Didn't the proprietor of mongoleilink.de ask that people not access the files by direct link? Hmm.

I will accept remarks concerning posting of direct links only from the owner of these videos. And I think the webmaster of mongoleilink.de isn't owner of these footage. This clips are not made by him but riped from mongolian TV.

A. Asashosakari said this because the proprietor did directly request that we do not post direct links, and he signed up here for the sole purpose of making that request publicly on the forum, in July or September of 2006 if memory serves.

B. It doesn't matter who owns the footage; the proprietor owns or manages the bandwidth, and direct linking saps the bandwidth without the return of possible benefits that may be gained from advertising, hit-counters, and cultural or editorial information that mongoleilink.de might wish to convey to those who view the footage. This last point would circumvent any argument you have about his lack of rights to profit from the footage. That's probably the same defense he would use if Mongolian Television or NHK tried to sue him. Since he is not selling the video clips outright and has a considerable amount of other Mongolian-based information and video on the site, this would most likely hold up in court.

So it would be entirely his prerogative whether he wants people to link to these files directly. Since the web is an interactive, international community, it's best to heed the basic wishes of others when you are in their domain, because they have ultimate control of the domain, so he can remove all videos or limit them only to members, which would just make them more inaccessible, and this would be the opposite of what you are trying to do.

Quite recently because of people much more stubborn than you, refusing to remove clips from youtube even when directly requested by the proproetor of info-sumo.net, our free coverage of the past 2 or 3 basho was very spotty. Info-sumo has since graciously worked on a solutiion that benefits all parties and all international sumo fan communities. Let's follow their example...

It's ridiculous that we have to fight about idiocies like bandwidth and direct links. First of all, the owner of the site should pay more for bandwidth of he wants to post videos on his website. Anyway, I can't account for some people's lack of logic.

SO

This is my idea - someone will downloadad these movies and upload them to RAPIDSHARE or YOUSENDIT for a period of seven days - more than enough for everyone to download, and it doesn't have a bandwidth limit.

There, problem solved.

DON'T BLOW YOUR FUSE!

We all have one thing in common - we all agree that Maxim is God.

The problem isn't with lack of bandwith at that mongolian site. The problem is direct linking and/or putting it up outside the site. Maxim's suggestion is exactly like the incident which caused info-sumo videos to disappear for a basho or two. If the person who made these videos doesn't want them to be shared outside his own web-page, we should respect that. Uploading them elsewhere "steals" traffic from his own site, and I suppose he relies on traffic for advertising-based income. Web-space and bandwidth have to be paid, so help him to do so by downloading from his page.

OTOH, if his page is spyware or adware ridden (as some other topics seem to suggest), avoid it. There are sumo videos available elsewhere...

Edit: past discussion and webmaster's remarks can be found in this thread:

So these videos must be avaiable only in mongoleilink.de?! Not anywhere?! ;-)

I suggest banning.

I'd have to concur. Personally, I find continued hotlinking against the wishes of the domain owner to be way more obnoxious than simple content theft. (In fact, I didn't quite understand the stink that the Info-sumo webmaster raised about his files being posted to youtube, but then he's entitled to a different opinion than me on where his files should go.)

Ah, yes, "the other guy should just pay more if I feel he's not making his stuff available freely enough". Hard to understand how you got banned once before with that kind of community-minded attitude.

Not if you uploaded videos from info.sumo to Youtube, which you did...
