How did 83yo British woman Doreen Simmons become a sumo commentator in Japan?
It is an unlikely mix — the ancient sport of sumo wrestling and a little old English lady from Nottingham.
Doreen Simmons studied theology and classics at Cambridge University, but became hooked by sumo more than 40 years ago after catching a glimpse of it on television.
The 83-year-old lives and works in Tokyo and writes about sumo for newspapers and magazines. She also provides English commentary on Japanese television.
Ms Simmons hesitates to call herself an expert in the sport, even though she has watched every development since 1974.
"I don't go in for all this claptrap about 'ancient' and this, that and the other," she said.
"You either like it or you don't," she said...

Sassy old British women are my favorite species.

Let me get this straight- does she look at someone's areola and tell them their fortune, or do her breasts actually do the fortune telling for her?
It's like that scene in Mallrats!

For the Nihongo-impaired, he was hospitalized on the 1st and diagnosed with cellulitis in his right thigh and a skin ulcer on the sole of his right foot, also reporting general issues with the joints in his right leg. Apparently this is related to something that happened before his fight with Bob Sapp at Rizin on New Year's eve but it doesn't give details.

Wow, is that really Akebono's calligraphy? That's some sexy brushwork there, Mr. Rowan.

Mr. Kneiting's latest appearance as a sumo wrestler is somewhat disappointing...
I need to watch something to make me feel less angry about this.
Let's see...
Ahh, thank you, Byamba.

Having only JUST figured out what "the wall" is about, I'm not 100% sure what qualifies a rikishi for being a persistance watchee. Is it how long someone goes without getting a kachi-koshi?

Okay, but how is making a baked potato going to prove a conspiracy?!

I'm saying i'm the fourth most expert on sumo in Formosa if we can just claim stuff.
Considering Formosa is now Taiwan, I'm sure there are a number of sumo enthusiasts there who may disagree ;-)
This reminds me of when I won a medal in the Rookie category at sumo nationals last year and celebrated myself being "the first Cuban-American lightweight rookie sumo champion"

Even better, his full record is 100-100-10.Sokokurai now has the funny makuuchi record of 100 wins and 100 losses.
Thousands of obsessive-compulsives immediately become humongous Sokokurai fans as he eases their anxiety.

Moto-Daishochi/Byamba is in that commercial, along with several other American amasumo mainstays like Kelly Gneiting and Americus Abesamis (who was credited as "naked Samoan" in the movie Let's Be Cops!).

Something odd to my eyes after the Harumafuji - Hakuho match was decided. After Hakuho was down Harumafuji stepped around to in front of him and reached toward Hakuho's chest area (can't tell where due to the camera angle) for a couple seconds before stepping away. Almost like he was making sure Hakuho was ok or helping him up or something. For that matter Hakuho went down so "softly" that it was almost as if, by holding on to the belt, Harumafuji was lowering him to the ground. Perhaps Hakuho is hurt. It just looked a little strange to me, and maybe someone else could give an opinion? The video timestamp is 1:23 - 1:28.
With that throw, Hakuho had actually used up the remaining life force in his vampiric body that he replenishes by draining it from young Japanese hopefuls. Because the official NSK yaocho-hyogi-in-kai told him to throw matches, he didn't replenish his supply enough, and in the moment after the throw, Harumafuji was transferring some of the excess life force he earned from last basho's yusho directly into Hak's heart.
I mean, even a child could see that's what happened.

I don't know if this deserves discussion in this thread or simply in a separate thread praising Harumafuji, but I feel that, while maybe not one of the BEST Yokozuna of all time numbers-wise and of course not as mind-blowingly dominant as Hakuho, he has one of the most dynamic and technically interesting styles of any Yokozuna. The match that illustrates this first in my mind was his match against Hakuho last year that helped get Terunofuji his yusho. The way he changed levels, pushed off the tawara, and shot in on Hakuho's belt was like something out of olympic freestyle wrestling. Then again, being a Yokozuna in the age of Youtube, there's just more video evidence, and I cannot say I'm basing this on extensive and unbiased research.

On a different subject, Shodai has definitely gained himself a new fan in me. For a shin-nyuumaku, he's showing veteran level solid technique and skill. It's not some kind of flashy monster debut like Ichinojo where he was bowling people out, its calm, disciplined sumo that shows the potential to last longer and even develop into something better. I'm getting a vibe of him, at worst, becoming another Aminishiki, just a very capable technician who can hang around forever.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, it is an amazing compliment to Hakuho and what he HAS accomplished that any time he loses ever, it arouses suspicions of yaocho. How would you like to be so good at your job that any time you make a mistake people think it's because someone secretly paid you to make that mistake? How good of a life would that be?

Kisenosato - Hakuho
The Japanese title/ description spoils the result. If you don't know the result yet, try to overlook it.
Hmm. Yaocho? I don't think so. Mukiryoku? Definitely. Hakuho went for a harizashi and just didn't pull it back in time? I don't buy Hak throwing a match and Toyonoshima NOT throwing it, though. Again, if I had the book, that's not how I'd work it. Unless they want Giku to job to Goeido tomorrow to again force a playoff. Sumo IS weird, isn't it?
-
In the USA, there were a couple of sumo wrestlers trying to distract chefs on the TV series, HELL'S KITCHEN. I think it was byamba and someone else... sorry no video clip to post.
Was it Yamamotoyama? Give me a description, chances are I probably know who it is.
-
I am very very angry at Giku right now. I KNOW Toyonoshima is a very good solid wrestler with a winning history against Kotoshogiku, but honestly this makes it Hakuho's basho to lose again. I don't find it hard to believe Hakuho could stay winning until senshuraku and force a playoff, and if Hakuho faces Giku in a playoff, it's a Hakuho out for blood. Hakuho will lose when he slips up and isn't ready, but this time by god will he be ready.

Giku just is finally having the right combination of headspace and physical health. It's a wonderful thing that happens in sports. If this were a work and I had the book, I would have saved the Hakuho/Giku match for senshuraku. Then I would have had the show on tape delay so that way a competing program could leak the news that Kotoshogiku wins and derisively comment that "that'll put butts in seats" so that way EVERYONE TURNS THE CHANNEL to see it happen.
