Kintamayama Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 (edited) Injured Ozeki Terunofuji has declared he will be participating in Haru. His right shoulder and the left knee he had surgery on are recovering remarkably well. "For sure. I'm getting better. I was even told by my doctor that I am recovering too quickly..," he said. He is doing some power training at the moment to get back into shape. The plan is to start doing shiko next week and with the Banzuke announcement on February 29th to start full training. "I've got to change the way I've been doing things until now. The most important thing is to avoid injuries.." he added,. Edited February 2, 2016 by Kintamayama 4
Akinomaki Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 (edited) Kotoshogiku will use all kinds of training for the preparations to his Yokozuna-run. On Jan. 7th he did bike training with keirin professionals: his trainer announced that he'll intensify this next month, to strengthen his lower body and cardiopulmonary functions. He did one 500m course on the mamachari-bike and will use a better bike next, road or mountain bike, to make more rounds.http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2016/02/02/kiji/K20160202011966100.html And now we have it like this, with 6 rounds at the Chiba Keirin race course http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1600694.html and he has the right training partner now: Yoshikaze and again support from his wife - look like he won that race (with Yoshikaze) Edited February 5, 2016 by Akinomaki 7

Kuroyama Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Maybe they should have considered letting the ol' mage down so the helmets could fit properly. And riding a bike barefoot? Ugh.
Ryoshishokunin Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Maybe they should have considered letting the ol' mage down so the helmets could fit properly. And riding a bike barefoot? Ugh. Obviously bike helmets don't fit quite the same as samurai ones. . .
hamcornheinz Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 riding barefoot means lost toes waiting to happen... or something along that line. real dangerous. 1
Akinomaki Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 (edited) More of the start of training yesterday by Kotoshogikuat the heya of course as well He did one 500m course on the mamachari-bike and will use a better bike next, road or mountain bike, to make more rounds. And now we have it like this, with 6 rounds at the Chiba Keirin race courseand he has the right training partner now: Yoshikaze for this he used at last some kind of shoeswith the keirin pro's (and tsukebito?) - a glimpse of Yoshikaze on the leftTakako Ishii (there are 2 in keirin, but she's the one in Chiba) was also making rounds with themhttp://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2016/02/05/kiji/K20160205011984320.htmlhis wife got flowers as well2 other pics with Yoshikaze in this slide show - at the end of the video is a pic of the snow statue of Kitanoumi at the Sapporo snow festival one appeared now Edited February 6, 2016 by Akinomaki 6
Akinomaki Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 looks like Kotoshogiku's physical trainer published this Kotoshogiku on the 20th also gave advice to visiting high school students, from nearby Kashiwa, the Nittai high, among them as 1st year Asashoryu's nephew - Asashoryu is his sempai from Meitoku-gijuku high.http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1607218.html 5
Akinomaki Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 Terunofuji really is out of luck. Now influenza and asthma. He had planned to start keiko with the young ones on the 25th, but the day before was down with 40°C fever and the day just came back from the hospital. Full recovery is expected for the 28th, the date to leave for Osaka: "I lost maybe 5kg and also my legs have become thinner. Like this I can't do sumo." http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1609152.html 2
Akinomaki Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Kotoshogiku yesterday started keiko in Osaka, the basics and his special training, designed by his personal trainer. Able to lift from squat 240kg now, he also is more conscious of taking care of his body and wants to use all free time for that: the day before he got treatment at midnight for about 1.5 hours. That day he only checked his movements with the young ones, keiko bouts with sekitori are planned for next week and later.http://www.daily.co.jp/sumo/2016/03/02/0008852996.shtmlhttp://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20160301/sum16030117560006-n1.htmlTerunofuji at the heya also started keiko that day, after surgery the first training with sekitori.http://www.daily.co.jp/sumo/2016/03/02/0008852994.shtml 3
Kintamayama Posted March 2, 2016 Author Posted March 2, 2016 (edited) Hakuhou has started training at the heya's new lodgings in Osaka today. After not getting the yusho for the last three basho, he seems raring to go. He had 30 bouts against Juryo Ishiura and others and was very active. "I've been facing day 1 a bit unprepared lately so this time around I am taking my time.." he said. Aside from the usual shiko and teppo he was keenly overlooking the young guys' training and handing out technical tips. After sweating well, he worked on his tachiai, pushing with his left and scooping with his legs and looking quite satisfied with himself at the end. He is tied with Kitanoumi in all-time first place with most wins as a Yokozuna (670) and has 6 wins to go to tie Taihou for third place for overall wins (964) so a few more records will be achieved this basho. He has never gone 4 consecutive basho without a yusho since becoming Yokozuna. "I did win Osaka last basho and it's a once a year basho here, so.." hinted Hakuhou. He has stalled these last two basho at the late stages. "The day when I will laugh will be here someday.." he said. He will start degeiko next week. Edited March 2, 2016 by Kintamayama 4
Kintamayama Posted March 2, 2016 Author Posted March 2, 2016 (edited) Kotoshougiku continued training at home today. He faced the Makushita guys , pushing and being pushed for 20 bouts. "I just wanted to feel the sand on the soles of my feet.." he said. Yesterday, as Akinomaki pointed out, he was worked over (together with Yoshikaze) by his trainer till midnight, taking a heavy tire for a walk for a distance of 85 meters again and again. Despite the muscular pains he has in his right elbow, he is not letting up. "I am pushing myself to the limit in order to reach my peak at the right time. The fact that I'm able to do what I should be doing causes me great joy," he summed. Edited March 2, 2016 by Kintamayama 3
hamcornheinz Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Just a small note Kinta, "overlooking" almost seems like hes not training them, instead of training them more than he usually does, which is what I think you meant.
Kintamayama Posted March 2, 2016 Author Posted March 2, 2016 (edited) Just a small note Kinta, "overlooking" almost seems like hes not training them, instead of training them more than he usually does, which is what I think you meant. Yes, I meant it in its other meaning of a "view from above" and not "failing to notice.." Should have been "supervising" or "giving guidance" or one of the many better alternatives out there.. Edit - Damn- i meant overseeing. Damn.. Edited March 2, 2016 by Kintamayama 4

