Itachiyama Posted October 29, 2006 Author Posted October 29, 2006 (edited) Interesting shikona change of Daishodai ...! If the last kanji will be pronounced "yama", he will have the shikona of his Oyakata, the former Maegashira #2 Daishoyama. But maybe it's only Daishozan. Edited October 29, 2006 by Itachiyama
Asashosakari Posted October 29, 2006 Posted October 29, 2006 I'm a bit non-plussed that Katayama was promoted instead of Takanowaka...that's really taking "rank over record" a bit far.
Asashosakari Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 I just realized I have another big complaint about the new banzuke (which, overall, is actually pretty well done)...Otsukasa at M15e is a total joke, considering Kitazakura ended up at M11w. I can sort-of see why they stuck Asofuji into M13e instead of Otsukasa (rank over record again, though Ushiomaru vs. Kitazakura went the other way), but to have him not slotted in for another two full ranks after that...mind-boggling.
Peterao Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 Aminishiki first time sanyaku, sixth slowest in Sumo history 938 bashos). I had no idea Aminishiki has been doing sumo for so many centuries...
Gernobono Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 938 bashos? I had no idea Aminishiki has been doing sumo for so many centuries... nice comment.... are there 938 basho in "modern" time of sumo?.....i guess not.....50 years with 6 basho a year only give 300 basho.....maybe someone more familiar with statistics can give us a number of basho fought ......
Peterao Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 On a less sarcastic note, does 12 sanyaku at least tie a record for modern times?
Jakusotsu Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 My biggest "complaint" is about Homasho, Tosanoumi and Tochinohana keeping their same rank. Homasho could have well been shoved behind Kitazakura and Tosanoumi behind Tamakasuga or even Asofuji/Otsukasa. The M9 staying put is a bit more tricky and hard to be avoided without being too generous to Toyonoshima instead. I also like my Sanyaku better: Miyabiyama S1 Kotomitsuki Kisenosato S2 Kokkai K1 Roho K2 Aminishiki Same effect, but no stalling.
Oimeru Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 My personal banzuke guess was way off. Ouch. I'm a bit non-plussed that Katayama was promoted instead of Takanowaka...that's really taking "rank over record" a bit far. I share this sentiment. To add insult to injury, Takanowaka is only J2E... Asofuji finally made it, though. Well done!

I guess that was a conscious decision to treat all the lower-half 7-8's the same way, though I agree the M9's were the only ones where it was really necessary.
ilovesumo Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 (edited) I am about to cry to see Buyuzan at Ms2.......oh my god.... GANBATTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE (Clapping wildly...) I am so afraid of what could happen...MK would mean intai....I am very sure it would be... And Kaiho J9...MK could kick him to Makusita as well. Oh my...I'll only watch these 2 very favorite Rikishi...break my thumps by pressing them... 4 K....hm....that is something new for me. Wakanosato will hopefully manage it... Edited October 30, 2006 by ilovesumo
ilovesumo Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 Sounds very much like daiyoubu - "everything's ok" - cool Shikona (Clapping wildly...)
Asashosakari Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 (edited) List of shikona changes (plus Kotooshu and Goeido, of course): Daishodai -> Daishoyama Daiyuchi -> Daiyubu Niioka -> Tachikaze Takamaru -> Jukan Kurazono -> Satsumariki Kyokuhozan -> Kyokuhozan (kanji change only) Koyoshi -> Toyonokaze Asanozawa -> Asatemmu Okanohana -> Isanishiki time to change my signature then ..... any idea what it means? Here's the new kanji. (Edit: That's also the Musashigawa "signature" mu/bu kanji, of course.) Edited October 30, 2006 by Asashosakari
Jakusotsu Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 I guess that was a conscious decision to treat all the lower-half 7-8's the same wayThat is even more strange, because they usually never show such considerations. But perhaps non-demotion is indeed a different issue.Anyway, my eyebrows would have settled a bit lower with Toyonoshima at M9e and all 7-8 losing at least a half-rank.
Erkhembulgan Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 Kakuryu is placed higher than I expected.
Fay Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 Kakuryu is placed higher than I expected. And much higher I expected. Next basho will be quite hard for him, I think. Now I understand Izutsu Oyakata's words not to have too high expectations for the Kyushu basho. But I'm sure, he will do his best, ganbatte Kakuryu (Clapping wildly...)
Takamueda Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 (edited) I got 45 points at GTB, 44 of them from Yokozuna to M8. It's unbelievable to me that anyone could achieve 72 points with this tricky Banzuke, recognising that 84 is the absolute, theoretically possible maximum of points. So: Respect to Yosouou (Clapping wildly...) Edited October 30, 2006 by Takamueda

Kintamayama Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 And 3 sets of brothers, for the first time. It was probably mentioned already, but I don't.
