I'm sick that I missed Chiyonofuji's career because from the clips I have seen he looked awesome. I'm sure there's an argument for Raiden too but as no-one can have seen him then he's only by reputation. So by that logic I'm afraid I have to go with Asashoryu. I think he'll be breaking most all-time records in the not-too-distant future.

I'm going with Taiho. (Shaking head...) As far as I'm concerned, I really don't need any explanation. (Clapping wildly...) His record speaks for its self! Plus I know him... (In jonokuchi...) (A HUGE PLUS!!! )

While I expect Asashoryu to re-write the record books, he is not quite there yet. Chiyonofuji was great, but the competition he faced was not as great as that of many of the other rikishi in this poll. Kitanoumi was great, facing powerful opponents every basho, and until recently holding the record for wins in a year, but I don't think he won quite enough to be the G.t.D. Raiden will always be a big question mark. Yes, he may have been more dominant in his time than any other rikishi, but we can only guess at what his sumo was like, and how powerful the opponents he faced were. The last two, Taiho, and Futabayama are much harder to choose between. I gave the edge to Futabayama. He won 12 in a time when there were only 2 basho a year. His streak of 69 has withstood the test of time.

Chiyo for #1, then Kitanoumi. Asashoryu might overtake them at this rate though.
