Ol' Bumbleboobs beat Goeido, which I will accept as there's no result which allows both participants involved to lose.
-
His main problem is he constantly has a head cold.

Shohozan is Japanese as are both his parents. Although once makuuchi resident Masunoyama is Filipino from his Mom's side and Japanese from his Dad.
My bad, I don't know why I thought Shohozan was part Pinoy. Must have been thinking of Takayasu twice.
-
Mitakeumi is part Filipino? Between him, Shohozan, and Takayasu, is this the largest presence of Pinoy blood in makuuchi in history?

Really missed opportunity that the subject line of this thread wasn't "Hakuho Henka Hooplah."

My new nickname for Aoiyama is "Ol' Bumbleboobs."

The unusual length of time it took Terunofuji to dispatch Ichinojo compared to previous bouts makes me wonder if it was due to Teru's knee holding him back or Ichinojo getting stronger. Most likely the former. I was nervous because Kintamayama's update leading into the basho said Teru wasn't winning matches in keiko when he had to hold his ground, but he definitely managed this time.
I'm happy to see Shohozan back in makuuchi and making Gagamaru belly-flop. Gagamaru losing and Shohozan winning are two of my favorite things to see, and when I can get them at the same time, even better.
Every time I see Aoiyama get totally clowned I always wonder how he's ranked so high. When against a lower ranked opponent he looks competent, but whenever he goes up against sanyaku he just looks like a clumsy fool. I don't know why I just have this utter dislike of Gagamaru and Aoiyama, I think it's because they're always slipping and falling all over themselves, to the point where it feels like their girth is of no use and hurting them more than helping. Why not be a relatively slimmer and sleeker gaijin like Tochinoshin or Amuuru when that works so well for them?

Is Hakuho married to a Japanese woman? I foresee a nice bit of sociology scholarship in the coming years centered around the generation of mixed ethnic Mongolian-Japanese children growing up in Japan thanks to sumo.
-
I have regular in-person interactions with two former wrestlers - one former makushita and one former makuuchi, if that means anything.

Pique? Ennui? Some other French word?
I hear there's some serious bechamel among the rijikai.

Just received tentative confirmation via the USSF Newsletter that the 2016 US Sumo National Championship will be in Scotch Plains, New Jersey (about an hour drive from New York City) on Saturday, April 16th.
I'll update once actual venue and date are confirmed but figured if there are any east coasters on this forum who want to attend, better to start planning earlier than later. My sister lives in New York so I'm planning on competing and staying at her place.

I'm surprised some of the people in this thread can see their keyboards to type with their noses turned so firmly in the air.

Well, I can only hope they didn't visit Yao-cho... ;-)

The frog rikishi just made me think ALL HAIL THE HYPNOTOAD.

I didn't realize wanpaku sumo had a tiny wanpaku gyoji! So adorable!
-
When you described Amuuru being "at his highest age" it just made me think "You are ALWAYS at your highest age" then I sort of tripped out for a bit.

I will be very very sad if this is how Teru's yusho run ends, but having a nice double-digit kachi-koshi in his second basho as ozeki is nothing to be ashamed of if he has to bow out.
If Teru is kyujo, I will now root for Kisenosato just because I like hoping against hope.

Ohhh, so it was one of your trademark wordplays and not a typo. My mistake!
-
Is it Shikimori or Kimura?
-
I just want him to get to sandanme already so he can have internet access and I can Facebook him again.
-
How the... Why? Why would you do that to yourself?

My experience of doing sumo with a wrapped toe, although it was on canvas and not a real clay dohyo, is that the wrapping actually detracts from your traction and makes it easier to slip, so the water probably cancels out a disadvantage rather than adding an advantage.

I was thinking Okinoumi's face made it look like an annoyed frat boy dragging his waster frat brother back to his dorm.

"Kata" is also a polite way of referring to a "person," above the less formal "hito" so I think that's what the "kata" part in here is doing.
But anyway, yes, an oyakata is someone who has purchased stock (kabu) in the NSK and is involved in the operations of the NSK in some form or another, either as a stable coach or master or part of a rijikai.
