Asashosakari Posted September 23, 2007 Author Posted September 23, 2007 And to finish out the basho, already-MK Daishiryu and Morikawa (3-4!) won, while already-KK Tateishi and Wakahizen lost. Full round-up coming up in a few days, as mentioned.
Asashosakari Posted November 8, 2007 Author Posted November 8, 2007 (edited) I probably won't have time to post the final roundup the next couple of days, so I'll just wait until Wednesday when the intai list is out and we'll know for sure who's going to stick around. Well, let's pretend it's Wednesday after the basho... Since it's old news by now, I'll just mention again that a whopping five club members achieved their career-first kachi-koshi in Aki basho, all by a score of 4-3. Good luck to everyone in that quest for the elusive kachi-koshi! :-) Kotoyamaguchi and Daishiryu will be trying to prevent their 10th and 20th MK, respectively. Asashosakari Posted November 14, 2007 Author Posted November 14, 2007 (edited) Day 4: A mixed bag so far for our kachi-koshi chasing rikishi. The highest-ranked newcomer Toshi (he of the three consecutive 3-4's) has started out well with two wins and looks poised to take the first available exit from the list. Half a dozen 1-1 records also give some hope for a positive outcome, while another half-dozen already stand at 0-2 (among them three of the four club veterans, hrm) and have to rally if they want to achieve anything. Edit: Incidentally, our alumni from last time are 1-1 (Yamamoto, Akatsuki) and 0-2 (Wakahizen, Tateishi, Iwanaga) in Jonidan. Edited November 14, 2007 by Asashosakari
aderechelsea Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 Morikawa lost today and is 0-5 ... (Sign of approval...) will he continue the latest trend of winning his last bouts ?
Asashosakari Posted November 19, 2007 Author Posted November 19, 2007 Hmm, time to enter the time machine and pretend that we've just finished Day 8 so that I can still do the nakabi summary. (Nodding yes...) Not such a great tournament for three of our four club veterans...Morikawa and Kanai scored the big goose egg and are already make-koshi after just four bouts. I'll echo adere's concern whether Morikawa can still achieve his usual 2-5, especially now that he has already dropped another bout. If he fails it'll be his first 1-6 (or 0-7...) basho in Jonokuchi in two and a half years. Daishiryu at 1-3 also looks quite questionable and will probably have his 20-MK "anniversary" soon. (In fact, possibly within the next few hours...) In more positive news, Fay's positive vibes seem to be working for Kotoyamaguchi (Whistling...) and perhaps he can convert his 2-2 score into a kachi-koshi over the next few days. When I was collecting the all-Heisei dai-persisters a while ago, it seemed to me that lots of rikishi end their MK streaks after 9 MK, i.e. just shy of double-digits. Their number seemed to be about as high as the number of 7 MK and 8 MK rikishi combined, even though one would expect the number of streak-ending rikishi to be dropping with each additional step. Whether that's just a statistical artefact or perhaps rikishi are trying harder to prevent the 10th MK, I have no idea, but whatever it is, maybe Kotoyamaguchi will benefit from it, too. The newcomers have been all over the place so far, with somewhat expected results at the high and low ends. The top rikishi coming in (Toshi with 9-12) was 3-1 on nakabi and has a good shot to exit the list right away. Last basho's injury victim Tsuzuranuki looks like a good bet, too. On the other hand, the clearly lowest-scoring rikishi during the last three basho (Wakatoohashi at 3-18) proceeded to put up an 0-4 by nakabi and looks like a future club mainstay already. Other than that, we had three 1-3's and four 2-2's, the latter still with a good shot at kachi-koshi. All in all I would guess that 3 or 4 of the new rikishi will be leaving us right after this basho. Good for 'em. Lastly, we now know that none of the three banzuke-gai rikishi will be returning for Hatsu basho. Let's see what the intai list brings...perhaps Ishii will finally be leaving officially, now that Magaki-oyakata has returned from his illness absence. Asashosakari Posted November 22, 2007 Author Posted November 22, 2007 (edited) Day 12 update: The important thing first ;-) - Morikawa indeed failed to get a win in his 6th bout yesterday, so he's now guaranteed his first 1-6 or worse finish in Jonokuchi in quite a long time. Kanai at least got one win since nakabi, while Daishiryu dropped both bouts so these two veterans are joined in 1-5 records now. Kotoyamaguchi moved to 3-3 with a win yesterday and gets another shot at kachi-koshi after he blew his most recent chance on Day 13 of Aki basho. Among the new entrants nobody has reached kachi-koshi yet, either. Takama and Takeda fell from their 1-3 nakabi scores to the expected make-koshi (2-4 in both cases), while Hashimoto was the only one of the 2-2 rikishi to fare that badly over the last four days. The other three moved from 2-2 to 3-3, as did Toshi and Tsuzuranuki from 3-1 and Ebisumaru from 1-3 (good job!). Wakatoohashi did a little dressing-up to his record and is "only" 1-5 after his 0-4 start. I won't dare to predict the torikumi for the final days but it's likely that some of our seven rikishi still in the kachi-koshi chase will be facing each other, so we should be seeing some success stories here. ;-) Edited November 22, 2007 by Asashosakari

Asashosakari Posted November 24, 2007 Author Posted November 24, 2007 Kotoyamaguchi, we will see your face when you finally made it, I will cheer for you today (Sign of disapproval...) Seems to have worked. (Holiday feeling...) In his 10th basho Kotoyamaguchi finally achieved his kachi-koshi and avoids being immortalized in the pantheon of dai-persistence. Our best newcomer Toshi (the guy with the three consecutive 3-4 records) also earned his 4th win today over perennial bottomdweller Fukukasuga (7 KK in 48 completed basho!), while Ebisumaru fell to similarly-named Fukusegawa, also a permanent resident of Jonokuchi (with an even more astounding 2 KK in 28 completed basho)...of course, Morikawa now stands at no KK in 27 basho (26 completed), so it's all a matter of perspective. All club members have already completed their seven bouts as of today, so I may post the final summary a bit early this time.
Fay Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes ............. I was nearly too late this morning, but when I came in and had to pass the Jonidan rikishi in the Hanamichi, Kotoyamaguchi was standing in front and waiting for his bout. So I stopped and said to him "Kotoyamaguchi, gambatte kudasai" and he looked a bit frightened but then he smiled, bowed and murmured something. So i hurried to my seat to fix my camera. When he was announced I clapped for him and Kumegawa Oyakata (former Kotoimazuma) started laughing ... haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa >:-( . But Kotoyamaguchi won (Sign of approval...) (Clapping wildly...) (Clapping wildly...) and got his first KK ever !!!!!!!!!!!! YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH. And now Kumegawa Oyakata smiled. I think the boy just needs someone to care a bit for him :-D.
