Few months ago there was some talk in amateur sumo discussions that how many forum members have actual expefience in doing sumo. Well naturally not that many although quite a few of the active members do have experience in amateur sumo. Shiroikuma is the obvious one as he is well-known in amateur sumo circles but then also Petr, Sasanishiki, Nishinoshima, Adachinoryu, Sekihiryu...

In any case I am sure there are many active forum members who do a lot of sports in general. I haven't had the chance to wear mawashi but judo yes and many other sports as that is sort of a way of life and I enjoy physical exertion and giving the body challenges and test how one's body reacts and works and learns skills. Then I know there are some who don't like physical exertion at all but it would be interesting to make a poll so I did.

The poll options are somewhat hastily planned but should cover most crude profiles quite well.

Physical exercise is bad for your health in the long run. You get all kinds of bad things, especially if you do it in the sun. Couch sitting is good. Computer sitting is good. Brain exercise is good. Physical exercise can be hazardous to your health. A lot of head butting can and will result in Ford Syndrome. Eating while running is hard. Running while eating is a bit harder. Laughing while doing karate can be dangerous to your tongue. Smoking while lifting weights can cause blindness. Blue is the color of no oxygen.

Eating with your mouth full is necessary.

have practiced a few sports in my life up to date (boxing,capoeira,wrestling,football,5000 meters running) but never Sumo. I try from time to time some shiko or matawari , but i don't know why ....

still trying to find a keiko partner and then i will order two mawashi and start practicing in the parks.

in the meantime i will probably start practicing a bit of jiu jitsu that i like a lot and never had a chance to try before....

I'm not really a sports fan and although my job(Window cleaner) keeps me fairly fit I dont get involved in sports on a regular basis apart from the occassional half marathon.(Very occassional)

Trying to prevent an angry 180 Kg giant from going from one side of a dirty ring to the other makes no sense to me; but it is fun to watch. Sweaty armpits are disgusting! (Whistling...)

many forum members have actual expefience in doing sumo....Sekihiryu...

could be wrong here but i think i remember him saying in osaka that he has never tried. as for adachinoryu, he only did it till i beat him up then he took his ball (mawashi) and went home. haven't seen him on a dohyo since

which had nothing at all to do with having a child - a son born this year and preferring time at home with him. BTW - who won our first ever - noone ever remembers the 3rd or 4th fight? (Whistling...) (Hugging...) :-S (Whistling...)

I was zapping around in a night, 1998 (I was 13 years old), not able to sleep... SUMO on Eurosport. Interesting, exotic and hell, I wanted to understand what the guy was talking about, so I watched it until the end. I saw Akebono AND Konishiki .....WOOOOOW ( think it was his last Basho). I was on fire from the first moment, because Sumo was (and still is) something very special not many people like- stuff to separate me from the main stream -german kids. I like to be the "alien".

In 2003, I tried to do amaSumo, but the trainer knew less then I did (he was a Judo-ka),

an old knee injury completed the fail of my amaSumo career, so, I have to love what's on TV (Whistling...) .

(((John, I hope you'll teach me in 2007! Still young enough to try it, and I am not afraid.( was a good boxer)))

Today, I am interested in the magical parts of Sumo, the "This Rikishi seems to be a god"-factor. I want to translate my feelings for the magic of Sumo, want to tell it to people who think that Sumo is only a sport.

We know it's much more. (Whistling...)

I put "Active in various physical hobbies". I have always played one or two sports, right from primary school. I played cricket as an organised sport for about 14-15 years until my early 20s. I also coached for four seasons. I have played Australian Rules football for the last 12 seasons. I play golf far too little for my own liking, and I'm not that great at the best of times. I've had about 3 seasons of social soccer while at school. I've also dabbled in badminton and squash for a season each when at high school.

I have never done any martial arts, despite having contact with Japan and Japanese for the past 18 years. My introduction to sumo was during the time that I have spent living in Japan (at various times) and has really blossomed since 1998. I came to an interest in amateur sumo through an interest in ozumo and looking for an original research topic for my PhD. I now find that I am more interested in amateur sumo than ozumo, perhaps partly because of knowing some of the athletes that I've met from my time researching, but also because of the scarcity of information. Any new nuggets of information are like gold, whereas there is a fair amount of information on current happenings in ozumo through fora like this and the SML or in Japanese on the internet.

I don't think it is fair (to them) to put me in the same sentence as ShiroiKuma, Petr, Nishi, or even ANR. I have participated in only a small amount of amateur sumo (one social competition and about a dozen keiko sessions of various types), and all as part of my research interests in amateur sumo. Mostly the "you're here so why not do some" method of being persuaded to participate. However, I have decided that I will compete in the next regional tournament (March, I think) as long as a dodgy ankle injury gets no worse in the next month of football. I made a similar decision for this year's tournament, but I had not trained specifically, had no mawashi, had not told the organisers of my intentions (a small hurdle that could have been overcome but there were no spare mawashi), and got roped into being the yobidashi.

asashoryu just had a son but i dont see him using it as an excuse to whimp out.

perhaps as the yokozuna's son was, happily I must add, born completely healthy whereas my son needed 2 operations before fully 3 months of age - you knew this so surprised at the above.

First bit of response (not quoted) worrying too - means Chelsea ARE better than MUFC in thine eyes!

you are only as good as your last one goes the famous phrase so i guess we can add me sending you into retirement mentally (chess) as well as physically (sumo) can we?

Does swimming three times a week count as physical hobby? That, and walks, and hikes once in a blue moon. I'm a born couch potato fighting against destiny. ;-)

I like watching all sorts of sports: rugby, weight-lifting, nordic skiing, occasionaly voleyball (live if possible), rowing, equestrian sports (mmmm horses), snooker even. I dislike football, probably because it's everywhere and wastes air-time better used for other sports. (Sigh...)

I'm lazy, except for my bicycle, which is my main means of transportation.

On the other hand, I'm interested in almost any existing sport on this planet -- maybe even in a few non-existing ones. (Sigh...)

Not active in any form of sport at the moment (used to be pretty fanatic at the gym, but that was 15 - 20 years ago), but member of a family of martial-arts-fans.

My hubby used to do aikido and iaido, he quit some years ago because of lack of time then, but he started doing fitness recently. My youngest son does capoeira and started doing jiu-jitsu recently, and now the older one says he wants to try kung-fu. And mama just watches sumo (Nodding yes...)
