During the basho last nite, they showed some clips from past basho's. There was one where the winner hurt his elbow, came out to accept the trophies with his arm taped to his torso. I couldn't catch a name and was curious as to who he is. I'm trying to expand my knowledge. Thanks

Didn't see it, but it could have been Wajima who suffered a severe tear in the flesh between his fingers in a day 13 win over Takanohana I in the mid 70's. He went kyujo, but still managed to win the yusho. When he came back for the award ceremonies his entire hand and about 1/2 of his forearm had a very heavy white bandage on it.

The ailing yusho champ was Chiyonofuji. The clips were from 1989, the first year of the Heisei reign. Chiyonofuji had a number of separated shoulders, some said they were as a result of the tremendous torque he generated by his uwate-nage wins. It was probably because he actually was rather small-framed (well, relatively speaking) and his frame couldn't bear up under the pressure he put on it. One image I'll never forget is that of former ozeki Kiyokuni actually taking Chiyo's shoulder by his hands and jerking his shoulder back into place, while the TV cameras were rolling. I can't remember the specific basho, though - probably a different one than depicted yesterday.
