Sumo master ready for a fall after rampage

JULIAN RYALL IN TOKYO

IT IS a sport rooted in ancient traditions and famed for the dignity and virtue of its giant competitors.

But Japan

Posted

Or is it that Japanese customs are ill-equipped to welcome those raised in other cultures? ;-)

Anyways, the author and Mr. Varcoe can relax. Asashoryu is not going anywhere, he's too important to the NSK and everyone, including his Oyakata, knows this.

The BARBARIAN! How dare he be such a BARBARIAN!?!

Even his real name is BARBARIAN! There is something very suspicious in a man whose name is Dolgorsuren Dagvadorj! Evil name. BARBARIAN and EVIL. It is of utmost importance that he will be erased from ozumo. As a matter of fact it should be considered that all Mongolians will be sacked immediately because they may all be evil! They even eat horses for goodness sake which is a mortal sin and sign of extremely barbaric behaviour. All decent people only kill pigs, cows and chicken in order to eat them! And there is evidence that Mongolians have some barbaric wrestling sport of their own where there is NO DOHYO at all! How can there be a wrestling sport like that so close to the home of sumo?? Aren't they ashamed that they have developed such a wrong wrestling dicipline? They should stop doing such acts and set up sumo dohyos. I am deeply shocked. This article was the last nail in the coffin. I can't accept Asashoryu! He must retire in shame! Immediately.

Fred Varcoe was a writer here (Japan Times IIRC) till a couple of years back

Not seen recently - till today.

Interesting opinions - seem spiced up a bit though by the writer.

Asashoryu will become FREE AGENT after "at least" leaving his stable. hahahaha

What kind of man wants to take someone's wedding gift? I can understand sharing earnings from basho, TV commercial, TV broadcast, prizes and what not. But I can't see how could someone share his wedding gift. It's like sharing your birthday gift isn't it?

Indeed I wasn't serious at all TSolMon. Quite the contrary. Without Mongolians sumo would miss an important addition just like without Mongolian sumoforum members, this forum would miss an important addition. ;-)

I have to wonder if the most anti-Shoryu reporters or Japanese sumofans would really like to see Shoryu out of sumo. They may be bitter about Shoryu's success, annoyed by his antics and just enthusiastic (in yellow press) for the chance to whip his Mongolian skin with their nasty, snappy and semantic virtual whips but what would be the void like if Shoryu suddenly bowed out in deep remorse bowing in emotional public media conference uttering through tears "I did my best in ozumo, I tried to be strong yokozuna. My origin and character just made it too hard for me to accord with the customs fully. I acknowladge my mistakes and will give up my honourable rank". One more article and then a deep confused silence and the end of "love to hate" relationship? I bet even most of the anti-Shoryu Japanese sumofans/reporters would not like to see him leave sumo. They might want to scold him and hope him to lose badly and see him in negative spotlight but to see him get out of sumo? Hmmm...Japanese mentality/psychology can be different yes but this different?

My wish for the new month (hachi-gatsu comes!) is that the success of foreign rikishi and above all, the work ethics of foreign rikishi, will have even bigger impact on Japanese rikishi who take up the challenge and work hard with the foreigners and themselves! My ultimate wish for ozumo!! I dedicate August to Kotoshogiku-Kotooshu kind of rivalries. If Korooshu isn't a locomotive to Shogun, then I don't know what locomotive is.

This is very peculiar thought to me too. I understand the tradition that part of rikishi's pay and income in sumo goes to the stable but it feels awkward to have non-sumo related income treated the same way. Maybe Asashio needs a new set of spoons or livestock? For wedding present if I would be Asashoryu's friend/supporter in Mongolia and I would be rich, I would give Shoryu a very strong horse who would live in some well-reputed Tokyo horse ranch where Shoryu could go to ride and admire his own kairiki horse. He must have own horses already?

Is it a fact that Asashoryu will hold a wedding party (20 months after the fact or so) first in Mongolia and then a wedding ball in Japan in August or is this simply fabrication?

Yes, it's a fact, a fact that has been published about a month ago ( maybe more) by all major papers, and translated by me.

Still, it certainly could be that Asa had no idea about how involved the kyokai/heya is in these matters.

As a fact, it's a fact.

Sorry, I missed a few threads here at that point in time... ;-)

Tsolmon,

It was clear for everybody (except you) that Kaikitsune's post was sarcastic and funny, even. I wonder, how you can miss that.

Wishing somebody a painful death for just being little sarcastic is ....well, true barbaric, really.

Kaikitsune, you don't need to explain yourself....not for that guy.

Coo-cook - back off the guy, okay? he admitted he was wrong and spoke rashly, and apologized. what more do you want? it's not like he has a pattern for this sort of thing....

I agree with on both, Kaikitsune.
