled and I ended up looking at my shoes like someone caught with their hand in the cookie jar. (I know professional journos are supposed to be hard-nosed and the like, but most of them have never met Kitanoumi). He kind of grunted and told me to speak to the oyakata in charge of that day's event, at which point I said thank you and went to get a beer of my own.

Respect for trying... how could I ever even think about speaking to that guy...I mean, I get chickened meeting Mitoizumi (such a nice and friendly person I already spoke to in September but respect grows) at the street crossing...he came near and nearer, I was hoping he would turn to the side, taking the other crossing but he wasn't...so I was about to run away...somehow managed to stumble my way on...and that happened this Sunday... (Blinking...) John knows best about that respect-trap...I was like that meeting/seeing any Rikishi, even Jonokuchi- who ever, being part of Sumo... I am not a journalist and will never be one, just a student trying to get her Master's Thesis about Sumo done... Being nothing myself doesn't help to get confidence talking to Sumo people I can tell you... :-)
kaiguma Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 JESUS.........Ritanoumi Rijicho posing for fotos............I never thought he would do that. Wow. :-P Scoobie: RuhRoh Shaggy, rat's not Ritanoumi Rijicho! Velma: VWEEP [sound of mask being whisked away] That's right Scoobie! It's Dr. Feelgood in a Rijicho costume! Kaikitsune: Damn kids! You ruined my plan to bring back Kosho, and full implementation of rowing machines! All: (Sign of approval...) (Yusho winner...) (Blinking...) (Buyuzan...) (I dunno...) :-S :-O :-D
Jonosuke Posted February 13, 2007 Author Posted February 13, 2007 (edited) One person I definitely stay away from is Lovely Rita-noumi Rijicho. His stare and bark are bad enough, I shudder to think of his bite. As yokozuna he was always known for his gruff manner and he certainly made Asashroyu looking like an angel. Non sekitoris were known to have a bladder problem just having him shift his face around to them. He could have made them feel the wrath of yokozuna by looking at them. Edited February 13, 2007 by Jonosuke
Fay Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 Seems it is the better way not to be too respectful (Buyuzan...). On my very first trip to Japan, I was happy to recognize Kotonowaka and Takanohana and some other rikishi I knew from television. I had no idea of any oyakata besides Takanohana, I think. After visiting Sadogatake, Kokonoe and Takasago with a journalist, I went for the first time all alone to a heya to watch Asageiko. It happened to be Kitanoumi, cause I wanted to see Sugita. When I went in there were already some japanese reporters sitting there. But I thought, better you ask if it's ok to come in and watch Asageiko. There were two men standing, who looked official (I dunno...), so I tried my best japanese and asked one of them. He looked at me, quite surprised, but then he smiled and said I should sit down and watch. All the journalist had stopped writing and were watching us, perhaps waiting for a sack, a fight :-S or at least (Blinking...) . Well I sat down, the man disappeared and then one of the journalist appoached and whispered "Yokozuna Kitanoumi". AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAh, Yessssssssssss, think I turned more than red. When I read the posts here, he must have had a very very good day ... no it was morning, a very very good night??? (Yusho winner...) (Sign of approval...)
Bataa Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 Hahaha some funny posts. You guys are lucky to meet some well known rikishis n even chat with them. For me i was lucky enough to get invited to Asashoryou Foundation new year party in Dec where i shook hands and took pic with him but not much chatting.(He was abit drunk)