Kintamayama Posted March 5, 2016 Author Posted March 5, 2016 (edited) Ozeki "it should have been me" Kisenosato intends to go for degeiko to Sadogatake on Monday to face the guy that was. "He's not going there specifically to seek out Kotoshougiku, but it's natural that as an Ozeki he feels frustrated.." said Naruto Oyakata. Yesterday he faced Takayasu 30 times, winning 23. "I think I'm in good shape. At this point it's important for me to do what I'm doing properly.." Edited March 5, 2016 by Kintamayama 3
Kintamayama Posted March 6, 2016 Author Posted March 6, 2016 Terunofuji trained at his home beya today. He didn't face any sekitori and his session lasted 20 minutes, lending his chest to the young ones. His injured collarbone seems to still be bothering him. "It's bothering me," he said. A week left till the basho starts. "It's just the right time.." he said, showing patience. 2
Kintamayama Posted March 6, 2016 Author Posted March 6, 2016 Kotoshougiku did some shiko and teppo at training today. A week before the basho, he has yet to train with any sekitori. "No reason to rush things.." he said. Yesterday he had a parade, today he had some event and in general is very busy. "These events fill me with energy and will help me fuel a change of pace.." he said. Kisenosato intends to come for training tomorrow, so that will be Kotoshougiku's first real training session. "There's a week till the start of the basho. I will be doing what I have to do.." he added. 3

Lending one's chest with a recently fractured collarbone doesn't look like the safest type of training... unless you want to be in a lot of pain...
Kintamayama Posted March 6, 2016 Author Posted March 6, 2016 Kadoban Ozeki Goueidou, two days ago- wakes up and goes to Kasugano beya for a joint heya session with his Sakaigawa beya. Hundreds of sekitori there. He takes part in 24 bouts, going 18-6 which is tolerable. Last basho he went 4-11 and is said to have suffered from a right wrist injury. "I'm fine now," he said. He was seen using that right hand in full, doing some pulling and stuff. He was 7-4 against Tochiouzan and 9-2 against Tochinoshin. He has been doing a lot of keiko lately. "This is about the time when fatigue sets in. So far, it's not bad," he said. I asked him if he meant that the fatigue was not bad or if he meant that his condition was not bad, but he could not hear me from this distance. He is a local boy this basho, and to sum things up, came up with this brilliant observation: "I will be doing my own sumo!" Now I need to sit down. 7
Pandaazuma Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 Hundreds of sekitori? ;) Does the combination of Sakaigawa and Kasugano enable some kind of temporal distortion then?
Kintamayama Posted March 7, 2016 Author Posted March 7, 2016 Hundreds of sekitori? ;) Does the combination of Sakaigawa and Kasugano enable some kind of temporal distortion then? I would probably respond in the affirmative if I knew what tempura distortion was. Is it something like yakitori? 7

Kintamayama Posted March 7, 2016 Author Posted March 7, 2016 Hakuhou hosted Tomozuna beya and its sekitori today- Kaisei and Juryo luminaries Asahishou and Kyokutaisei. 16 bouts, showing speedy uwate snatching and lightning yorikiriing. "Although I do use my power to do pushing sumo during keiko, I was able to check my opponents' weight while perspiring well," he said. As he was making some tegatas later, he added: "I'm in the same place (condition- wise) as I usually am.." 1
Kintamayama Posted March 7, 2016 Author Posted March 7, 2016 (edited) And then, Kisenosato arrived at Sadogatake beya for degeiko. And boy, did the sparks fly. Serious tension and some hard fought bouts were witnessed by spectators who flocked to the scene. 10 bouts, 8-2 in favor of Kisenosato. "I feel my tachiai is not bad.." said Kotoshougiku who showed some sharp footwork at the initial charge. It was his first match against sekitori after arriving in Osaka. "I still am not feeling right at the edge of the dohyo as I get pushed back.. I'd like to up my pace," he added. Kisenosato, who was praised to be "very strong" by Kotoshougiku, had 9 bouts against Yoshikaze as well. He lost the first bout but won the other eight. "I'm just getting started..I feel I can do way better.." he said. Edited March 7, 2016 by Kintamayama 3
