Sofia Awards Bulgarian Top Sumo Wrestler Bulgaria's Sports Ministry awarded Monday the best Bulgarian sumo wrestler Kaloyan Mahlianov (Kotooshu) for high sports achievements. Photo by Kameliya Atanasova (Sofia News Agency) Sports: 29 March 2005, Tuesday. Bulgaria's Sports Minister Vassil Ivanov awarded Tuesday the best Bulgarian sumo wrestler Kaloyan Mahlyanov (Kotooshu) for high sports achievements. The ceremony took place in the Rodina hall of the National Stadium "Vassil Levski" in Sofia. The 22-year old wrestler competed last week in the Second Spring Osaka Grand Sumo Tournament fro winning the prestigious Emperor's Cup. Mahlyanov is considered as the first European to enter the Japanese Sumo elite - the sanyaki ranks. His rise to sanyaku is one of the quickest since sumo switched to a six-tournament system in 1958, according to Japanese media. Mahlyanov is often regarded as "Bulgaria's most famous export after yoghurt."

Noticed at the end of today's bout 'shoryu grabbing his elbow... everything OK there?

LOL! I wonder what it is about the "sumo" name/concept that attracts repeated acronym usage? Sometimes I'm sure it is accidental, but other times it seems the originators "stretch" to make it fit.

Spacecraft for the Unmanned Modification of Orbits (SUMO) DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) is the gift that keeps on giving. I noticed this new start in the DARPA budget: Program (US$ Millions) 2006 (12.6) 2007 (22.3) Spacecraft for the Unmanned Modification of Orbits (SUMO)

Asasekiryu: The timing of my leg grab (muso) and the twist (uwate hineri) was just right. I was satisfied with my sumo today.

"uchimuso (inner thigh propping twist down) - This technique can be done from either an inside or outside grip. The attacker will sweep one of the defender's legs up by hitting the inner thigh with the back of his free hand. As that hand makes contact with the opponent's thigh, he will pull with his other hand in the same direction as the sweeping hand." wow... would like to have seen that kimarite in action....

Livington, Texas: a little hamlet (5,000 people) on the Trinity River in Texas is my hometown. We also have a big lake with good fishing near by. My ancestors are farmers and clergymen. I am a 5th generation Texan and proud to be so. There is something different about being a native Texan. You grow up holding loyalty to the state first and then the US. (Texas is the only mainland state that used to be its own country--1836-1845) The Texas mystique IS all its cracked up to be! YEEE-HA!!! :-)

Yea, I'm waiting for the day when (as a self-avowed, practicing idealist) the rich will have the chutzpah/sisu( (In a state of confusion...) ) not to revel in, or inordinately desire, or look for security in their riches, but rather to think about the Other first.
